Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Dynasty

The penthouse suite of the Reynolds Corporate Headquarters looked out over a city blanketed in white, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly hot.
Patricia Reynolds stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her reflection ghostly against the falling snow outside. Marcus sat on the leather sofa, a glass of scotch in his hand, his face pale and eyes bloodshot. Standing near the door was Arthur Sterling, their lead defense counsel, looking uncharacteristically flustered.
"Explain to me," Patricia said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register, "how a low-rent legal clinic attorney managed to sustain a full freeze on my family’s core assets. On Christmas Eve, no less."
"Patricia, David Cross is not a low-rent clinic attorney," Sterling said defensively, loosening his tie. "He’s a former senior partner at Vance & Blackstone who left corporate law five years ago to do pro-bono advocacy. He knows every loophole in the trust structure. And frankly, the evidence of surveillance on the Bennett children looked terrible to Judge Vance. It suggested criminal concealment of assets."
"I don't care how it looked!" Patricia slammed her hand onto the mahogany desk. "That trust funds three major development projects that require capital calls by the end of the week. If we miss those deadlines, the board will call for a vote of no confidence in Marcus’s leadership."
Marcus groaned, burying his head in his hands. "Mother, it’s over. Ashley left. She dropped the ring right there on the table. Kesha has the judge on her side. The kids... Caleb looked at me like I was a monster."
"Shut up, Marcus!" Patricia snapped, turning on him with a look of pure disgust. "You are a monster because you were careless, not because you left them. If you had managed your... indiscretions properly, we wouldn't be in this position. You married a girl from the sticks in a cheap chapel, forgot about it, and then expected me to clean up your mess when you wanted to marry into the Monroe family fortune."
"I loved Kesha," Marcus muttered, his voice weak. "At first. Before it got hard."
"Love is a luxury for people who don't have an empire to run," Patricia said coldly. She turned back to Sterling. "What is our move?"
"We file an emergency interlocutory appeal on Thursday morning," Sterling replied. "But we have a bigger problem. My team detected a major data breach on our private servers last night during the asset execution. Someone didn't just look at the Bennett files. Someone downloaded the encrypted ledger for 'Project Alpha.'"
Patricia froze, her entire body stiffening. "What did you say?"
"The Swiss clinic files, Patricia," Sterling said quietly. "If Cross gets his hands on the decryption keys for those files, he will discover Chloe. If that gets out, it’s not just a civil support issue anymore. Coerced surrender of guardianship under financial duress involving a medical crisis... that borders on extortion and human trafficking allegations. The federal authorities will get involved."
Marcus looked up, horror dawning on his face. "Mother... you said Ashley signed the papers willingly. You said Chloe was safe."
"She is safe!" Patricia hissed. "She is receiving the best care money can buy! Care her pathetic mother could never afford! If Ashley or Kesha bring that child into this courtroom, they will destroy the very fund that keeps that little girl breathing."
She walked over to her desk and picked up a secure satellite phone. "Sterling, prepare the paperwork to transfer my personal liquid accounts out of the state jurisdiction. If the trust is frozen, I will use my private capital to settle the Swiss clinic directly. We cannot let that contract default."
"I've already initiated the transfer under the 'M.B. Memorial Fund' shell account as you requested," Sterling said. "But with the court-appointed special master monitoring the system, any large movement of capital will flag immediately."
"Then do it quietly," Patricia commanded.

As Sterling bowed his head and left the office, Marcus stood up, his hand shaking as he put down his glass. "Mother... who do you think leaked the birth certificate? Who else knew about Chloe?"
Patricia looked out at the snow, her eyes narrowing into slits. "Someone inside this building. Someone who thinks they can use my family’s secrets to line their own pockets."
