Chapter 16 - Tracing the Whispers

Finding Victoria Sterling was not easy. After the arrest of her ex-husband, she had gone into hiding, terrified of retaliation from the remaining Reynolds loyalists.

But David’s paralegal, a sharp young woman named Sarah, managed to track Victoria to a quiet, secluded cottage in coastal Maine.

Within six hours, Kesha and David were in a rental car, driving north through a torrential downpour. The rain lashed against the windshield, mirroring the storm of anxiety raging in Kesha’s mind.

"Are you okay?" David asked softly, reaching over to take her hand. His touch was warm, a solid anchor in the swirling chaos.

"I’m tired, David," Kesha admitted, leaning her head against the headrest. "I thought we were done. I thought I could finally just be a mother. I wanted to teach Caleb how to garden. I wanted to help Olivia pick out her high school classes. Instead, we're chasing ghosts in the rain."

"We will get there, Kesha," David said, his voice filled with a quiet, unwavering conviction. "I promise you. Once we put Julian away, there will be no one left. The empire will be truly dead. And I’ll be there with you, helping Caleb with his garden. If you'll have me."

Kesha looked at him, her heart swelling with a warmth that she hadn't felt in a very long time. Through all of this, David had been her rock. He hadn't just been her attorney; he had become her partner, her protector, and perhaps, something more.

"I would like that very much, David," she whispered.

They arrived at Victoria's cottage just as dawn was breaking. The house was small, surrounded by wild rose bushes and the salty tang of the Atlantic Ocean.

Victoria opened the door, a cup of tea in her hand, her face pale but calm. When she saw Kesha and David, her eyes widened in surprise, but she stepped aside to let them in.

"I knew Julian would come back," Victoria said, after they had explained the situation over a crackling fire in her small living room. "Arthur always warned Patricia that Julian was the real threat. Marcus was weak, easily controlled. But Julian... Julian has no heart. He is pure intellect and pure greed."

"Can you help us, Victoria?" Kesha asked. "We need the connection between Julian's Swiss escrow and Vanguard Global. We need to prove he is using the eighty-four million to extort us."

Victoria stood up, walking over to an old wooden desk in the corner of the room. She unlocked a hidden drawer and pulled out a small, encrypted USB drive.

"When I took Arthur’s laptop, I didn't just copy the ledger from nine years ago," Victoria said, handing the drive to David. "I copied everything. Arthur was Julian's personal attorney before Julian fled to Switzerland. Arthur maintained a secret backdoor into Vanguard’s offshore trust registries in Liechtenstein. He kept it as insurance, in case Julian ever tried to ruin him."

David immediately plugged the drive into his laptop. His eyes scanned the lines of code and financial data that began to scroll down the screen.

"My God," David whispered, his face lighting up. "It’s all here. The exact routing numbers for the Aurelius Foundation. The biometric authorization codes are registered directly to Julian's Swiss identity. And there's more... Julian has already set up the transaction. The eighty-four million is scheduled to be transferred to the Department of Justice the exact minute the Project Alpha data keys are uploaded to a Vanguard server."

"That's the smoking gun," Kesha said, excitement rising in her chest. "It proves the exchange. It proves he's using stolen federal restitution funds to buy illegal research data."

"But we need to execute the exchange in a way that allows the feds to arrest him in real-time," David warned. "We need to set up a digital mirror. When we upload the encryption keys, we aren't going to send the actual Project Alpha data. We're going to send a Trojan horse—a file that contains the decryption key for Julian’s own hidden Swiss accounts, which will instantly transmit those financial records directly to the FBI."

"Can you do that?" Victoria asked, leaning over his shoulder.

"I can't," David said. "But Special Agent Vance can. We need to call the DOJ. Now."
