Zero nine

Chapter 11

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting harsh golden light over the ruined estate as federal agents wrapped my mother in a shock blanket and led her toward a waiting armored vehicle. She didn't look back at me. She didn't plead, scream, or cry. The revelation of her ultimate betrayal had stripped away every layer of deception she had spent decades building.

Ethan squeezed my shoulder, his voice gentle amidst the sea of flashing red and blue lights. "The FBI director just confirmed it. The entire network is being dismantled as we speak. Victoria’s contacts in Miami, Panama, and Washington are all being rounded up."

I held my father’s leather ledger tight against my chest. "And Darren? Melissa?"

"Their bail was officially revoked thirty minutes ago," Ethan replied. "With the digital keylogger evidence and the fake notarization, Darren is facing federal conspiracy and identity theft charges. Melissa is being held as an accessory."

I took a deep breath, feeling a strange mix of profound exhaustion and absolute liberation. "I want to go home, Ethan."

Two hours later, we stepped back into our living room. The scent of rain still hung in the air, but the feeling of intrusion was gone. Ethan walked over to the bookshelf, dismounted the security camera that had started it all, and handed me the small SD card.

"What do we do now?" he asked softly.

"We rebuild," I said, looking around the quiet house. "Starting with wiping every digital trace they touched."

I sat down at my personal terminal to run a routine sweep of our encrypted home network, clearing out the remnants of Darren’s keylogger. But as the diagnostic tool scanned the secondary partitions, a red warning box suddenly flashed on my screen:

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED: OUTGOING DATA STREAM ACTIVE

My heart skipped a beat. "Ethan... look at this."

Ethan leaned over my shoulder, his jaw tightening as he read the code. "The server in your mother's house was just a backup. Someone is actively downloading our home network archives right now."

"That's impossible," I muttered, my fingers flying across the keys to trace the IP address. "Victoria is dead, DA Vance is in custody, and my mother is locked in a federal holding cell. Who else had access to our network?"

The trace bounced through three local proxy servers before settling on a location less than two miles away: a luxury high-rise apartment complex in the downtown financial district.

The screen refreshed, displaying the registered account holder of the IP address:

Julian Vance.

"General Marcus Vance's youngest son," Ethan whispered, his eyes turning cold. "The brother."
