Chapter 5 - Blood in the Water

The boardroom instantly descended into absolute chaos.

“You’re bluffing!” Dominic snarled, his voice cracking under the weight of sheer desperation. He leaned across the table, pointing a shaking finger at Adrian. “You have no proof of anything! You have some fabricated medical papers and wild accusations! I built this company while you were lying in bed weeping over dad’s death! I kept the lights on!”

“You didn't build anything,” Adrian replied with devastating precision. “You carved pieces out of our father’s legacy and sold them to Uncle Salvatore for pennies while keeping the controlling kickbacks for yourself.”

Dr. Sterling, the forensic toxicologist, stepped forward and cleared his throat.

“At 6:30 this morning, my laboratory processed two distinct biological and chemical samples provided under strict chain of custody,” Dr. Sterling stated clearly for the record. “The first was an unmarked amber vial recovered from Mr. Dominic Moretti’s private vehicle during a court-ordered preservation sweep executed an hour ago. The second was a sample of Earl Grey tea retrieved directly from Adrian Moretti’s dining table last night. Both samples contain identical concentrations of Modafinil derivatives combined with high-grade synthetic catecholamine agonists. In lay terms: a chemical cocktail designed specifically to prevent sleep, induce extreme neurological agitation, and simulate early-onset dementia without triggering standard hospital toxicology screens.”

Elena Rostova turned on Dominic with venom in her eyes. “You sick bastard. You poisoned your own flesh and blood?”

Dominic’s breathing turned shallow. He looked around the table, desperately searching for an ally among the faces that had flattered him only twenty minutes earlier.

“Julian!” Dominic pleaded, grabbing the old lawyer’s arm. “Say something! Tell them this is a procedural violation! Tell them the emergency charter is already active!”

Julian Vance slowly pulled his arm away from Dominic’s grasp. The veteran attorney looked down at his own trembling hands, knowing with absolute certainty that his career, his freedom, and his reputation had just been obliterated.

“There is no defense, Dominic,” Vance whispered hollowly. “They have the wire transfers. They have the corporate filings. It’s over.”

Salvatore suddenly shoved his chair back, the heavy metal legs screeching loudly against the hardwood floor. He made a desperate move toward the boardroom exit, but the heavy double doors swung open before he could take three steps.

Four uniformed Massachusetts State Troopers and two federal agents in dark suits entered the room, their badges gleaming under the recessed LED lights.

“Salvatore Moretti? Julian Vance? Dominic Moretti?” the lead agent asked, holding up a federal arrest warrant. “You are all under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, and attempted aggravated assault via chemical administration.”

Salvatore slumped against the wall, offering no resistance as a trooper pulled his arms behind his back and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. Vance closed his eyes and extended his hands across the table like an obedient child awaiting punishment.

Dominic, however, backed slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Boston Harbor.

“Adrian, please,” Dominic gasped, his arrogance completely evaporating into a pathetic, sniveling terror. Tears welled in his eyes as he looked at the older brother who had protected him his entire life. “It wasn't my idea! Salvatore came to me! He said you were going to destroy the family! He said you were giving everything to outsiders! I was just trying to keep the business in our hands!”

Adrian walked slowly around the marble table until he stood three feet from Dominic. He looked at his younger brother not with hatred, not with fury, but with a profound, chilling detachment.

“When dad died, the last thing he said to me was to take care of you,” Adrian said, his voice barely above a whisper, yet loud enough to echo in the deathly silent room. “For three years, I thought I was failing him because I couldn't stay awake long enough to protect you from the pressure. Every single night, while I lay in the dark wondering if my brain was dying, you were downstairs sleeping peacefully in the house our father gave you.”

“I’m sorry!” Dominic sobbed, falling to his knees on the plush carpet. “Adrian, please don't let them take me! We can settle this privately! We’re brothers!”

“Brothers don't feed each other poison, Dominic,” Adrian said coldly.

Adrian stepped back and nodded to the federal agents. Two officers moved in swiftly, hauling Dominic up by his tailored suit jacket and securing his wrists behind his back.

As Dominic was dragged toward the exit, wailing and begging for mercy, Adrian did not watch him leave. He turned back toward the remaining board members, who were staring at him with a mixture of terror and awe.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Adrian announced smoothly, adjusting his cufflinks. “Now that the distractions have been removed, let us proceed to the quarterly financial review.”
