Chapter 5 - The Corporate Purge

Z

By Thursday morning, the suspension of the multi-billion-dollar acquisition between Brooks Logistics International and Hamilton & Pierce Capital had sent shockwaves through the financial sector. Speculation was rampant across Wall Street trading floors, causing Hamilton & Pierce’s public stock value to take a sharp four percent dip before the opening bell even rang.

Inside the firm's top-floor executive suite, an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors was convened. Richard Hamilton presided over the table, his face stern and unreadable. Beside him sat the head of internal compliance and corporate legal counsel.

Ethan Carter stood at the foot of the table, looking disheveled despite his best efforts to maintain a professional appearance. Dark circles framed his eyes, and his tie was slightly askew. He was accompanied by a private defense attorney he had hired with the last available credit line he possessed.

"Gentlemen," Ethan’s lawyer began, clearing his throat. "My client maintains that the allegations regarding his personal life are entirely separate from his professional performance. The personal domestic dispute between Mr. Carter and his estranged spouse should not impact a corporate transaction of this magnitude."

"Separate from his performance?" Richard Hamilton leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. He pressed a button on the conference phone. "Let's review the findings of our internal audit, shall we?"

The compliance officer opened a ledger. "Over the past forty-eight hours, following the suspension of the acquisition, our team conducted a thorough audit of all accounts managed by Mr. Carter over the last three years. We discovered systematic irregularities."

Ethan felt the air leave his lungs. "Irregularities? What are you talking about?"

"You diverted corporate expense accounts to cover personal luxury expenditures, Ethan," the compliance officer said coldly. "Client entertainment funds were routinely routed to pay for private dining, high-end apparel purchases, and family resort stays for your mother and sister. You logged these expenses under fictitious client meetings."

"That... those were legitimate networking events!" Ethan stuttered, looking desperately toward his lawyer, who remained silent, realizing the severity of the evidence.

"Networking events with your mother?" Richard Hamilton sneered, his voice laced with disdain. "Furthermore, we received an official communication from the District Attorney’s office this morning. They are investigating a case of bank fraud and identity theft involving forged signatures on real estate assets belonging to your wife. The reputation of Hamilton & Pierce is being dragged through the dirt because of your greed and arrogance."

"Mr. Hamilton, please!" Ethan stepped forward, his composure completely collapsing. "I built the foundation for this deal! I brought Brooks Logistics to the table! You can't kick me out now!"

"You didn't bring Brooks Logistics to the table, Ethan," Richard said, standing up and towering over him. "Brooks Logistics came to us because Daniel Brooks was testing our firm's integrity. And you failed that test miserably. You proved to be a liability, a liability that is currently costing this firm millions of dollars."

Richard signaled to the legal counsel. "Ethan Carter, your employment with Hamilton & Pierce is terminated immediately for cause. You will receive no severance, no stock option vesting, and the firm will be filing a formal complaint with the financial regulatory authorities regarding your fraudulent expense accounting."

"You can't do this to me!" Ethan screamed, his voice echoing in the vast room as security guards stepped in once again to grasp his arms. "I made this firm millions! You're sacrificing me for a client!"

"We are purging a cancer before it destroys the whole body," Richard replied without looking back as he gathered his papers. "Get him out of my sight."

Ethan was forcibly marched out of the corporate building through the main entrance, where several financial journalists and photojournalists were waiting. Flashbulbs went off rapidly, capturing the iconic image of the once-rising Wall Street star being booted onto the sidewalk in disgrace.

Sitting across the street in a sleek black town car, Clara watched the scene play out through tinted glass. She sat beside Daniel, holding a hot coffee cup in her hands.

Seeing Ethan brought down to the street level didn't bring her a sense of cruel joy; instead, it brought an incredible sense of relief. The monster that had loomed over her life for three years, making her feel small, useless, and weak, was nothing more than a fragile man built on lies and borrowed money.

"Are you ready for the next step?" Daniel asked softly, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

Clara turned away from the window and looked at her brother with a firm, unwavering smile. "Yes. It's time to take back everything he stole from me."
