Chapter 14

"You press that button, and you lose fifty million dollars, Julian," I said, stepping past Ethan into the ruined study, my flashlight beam focused squarely on Julian’s face.
Julian chuckled, a arrogant, mocking sound that sounded far too much like his sister's. "Fifty million? Claire, you really are just a low-level accountant, aren't you? You only saw the secondary ledger. You didn't see the primary master account."
I narrowed my eyes. "What primary master account?"
"Your father didn't just log fifty million dollars," Julian smiled, his eyes glinting with twisted triumph. "That was just the operational pocket change. The real fund—the global account built over twenty years of military defense skimming—holds four hundred million dollars. And this hard drive holds the only biometrically locked private key in existence."
Ethan didn't lower his rifle. "And you think you're walking out of here with it?"
"I know I am," Julian said, taking a step toward the open window behind him. "Because five seconds ago, my automated system sent a signal to the local precinct. A dozen SWAT officers are pulled up outside right now under the impression that an armed terrorist cell is holding me hostage inside this house. If you shoot me, you die in a hail of police bullets."
Outside, heavy sirens suddenly wailed, followed by the deafening sound of a bullhorn echoing across our front lawn:
"THIS IS THE ATLANTA SWAT TEAM! THE HOUSE IS SURROUNDED! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND STEP OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!"
Julian’s smile broadened. "You see, Captain? The Vance family always controls the narrative. Now, drop the gun, or watch your wife get framed for terrorism."
Ethan didn't blink. "You forgot one thing, Julian."
"Oh? And what’s that?"
"You assumed the men outside were local SWAT," Ethan said calmly.
Suddenly, the glass windows of the study shattered inward as four stun grenades bounced onto the floor. White blinding light and deafening explosions filled the room.
Julian screamed, dropping the thermite grenade as he was thrown backward by the concussion shockwave. Ethan instantly tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms and snatching the master hard drive from his grip before it touched the ground.
Heavy tactical boots kicked open the remaining doors. Fully armored soldiers bearing military intelligence insignias flooded the room, securing Julian within seconds.
Major Miller stepped through the smoke, holding a heavy radio transmitter. " perimeter secure, Captain Vance. The local precinct was cleared by federal authority ten minutes ago. This whole neighborhood is under military jurisdiction."

Julian spat blood onto the floor, staring up at Ethan with pure hatred. "You... you can't hold me... my father—"
"Your father was arrested at his desk in the Pentagon fifteen minutes ago," Major Miller interrupted coldly. "It’s over, son."
