Chapter 20 - Reclaiming the Light

By the following summer, the world had changed.

The Connecticut house was no longer a quiet, tense sanctuary of survival; it had become a vibrant, chaotic home filled with life, laughter, and hope.

On a warm, beautiful evening in July, the backyard was lit up with fairy lights. A long wooden table was covered in plates of food, and the air was filled with the smell of grilled peaches and lavender.

The children were all there. Caleb, now twelve, was tall and confident, showing Chloe how to cast a fishing line into the small pond at the edge of the property. Chloe, walking with barely a trace of her former limp, laughed as she caught a small, shimmering fish, releasing it back into the water with a wide, bright smile.

Olivia, Ethan, and Noah were playing tag in the grass, their laughter echoing through the trees.

Kesha stood on the back porch, a glass of white wine in her hand, watching them. For the first time in ten years, her mind was completely still. The hyper-vigilance was gone, replaced by a deep, profound peace.

A pair of warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and David rested his chin on her shoulder.

"They look happy," David whispered, his voice warm against her ear.

"They are happy, David," Kesha said, turning in his arms to face him. She looked into his eyes, seeing the man who had fought beside her through the darkest nights of her life. "And so am I."

David smiled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a simple, elegant platinum band set with a single, brilliant emerald.

"I know we've lived through a lifetime of drama, Kesha," David said softly, his eyes filled with a deep, unwavering love. "But I want to build a future with you. A quiet, beautiful, boring future. Will you marry me?"

Kesha felt tears of joy rise in her eyes. She didn't hesitate.

"Yes, David," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "A thousand times, yes."
