Chapter 10 - Skeletons in the Safe

The security guards stepped forward, their hands resting heavy on their waistbands. We were cornered against the rusted train tracks, the freezing air biting at our faces.
"Arthur," Victoria said, looking at her ex-husband with pure disgust. "You really are her lapdog, aren't you? You ruined your own family for her money."
"I protected our interests, Victoria," Arthur Sterling said defensively, though his eyes darted nervously around the cavernous station. "You don't understand the scale of what we're protecting here."
"I understand perfectly," I said, stepping forward, holding the envelope tight against my chest. "You’re protecting forty-seven million dollars in tax evasion. You’re protecting a corrupt judge. And you're protecting a mother who kept her own granddaughter locked in a Swiss facility for a corporate write-off."
Marcus looked at me, a flash of genuine agony crossing his face. "Kesha... please. We can settle this. I’ll give you whatever you want. The fifty thousand today was just the start. I’ll write a check for five million right now. Just give us the papers. Don't destroy my family."
"Your family destroyed itself, Marcus," I said, my voice steady and cold. "You stood by and watched your mother hide money while your children wore worn-out coats in the winter. You watched Ashley cry for her daughter while you proposed to her with a diamond ring bought with blood money. You aren't a father. You're an asset on a ledger."
"Enough!" Patricia snapped, her patience entirely spent. She turned to her security guards. "Take the envelope. Delete the digital files on their phones. If they resist, call the police and report a physical assault on my person. Let’s see who the judge believes then."
The guards lunged forward.
But before they could reach us, the high arched glass windows of the train station were illuminated by a sudden, blinding flash of red and blue lights.
The heavy iron doors of the terminal were thrown open with a violent crash.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.
A dozen armed federal agents flooded the terminal, tactical lights cutting through the darkness, their weapons raised. Standing behind them was Officer Miller, alongside a sharp-looking woman in a dark federal suit.
Patricia Reynolds froze, her hands slowly rising as three agents surrounded her. Arthur Sterling dropped his briefcase, his face turning an ashen gray. Marcus fell to his knees on the frozen concrete, weeping silently into his hands.
The federal agent in charge walked up to David, Ashley, and me. "Mrs. Bennett? Ms. Monroe? I’m Special Agent Vance."
I blinked in surprise. "Vance?"
The agent gave a grim, small smile. "Harrison Vance is my uncle. And for five years, the Department of Justice has been investigating his financial anomalies. When Mr. Cross flagged the 'M.B. Memorial Fund' transfer to the special master two hours ago, it triggered an automatic federal alert. We’ve been tracking the Reynolds Trust for a long time, but we lacked the internal encryption keys to prove the offshore tax fraud. Your whistleblower gave us exactly what we needed."
Agent Vance turned to Patricia, who was currently being cuffed by an agent.
"Patricia Reynolds, you are under arrest for federal tax evasion, corporate wire fraud, and judicial bribery," Agent Vance announced.
May you like
Patricia didn't look at the agents. She looked at me, her eyes filled with a venomous, dying fury. "You ruined us," she whispered. "You are nothing but a common girl from the sticks."
"No, Patricia," I said, walking up to her, looking down at the woman who had controlled my life from the shadows for nine years. "I'm a mother. And you should have known better than to touch my children."
