Chapter 3

Sleep didn't come that night. By dawn, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, suffocating clarity. The threat resting on my phone wasn't just a bluff; it was a ghost from a past I thought had been buried alongside my father.
While Ethan coordinated with his military intelligence contacts in the living room, I sat at my desk in the study, surrounded by three glowing monitors. My fingers flew across the keyboard as I executed deep-data traces on the phone number that had sent the text. As a former forensic accountant for federal contractors, I knew that even the most sophisticated burner phones left digital breadcrumbs.
The line bounced from a tower in downtown Atlanta to a proxy server in Panama, but the ultimate origin point made my blood run cold: a private wealth management firm registered under the name Elysium Holdings.
I pulled up the corporate filings. Elysium Holdings was the primary lien holder on my mother’s estate.
"Find anything?" Ethan asked, stepping into the room with two mugs of black coffee. He set one down next to my mousepad, his eyes scanning the dense spreadsheets cluttering my screens.
"More than I bargained for," I muttered, rubbing my tired eyes. "The men my mother owes money to aren't low-level loan sharks. Elysium Holdings is a front for a high-level financial crime syndicate. My father didn't just borrow money from them; he helped them set up a money-laundering pipeline through real estate across the Southeast."
"And when he died, the debt defaulted to your mother," Ethan reasoned, leaning over my shoulder.
"Exactly. And when Darren’s business went under, my mother realized Elysium was coming to collect. That’s why they tried to steal this house. It wasn't just greed, Ethan. It was desperation. They were going to use my property as collateral to save their own skins."
"That explains the sudden push for the transfer," Ethan said, his jaw tightening. "But why targeted you? Your brother has assets. Your mother has her own property."
"Because my name is clean," I said, turning my chair to face him. "I have a top-level security clearance, no debt, and a high-value asset paid in full. If Elysium absorbed my house, the transaction would pass federal scrutiny without raising a single red flag."
Before Ethan could reply, the heavy chime of our front doorbell echoed through the house.
Ethan’s hand instinctively drifted to the side holster he was wearing beneath his civilian jacket. "Stay here."
"Not a chance," I said, standing up. "This is my war, Ethan."
We walked down the hallway together, the tension in the air thick enough to slice with a knife. Ethan checked the smart-doorbell feed on his phone. Standing on the porch wasn't a armed thug, but a woman in a immaculate ivory power suit, carrying a leather briefcase, accompanied by two men in dark suits holding tactical earpieces.
Ethan unlocked the door, opening it just enough to block the entryway. "Can I help you?"
The woman offered a sharp, perfectly rehearsed smile that didn't reach her cold green eyes. "Captain Vance. Mrs. Vance. My name is Victoria Sterling. I represent Elysium Holdings."
I stepped around Ethan, meeting her gaze head-on despite the dark bruise blooming across my jaw. "You're bold, coming here after sending that text."
Victoria laughed softly, a dry, dismissive sound. "Text? I assure you, Mrs. Vance, my firm operates strictly within the bounds of legal financial recovery. I’m here because your mother, Beatrice, signed a secondary indemnity clause six months ago, pledging all familial real estate assets as cross-collateral for her outstanding balance of 4.2 million dollars."
She opened her briefcase, pulled out a thick document, and handed it forward.
I took the papers and immediately flipped to the signature page. My stomach dropped into a cold abyss.
There, signed in neat, blue ink right below my mother’s name, was my own signature.

"This is a forgery," I snapped, my voice steady despite the hammer of my heart.
"Is it?" Victoria’s smile broadened, turning predatory. "Because it was notarized by a state official, witnessed by your brother Darren, and verified via your personal digital signature key. As far as the courts are concerned, Claire, you guaranteed your mother’s debt. And since she was arrested last night for fraud, the full balance is officially due. By noon tomorrow."
