Chapter 4 - The Dominoes Fall

The boardroom devolved into chaotic pandemonium.
Marcus made a desperate lunge toward the private executive exit behind Evelyn’s chair, but the door flew open before he could touch the handle. Two towering men in slate-grey overcoats stepped inside, blocking the threshold with immovable presence. Behind them stood Lead Investigator Thomas Ward of the New York State Police Major Crimes Unit, accompanied by three uniformed troopers.
"Marcus Whitmore, Evelyn Whitmore, Nina Whitmore-Sterling," Investigator Ward announced in a flat, gravelly tone, brandishing signed warrants. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit fraud, and interstate financial embezzlement."
"Attempted murder?!" Nina shrieked, her voice pitching into hysterical tears. "I didn't try to kill anyone! It was Mom! Mom told Marcus to leave her outside! I just held her coat!"
"Shut up, Nina!" Evelyn snarled, her aristocratic facade crumbling into raw venom. She glared across the table at Claire, her eyes blazing with hatred. "You ungrateful little wretch! Everything I built, everything your father built, was for the Whitmore name! You married a gutter thug, and now you drag our family through the mud for a few bruises?!"
Claire didn't flinch. She sat tall, her chin raised, looking at the woman who had birthed her without a flicker of remorse. "Those bruises were your choice, Mother. Dad knew you had hollowed out the resort company. He knew you were planning to sell the northern ski lodges to offshore cartels. He gave me the controlling shares not to spite you, but to protect the thousands of workers whose livelihoods you gambled away."
Marcus fell to his knees as handcuffs were clicked around his wrists. "Claire, please! Talk to him! Tell Daniel to call off his people! I have debts... the people in Montreal, they’ll kill me if the funds are frozen!"
I walked around the table, stopping just inches from Marcus. I crouched down to his eye level. The smell of expensive cologne and sour fear rolled off him.
"The syndicate in Montreal answered to my logistics network until three months ago," I said in a whisper that only he could hear. "When they learn you tried to murder the wife of the Ghost King, prison will be the safest place on earth for you, Marcus. Pray that Investigator Ward never lets you out on bail."
Marcus let out a pathetic whimper, his face turning the color of chalk.
Troopers escorted Marcus and Nina out through the double doors, where flashbulbs immediately began flashing. Lena had ensured that every major media outlet in upstate New York was gathered in the lobby, tipped off to an explosive corporate takedown.
Evelyn resisted as an officer approached her with cuffs. "Take your hands off me! I demand my lawyer! I have political connections in Albany that will have your badges by noon!"
"Your personal attorney, Mr. Harrison, was disbarred two hours ago for submitting forged title deeds," Lena Ortiz said, showing a court order on her tablet. "Furthermore, the state attorney general has frozen all personal and joint accounts tied to the Whitmore estate. You have no retainer, Mrs. Whitmore. You will be assigned a public defender."
Evelyn turned her burning gaze onto me. "You think you've won, boy? You're a criminal playing at being a businessman. The federal government will tear you apart the moment they finish with us!"
"The federal government signed a full executive pardon for Daniel Vale six months ago," Lena stated coolly. "His intelligence cooperation helped dismantle four human trafficking rings and seized eighty million dollars in cartel assets. He is fully indemnified. You, however, are facing a minimum of twenty-five years."
As Evelyn was marched out in steel cuffs, her heels clicking an undignified retreat down the corridor, the boardroom fell into an absolute, stunned silence.
The remaining board members sat frozen, terrified to look in my direction.
Robert Vance cleared his throat, his hands trembling as he adjusted his glasses. "Claire... Mrs. Vale. On behalf of the board... we had no idea Arthur was under such pressure, nor did we know the extent of Evelyn's deception. What are your intentions for the company?"
Claire stood up, leaning lightly against my shoulder for support. The physical toll of the previous night was evident, but her aura was commanding.
"The resort will undergo a full forensic audit," Claire announced. "We will terminate every shell contract tied to Northstar Consulting. The twelve million dollars stolen by my brother will be recovered through insurance and asset liquidation. And effective immediately, my husband will act as chief strategic advisor."

She looked at me, a soft, knowing warmth returning to her eyes. "Let's go home, Daniel."
I wrapped my arm gently around her waist, shielding her bruised ribs. "Let's go home."
