Zero nine

Chapter 4 - The Escalation

Z

The afternoon sun blazed over the city, but inside the luxury suburban home of Eleanor Carter, the atmosphere was frozen solid. Eleanor paced back and forth across the marble living room floor, clutching a legal notice that had just been hand-delivered by a process server.

Ethan sat on the sofa, his head buried in his hands. His phone lay shattered on the glass coffee table—a victim of a fit of rage after his corporate credit cards were declined at a local garage.

"How could this happen?!" Eleanor screamed, waving the paper in the air. "She froze the accounts! The bank just called me—the mortgage payment bounced! They’re threatening to initiate foreclosure proceedings on this house within thirty days if the arrears aren't cleared!"

"She can't do this!" Victoria cried out from the armchair, staring at her own phone. "My card was rejected at the salon! Everyone was looking at me! Ethan, do something!"

"Shut up!" Ethan yelled, sitting up abruptly. His eyes were red, his hairline damp with sweat. "You think I wanted this? I didn't know her brother was Daniel Brooks! I thought he was working in some rundown garage in Pennsylvania! How was I supposed to know he owned an international corporation?"

"You should have checked!" Eleanor countered fiercely. "You spent three years belittling her family without ever verifying who they were! You let your arrogance blind you!"

"You were the one who told me to keep her in her place!" Ethan shot back, standing up and pointing an accusing finger at his mother. "You told me that if I gave her too much confidence, she’d start asking questions about where her paycheck was going! You helped me set up those transfer accounts!"

"Both of you stop it!" Victoria yelled. "Arguing isn't going to fix our credit cards! What are we going to do about Hamilton & Pierce? Ethan, if you lose your job, we're completely ruined!"

Ethan took a deep breath, trying to force his trembling mind to function logically. He was a corporate strategist; he was trained to find leverage in high-stakes negotiations. There had to be a flaw in Clara's defenses, an opening he could exploit.

"She’s emotional," Ethan muttered, walking over to the window. "Clara is weak-willed. She loved me for three years. She did everything I asked her to do. She’s just reacting because her brother is filling her head with grand ideas. If I can get her away from Daniel, if I can talk to her alone, I can manipulate her into dropping the charges."

"And if she refuses?" Eleanor asked, her eyes narrowing.

"She won't refuse," Ethan sneered, a desperate, dark confidence returning to his face. "Clara cares about her reputation. She cares about her quiet little life. She doesn't have the stomach for a filthy, public court fight. I’ll go to her apartment. I’ll make her realize that if she ruins me, I’ll take her down with me."

An hour later, Ethan drove his sedan toward the modest apartment complex where he and Clara had lived during the first two years of their marriage—the place Clara had kept in her name as a backup rental property. He assumed she would run back to what was familiar and simple.

When he arrived at the building, he bypassed the intercom and slipped through the front entrance behind a tenant. He marched up the stairs to the third floor, his fists clenched, his mind racing with speeches of fake remorse mixed with subtle threats.

He pounded on the door of Apartment 3B.

"Clara! Open the door!" Ethan demanded loudly, knocking again. "We need to talk like adults! You can't hide behind your brother forever!"

The door opened slowly.

Ethan prepared to force his way inside, but he froze dead in his tracks. Standing in the doorway was not Clara. It was a broad-shouldered man in a dark suit holding a clipboard, flanked by two uniformed officers from the New York Police Department.

"Ethan Carter?" one of the officers asked, comparing Ethan's face to a photograph on his tablet.

Ethan stepped back, his heart plunging into his stomach. "Yes... what is this? What's going on?"

"Mr. Carter, you are being served with a temporary restraining order issued by the New York State Supreme Court on behalf of Clara Brooks," the officer stated calmly, stepping forward and handing Ethan a thick packet of legal documents. "Furthermore, you are instructed to step away from this entrance immediately."

"Restraining order?" Ethan gasped, his voice squeaking. "This is my property too!"

"According to the land registry records updated this afternoon, this property is exclusively registered under the ownership of Clara Brooks," the second officer interjected firmly. "You have no legal right to be on these premises. If you attempt to contact Ms. Brooks directly, indirectly, or come within five hundred feet of her residence or temporary address, you will be arrested on the spot."

"This is insane!" Ethan shouted, waving his arms wildly. "She’s my wife!"

"Not for long, Mr. Carter," a voice spoke from inside the apartment.

Daniel stepped out into the hallway, standing behind the officers. He looked at Ethan with an expression of cold pity.

"Every move you make, Ethan, has already been anticipated," Daniel said softly. "You thought you were playing chess with a helpless opponent. But you were playing alone, and you’ve already lost. Go home. Prepare your defense. Because tomorrow, the grand jury receives the evidence of your financial forgery."

Ethan looked from the police officers to Daniel, the legal documents trembling in his hand. The ground beneath his feet was crumbling faster than he could run, and for the first time, he felt the icy bite of absolute powerlessness.
