Chapter 10 - The Absolute Reckoning

The second arrest of Ethan Carter eliminated any possibility of leniency from the legal system.
With the felony extortion charges stacked on top of his previous probation violations and grand larceny record, the Manhattan District Attorney pushed for the maximum penalty allowed by law. The trial was swift, aggressive, and thoroughly covered by major media outlets, serving as a cautionary tale for white-collar crime and corporate fraud.
Six weeks later, Clara stood in the observation gallery of the Supreme Court of New York alongside Daniel and their legal team to hear the final sentencing.
Ethan stood at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands shackled at his waist. Beside him sat his court-appointed attorney, who offered no further arguments after the overwhelming audio and digital evidence had been presented.
In the gallery behind Ethan sat Eleanor Carter, looking broken, her eyes red from endless crying, accompanied by Victoria, who kept her head low to avoid the courtroom cameras.
Judge Thomas Reynolds adjusted his glasses and looked down at Ethan with severe disappointment.
"Mr. Carter," Judge Reynolds spoke, his voice echoing through the solemn courtroom. "This court has reviewed your records. You were given extraordinary opportunities in life—a top-tier education, a lucrative career at a prestigious firm, and a supportive family life. Yet, you chose a path of arrogance, systemic fraud, financial exploitation, and criminal intimidation."
Ethan kept his head bowed, tears dropping onto the wooden table.
"You treated your spouse not as a partner, but as a resource to be plundered," the judge continued sternly. "And when confronted with your misdeeds, instead of demonstrating genuine repentance, you resorted to blackmail and extortion. This court finds that you pose a persistent threat to society and show a complete lack of moral character."
Judge Reynolds struck his gavel down hard onto the sound block.
"Ethan Carter, on the counts of first-degree grand larceny, identity fraud, and felony extortion, I sentence you to a period of twelve years in state prison, without the possibility of parole for the first eight years. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay full restitution of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars upon any future release."
Eleanor let out a horrific scream from the gallery, burying her face in her hands as court officers led Ethan toward the holding cell door.
Ethan turned his head one last time as he reached the heavy metal door. His eyes met Clara’s.

There was no longer any anger in Clara’s eyes, nor any satisfaction. There was only a quiet, resolute strength. She had completely reclaimed her life, her name, and her dignity.
As the heavy iron door slammed shut behind Ethan, marking the end of his freedom, Clara took a deep, clear breath of air. The long nightmare that had begun in a hostile dining room was finally over.
