Chapter 2 - The Fallout at Hamilton & Pierce

Z

The silence inside the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Hamilton & Pierce building was far more suffocating than any screaming match could ever be. Ethan Carter stood near the polished mahogany table, his knuckles turning stark white as he gripped the back of an empty leather chair. Cold sweat trickled down the back of his neck, soaking into the collar of his bespoke Italian suit—a suit he had purchased using a prospective bonus that was now evaporating into thin air right before his eyes.

Across the room sat Richard Hamilton, the senior founding partner whose word was absolute law in the firm, alongside four board members and two corporate legal representatives. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass panel overlooking the foggy Manhattan skyline was Daniel Brooks. Daniel did not look like a man seeking crude revenge; he looked like a seasoned surgeon about to perform a necessary, precise incision.

"Ethan," Richard Hamilton spoke, his voice clipped and devoid of any warmth. "Do you recognize the footage we were just shown?"

Ethan swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "Mr. Hamilton, sir, please... you have to understand the context. That was a private family gathering. It was a joke among relatives. Things were taken out of context by an outsider who had no right—"

"A joke?" Daniel turned around slowly, his hands resting casually in his trouser pockets. "You called your wife useless in front of a dozen people. You ridiculed her for wearing clothes she worked overtime to afford while you were living off her salary during your early years at this firm. You openly questioned her worth and mocked her background."

"You don't know anything about my marriage!" Ethan snapped, panic cracking his voice. He pointed an aggressive finger at Daniel. "Who do you think you are to come in here and sabotage a multi-billion-dollar corporate deal over a personal domestic spat? This acquisition benefits Hamilton & Pierce and your investors! Personal matters should remain personal!"

Daniel walked over to the table with steady, measured steps. He leaned down slightly, placing both palms flat on the surface as he looked directly into Ethan's bloodshot eyes. "My name is Daniel Brooks. I am the Chief Executive Officer and majority shareholder of Brooks Logistics International. And the woman you publicly degraded, lied to, and emotionally abused for three straight years happens to be my younger sister, Clara."

Ethan’s breath hitched. His jaw dropped, and the color drained completely from his face until he looked like a corpse standing in the center of the boardroom. The realization hit him like a physical blow. The "poor mechanic brother" he had mocked at the dinner table just twelve hours ago was the legendary tech mogul whose company held the key to the largest financial venture of Ethan’s career.

"You..." Ethan stuttered, looking desperately toward Richard Hamilton for support. "Mr. Hamilton, this is personal spite! He's using his position to conduct a personal vendetta against me!"

Richard raised a hand to silence him. "Enough, Ethan. What you fail to comprehend is that Brooks Logistics International represents over forty percent of our projected quarterly revenue growth. Furthermore, our firm maintains a strict zero-tolerance code regarding public misconduct and ethical breaches by senior associates. The video footage circulated to the board this morning does not merely show a private disagreement; it demonstrates a alarming lack of character, judgment, and basic human respect."

"I can fix this!" Ethan pleaded, taking a step toward the executive table. "I’ll apologize to Clara! I’ll go on my knees if I have to! I’ll issue a public statement! Just don't freeze the acquisition agreement, please!"

"The acquisition discussions are officially suspended pending a complete internal review," Richard stated firmly. "In the meantime, Ethan Carter, you are placed on immediate, unpaid administrative leave. Security will escort you to your office to collect your personal belongings. You are not to contact any client of Hamilton & Pierce, nor are you permitted on these premises until further notice."

Two tall, uniformed security guards stepped into the boardroom from the side door.

"Mr. Carter," one of the guards said sternly, gesturing toward the exit. "Please follow us."

Ethan stood frozen, looking around the room in absolute disbelief. The colleagues who had praised him yesterday now refused to meet his eyes. The deal that was supposed to make him a partner at the age of thirty-two had transformed into the anchor that was pulling his career to the very bottom of the ocean.

As he was led out of the boardroom, Ethan caught Daniel’s gaze one last time. Daniel’s expression remained unreadable, calm, and detached. There was no rage in his eyes—only the quiet, formidable resolve of a brother who had returned to shield what remained of his family.

Downstairs in the lobby, news of Ethan’s sudden suspension had already spread through the corporate grapevine. Coworkers whispered behind glass dividers as he walked past his desk under security supervision. He shoved his personal items into a cardboard box—a silver desk clock, a framed picture of himself at a charity gala, and a pen set Clara had bought him for his first promotion. Looking at the pen set, Ethan felt a sudden surge of irrational anger.

He threw the box into the backseat of his luxury sedan and slammed the door shut. Sitting in the driver's seat, his hands shook violently on the steering wheel. His phone rang incessantly—calls from his mother, his sister, and his personal broker. He ignored them all and dialed Clara’s number instead.

It went straight to voicemail.

"Clara!" Ethan screamed into the phone speaker, his voice cracking with fury and terror. "Call me back right now! What the hell did you tell your brother? Do you have any idea what you’ve done to my career? You’re destroying everything I’ve worked for! Call me back!"

He threw the phone onto the passenger seat and pressed his forehead against the leather wheel. For the first time in his life, the financial safety net he had taken for granted was tearing at the seams. And deep down, a terrifying truth began to settle into his mind: the quiet, gentle woman he had spent years pushing down was no longer alone, and she was no longer willing to take his abuse.
