Chapter 9 - The Shadows of the Past

Six months after the opening of the Brooks Foundation, Clara’s story had become a beacon of inspiration across the country. Her foundation had already secured legal victories for dozens of women trapped in financially abusive relationships, and her brother Daniel’s company had successfully completed its multi-billion-dollar corporate expansion, solidifying their family’s standing in New York society.

However, peace is rarely untroubled for long when desperate people remain in the shadows.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening in late November. Clara was leaving the foundation’s office building accompanied by her head of security, a former federal agent named Marcus. As they stepped out toward the private parking garage, a figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar.

The man was drenched in rain, wearing a faded coat, his eyes wild and hollow.

"Clara..." a raspy, broken voice called out.

Marcus immediately stepped in front of Clara, his hand moving to his coat lining. "Step back, sir!"

Clara paused, looking past Marcus’s shoulder. It took her a few seconds to recognize the man standing in the dim light of the garage. It was Ethan.

His hair was matted, his face thin and gaunt. The polished, charismatic executive who had once commanded attention at board meetings was completely gone. In his place stood a man consumed by bitterness and decay.

"Ethan?" Clara said, her voice cautious but steady. "What are you doing here? You know there is a permanent restraining order in place."

"I don't care about your restraining order!" Ethan spat, taking a erratic step forward before Marcus blocked his path with an authoritative arm. "Look at me, Clara! Look at what you’ve done to me!"

"I didn't do this to you, Ethan," Clara said softly. "Your own actions did."

"You ruined my life!" Ethan screamed, his voice echoing off the damp concrete walls of the garage. "My mother is sick! Victoria left the state because of the shame! I’m working twelve hours a day making minimum wage while you live in luxury! You took everything from me!"

"You stole my money, forged my signature, and humiliated me for years," Clara replied, refusing to let her voice shake. "You received a suspended sentence instead of prison because I showed mercy. You should be grateful you aren't behind bars."

Ethan let out a manic, terrible laugh. "Grateful? You think I’m going to let you walk away and play the saint while I rot in the dirt? Your brother thinks he owns this city. But I know things, Clara. I know how Brooks Logistics operates!"

Clara’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"Before I was fired from Hamilton & Pierce, I took copies of the preliminary merger documents," Ethan sneered, pulling a small USB drive from his pocket and waving it in the air. "There are compliance gaps in your brother’s overseas supply chains. If I send this file to the federal regulatory commission, Daniel’s company will face an emergency investigation! His stock will crash!"

Clara looked at the USB drive in his hand, then up into Ethan’s unhinged eyes. A cold realization washed over her: Ethan hadn't learned a single thing. Even after hitting absolute rock bottom, he was still looking for a shortcut, still trying to intimidate and destroy others to salvage his own shattered ego.

"Are you attempting to blackmail us, Ethan?" Clara asked quietly.

"I want three million dollars," Ethan demanded, his teeth chattering from the cold and panic. "Wire three million dollars into an offshore account by tomorrow morning, or I release these files to the press and the federal authorities. You want to save your brother's reputation? Pay me!"

Clara stared at him for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone. She tapped the screen, ending an active call, and held the speaker up.

"Did you get all of that, Agent Vance?" Clara asked into the phone.

A sharp, clear voice echoed from the phone’s speaker: "We recorded every word, Ms. Brooks. The police units are entering the garage now."

Ethan’s eyes widened in sheer panic as red and blue lights suddenly flashed against the wet pavement at the garage entrance. Two police cruisers sped down the ramp, tires screeching as officers stepped out with weapons drawn.

"Ethan Carter!" an officer shouted over a megaphone. "Drop the drive and put your hands on your head! You are under arrest for felony extortion and violation of a protection order!"

Ethan looked around wildly, realizing he had walked directly into a trap. He looked at Clara, his face contorted with shock and fury. "You... you set me up!"

May you like

"You set yourself up, Ethan," Clara said, stepping into her town car as Marcus opened the door for her. "You had a chance to rebuild your life honestly. But you chose to remain a criminal."

Ethan dropped the USB drive onto the wet floor as officers tackled him to the ground, clicking handcuffs onto his wrists. As the car pulled out of the garage into the rainy street, Clara didn't look back.
