Chapter 4

"You have twenty-four hours to produce four point two million dollars, or Elysium Holdings initiates foreclosure proceedings on this property," Victoria Sterling said, her voice dripping with calculated arrogance. "And don't bother calling the local police. A civil contract dispute over a notarized loan guarantee isn't something a beat cop can fix."
Ethan stepped into Victoria’s personal space, his imposing military frame instantly causing her two security guards to tense up, their hands twitching toward their jackets.
"Get off my property," Ethan commanded, his voice low, vibrating with absolute lethal intent. "Before I treat you and your hired muscle as an active security threat to military personnel."
Victoria didn't flinch, but her eyes flicked to the insignia pin on Ethan’s uniform collar. "We will be back at noon tomorrow with a federal marshal and an eviction warrant, Captain. Have your bags packed."
She turned on her high heels and walked down the driveway, her guards trailing closely behind.
I slammed the front door shut, my chest heaving as rage overtook the shock. "She’s lying about the digital signature. I never generated a key for my mother's financial papers!"
"Come back to the study," Ethan said, pulling out his phone again. "We need to look at that contract signature line right now."
We rushed back to the monitors. I scanned the document Victoria had handed me, converting the PDF into a raw hexadecimal file to inspect the metadata embedded in the digital signature block. Within seconds, the truth exposed itself on the screen.
"Look here," I pointed to a line of code highlighted in yellow. "The digital key was generated three weeks ago, from an IP address inside this very house."
Ethan leaned in closer. "Three weeks ago... right after you let Darren and Melissa move in."
"Darren didn't just steal Ethan’s military service number," I realized, the horror dawning on me. "When Melissa moved into my closet, she found my secondary hard drive—the one containing my encrypted master keys from my old contractor job. Darren used a keylogger software on my home network to steal my master password!"
"They didn't just want to steal the house, Claire," Ethan said, his voice deadly calm. "They set you up to take the fall for your father's entire four-million-dollar debt to Elysium. If you went to prison for fraud, Elysium would automatically seize the house through default."
"It’s a triangle scheme," I whispered. "My mother, Darren, and Victoria Sterling were all working together. My mother gets her debt erased, Darren gets a cut of the liquidation, and Victoria gets to launder four million dollars of corporate syndicate money through a legal foreclosure!"
Suddenly, my desk phone rang. It was the detention center downtown.
I hit the speaker button. "Hello?"
"Claire... please..." My mother’s voice came through the speaker, breathless and terrified. The arrogant tone she had used while slapping me last night was entirely gone, replaced by desperate weeping. "You have to help us. Darren is in solitary... Melissa is hysterically screaming at the guards... they won't let us out on bail!"
"You forged my master signature to hand my home over to a cartel front, Mom," I said, feeling cold and detached. "You deserve to rot in there."
"You don't understand!" she wailed. "Victoria Sterling... she’s not just a lawyer! If we don't deliver the house to her by tomorrow, she’s going to make sure Darren and I don't survive until the trial! She has people inside the detention facility!"
"Then you better start talking to the prosecutor," I replied sharply.
"Claire, wait!" my mother cried. "There’s a safe deposit box at the First National Bank on 5th Street. Box number 408. Your father left something in there before he died. He said... he said if Elysium ever came for us, that box was our only insurance policy. The key is hidden inside the frame of your wedding picture!"
I hung up the phone without another word.

Ethan immediately walked over to the mantelpiece, lifted the heavy wooden frame of our wedding photo, and popped open the backing. Taped to the corner of the velvet lining was a small, silver brass key with the number 408 stamped onto its side.
"We go to the bank," Ethan said, reaching for his car keys. "Now."
