Chapter 7 - The Silent House

Z
The Moretti estate had never felt so quiet, yet for the first time in three years, the silence was not ominous; it was serene.
Adrian spent Saturday morning walking through the long corridors of the east wing. He had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars retrofitting the mansion with soundproofing, blackout shutters, and elaborate environmental controls during his desperate quest for rest. Today, he opened every single window, letting the crisp autumn air sweep through the rooms, blowing away the stale scent of lavender, bergamot, and manufactured illness.
Mrs. Ricci had been quietly dismissed with a generous pension. While Gabriel’s investigation proved the elderly housekeeper had not been a co-conspirator, her blind obedience in preparing the special tea blends Dominic brought to the kitchen had made her a liability Adrian could no longer tolerate in his home.
Nora Carter stood near the entryway of the main salon, holding a stack of freshly laundered linens. Her eyes were cautious, filled with the lingering anxiety of an employee who had witnessed a terrifying family war erupt inside the household.
Adrian approached her, stopping a respectful distance away.
“Nora,” he said gently.
She stiffened slightly. “Yes, Mr. Moretti?”
Adrian noticed the tension in her shoulders and felt a pang of guilt. For eleven months, she had lived under the roof of an unpredictable, exhausted employer, walking on eggshells to protect her job and her child.
“I wanted to personally apologize to you,” Adrian said, his tone warm and sincere. “You and Lily were subjected to tension and danger in this house that you never deserved. If it weren't for Lily... I might not be standing here today.”
Nora’s eyes softened, a wave of visible relief washing over her face. “She didn't know what she was doing, Mr. Moretti. She just loves telling stories.”
“Her story saved my life,” Adrian replied.
He reached into his pocket and handed her an envelope bearing the embossed seal of Moretti Capital.
Nora looked at it hesitantly. “What is this?”
“A fully funded educational trust in Lily’s name,” Adrian explained. “It covers her private schooling, her university tuition anywhere in the world, and provides a housing stipend for you both. In addition, your salary here has been doubled, and your contract is guaranteed for the next ten years, regardless of whether you choose to stay or move elsewhere.”
Tears welled in Nora’s eyes as she held the envelope against her chest. “Mr. Moretti... I don't know what to say. This is too much.”
“It’s a fraction of what you gave back to me,” Adrian said softly. “You gave me back my future.”
Just then, the sound of tiny footsteps echoed across the polished oak floorboards.
Lily came running into the salon, clutching her patched stuffed rabbit by its long ear. She stopped abruptly when she saw Adrian, tilting her head with innocent curiosity.
Adrian crouched down on one knee, bringing himself level with the little girl.
“Good morning, Lily,” he said with a genuine smile.
“Good morning,” she chirped. She looked at his face closely, her bright blue eyes examining him with serious contemplation. “Your eyes aren't dark like a raccoon anymore.”
Nora gasped in embarrassment. “Lily! That’s rude!”
Adrian let out a rich, genuine laugh—a sound that had not echoed within the high ceilings of the Moretti estate in nearly four years.
“It’s entirely accurate, Nora,” Adrian chuckled. He looked back at Lily. “That’s because the lion finally learned how to sleep.”
Lily smiled proudly, holding up her rabbit. “Barnaby says we should have chocolate pancakes again.”

Adrian stood up and extended his hand toward her.
“I think Barnaby makes an excellent point,” Adrian said. “Let’s go negotiate with the chef.”
