Chapter 13 - The Hostage of Pride

The arrest of Victoria Moretti-Sterling dominated the international business news cycle for seventy-two hours, but beneath the sensational headlines, a darker current was moving in the underworld of international finance.
Victoria’s desperate threats were not entirely empty.
In the high-stakes world of offshore capital, debts do not disappear when a conspirator is jailed; they merely transfer to more ruthless hands. Salvatore’s long-standing debts in Southern Italy had been purchased by a private syndicate based in Lugano—men who operated behind legitimate hedge funds while using private military contractors to enforce their claims.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, three weeks after Victoria’s indictment, Adrian was in the middle of an emergency audit review at his downtown office when his personal satellite phone—a secure line known only to Gabriel and Nora—began to ring with an urgent chime.
Adrian answered immediately. “Adrian.”
“Mr. Moretti!” Nora’s voice came through the speaker, breathless, trembling, and choked with pure terror. “They... they tried to stop our car!”
Adrian shot up from his desk, knocking his leather chair backward. “Nora! Where are you? Is Lily with you?”
“We were driving back from her preschool on the private access road near Route 128!” Nora sobbed, the sound of rain and roaring engines audible in the background. “A black SUV blocked the road, and two men with guns got out! Marcus rammed through their bumper like you told him to, but they’re following us! They’re shooting at the tires!”
Marcus was a former Tier-1 military specialist Adrian had hired as Nora and Lily’s dedicated driver and bodyguard following Victoria’s threats.
“Put Marcus on speaker right now!” Adrian demanded, sprinting toward the executive elevator while signaling Gabriel across the floor.
A deep, calm, gravelly voice cut through the phone. “Mr. Moretti. I have both passengers secured in the armored Suburban. Rear left tire has been clipped by small-arms fire, run-flat core is engaged. We have two pursuit vehicles: a black Tahoe and an Audi sedan. They’re trying to force us off the road into the Blue Hills reservation corridor.”
“Marcus, listen to me,” Adrian commanded, stepping into the elevator as Gabriel joined him, cocking his pistol inside his trench coat. “Do not try to make it back to the estate. The gate is too exposed. Head directly for the State Police barracks on Route 138. It’s four miles south.”
“Negative on Route 138, sir,” Marcus replied with grim professionalism. “The Audi just cut across the median and blocked the highway on-ramp. They’re forcing me into the old quarry access road. It’s a dead end.”
Adrian felt a surge of cold, murderous adrenaline that tore through his veins like wildfire. For three years, enemies had attacked his health, his mind, and his legacy. He had responded with corporate maneuvers, legal subpoenas, and calm strategic counter-punches.
But threatening Nora and Lily crossed a threshold where corporate strategy ended and primal war began.
“Hold the vehicle, Marcus,” Adrian snarled into the receiver. “Do not let them breach the doors. I am seven minutes away.”
Adrian hung up, turning to Gabriel as the elevator reached the underground parking garage. “Call the tactical aviation unit we placed on standby at Logan. I want the helicopter in the air over the Blue Hills quarry in three minutes. And Gabriel?”

Gabriel looked at him, his face hard as flint. “Yes, Adrian?”
“Bring the heavy rifles.”
