Zero nine

Chapter 8

The words echoed through the cold basement bunker, cutting through me like a physical blade. My knees gave out, and Ethan caught me before I hit the floor, pulling me tight against his chest as the recording continued to play.

"Beatrice was never the innocent wife she pretended to be," my father’s recorded voice continued, his eyes filled with immense sorrow. "When my business ran into trouble twenty years ago, she introduced me to Marcus Vance. She had been working for Elysium long before we met. Her job was to find respectable, clean professionals and drag them into financial traps so Elysium could use their legitimate businesses for laundering."

I covered my mouth with trembling hands, tears burning my eyes. My entire life—my childhood, my family, my parents' marriage—had been an elaborate, calculated lie.

"When I discovered what they were doing and tried to go to the federal authorities," my father said, "Beatrice poisoned my medication. She made it look like a fatal heart attack to collect the life insurance and secure her place in the organization. Claire, if she is at your door, do not trust her. She will destroy you just like she destroyed me."

The video cut to black, leaving an absolute, horrifying silence in the room.

Ethan’s grip around me tightened, his body trembling with raw fury. "She used Darren... she used Melissa... she used everyone to destroy you."

"She didn't just slap me," I whispered, my voice hollow as the pieces of the nightmare finally clicked together. "When she slapped me in our living room... when she called me a gold digger... she was projecting. She was describing herself."

"Claire," Major Miller spoke up softly, pointing at the monitor where new files were unzipping. "Look at the live server logs."

I forced myself to pull away from Ethan and look at the screen. The flash drive hadn't just opened static files; it had initiated an automated, hardwired breach into Elysium’s core financial database using my father’s old master credentials.

Real-time transaction logs were flashing across the monitor.

"They're liquidating everything right now," I said, my analytical instincts kicking in through the shock. "Victoria Sterling and DA Vance realize the ledger is out of the vault. They’re transferring over fifty million dollars in illegal syndicate funds out of the country before the grand jury can freeze their assets."

"Where is the master server located?" Ethan demanded.

I typed rapidly, tracing the routing nodes. "It’s not at a bank. It’s located at my mother’s private estate in the hills... the home my father built."

Ethan turned to Major Miller. "How fast can you get us tactical gear and an unmarked vehicle?"

May you like

Major Miller pulled open a heavy weapons locker, revealing row upon row of tactical vests, assault rifles, and breaching equipment. "Five minutes, Vance. And I’m coming with you."

"No," I said, standing up, wiping the tears from my eyes, my voice hardening into pure steel. "I’m leading this. My mother spent my whole life treating me like a pawn in her game. Today, I finish it."
