Chapter 14 - The Ambush at High Ridge

Christian Vance broke through the side terrace doors, panicked and desperate, with Henri Laurent trailing close behind. They sprinted into the freezing autumn mist toward a waiting black SUV parked along the service trail behind High Ridge—the highest, most isolated scenic overlook on Whitmore Mountain.
Inside the command vehicle, Christian slammed the door and grabbed his satellite radio, his hands trembling violently.
"Bravo team, execute emergency extraction! Detonate the transformer substation at the lower resort! We need a blackout now!" Christian roared into the receiver.
Static hissed through the speaker. Then, a voice broke through the channel—calm, deep, and chillingly familiar.
"Bravo team has been relieved of duty, Christian."
Christian dropped the radio onto the floorboards as if it were white-hot iron. He looked out through the fogged windshield. Standing fifty yards up the dirt road, illuminated only by the SUV's headlights, were two figures standing side by side in the swirling mountain mist: myself and Claire.
Beside Christian, Henri Laurent pulled a suppressed automatic pistol from under his coat, his eyes narrowing with lethal malice. "I don't care about the money anymore. Moreau spent five years in a cell because of that ghost. I will take his head back to Marseilles."
"Kill him!" Christian screamed, his sanity snapping under the weight of complete failure. "Kill both of them!"
Laurent kicked the SUV door open, rolling out onto the wet gravel and raising his weapon toward us. Behind him, two surviving mercenary guards leaped from the rear doors, spreading out into tactical flanking positions along the rocky embankment.
Laurent fired three rapid shots.
The rounds cracked through the autumn air, but neither Claire nor I moved. The bullets struck with loud metallic clangs against the deployable ballistic shield that my team had raised from the hidden perimeter trench along the ridge.
Before Laurent could adjust his aim, the surrounding tree line erupted with blinding tactical floodlights. Four Apex Shield sniper teams, stationed in the high pines, illuminated the entire clearing in inescapable, diamond-bright luminescence.
"Drop your weapons!" Investigator Ward’s voice boomed through an external loudspeaker mounted on a state police interceptor that blocked the lower road. "Essex County Police and Federal Marshals! You are surrounded!"
Laurent snarled, refusing to surrender. He spun toward Claire, attempting to use her as a human shield.
He never made it two steps.
I vaulted over the low stone parapet, closing the distance in less than two seconds. Before Laurent could bring his pistol to bear, I kicked his wrist upward, sending the gun flying into the darkness over the cliff. In the same fluid motion, I drove an open palm strike into his chest, shattering his momentum and driving him hard onto his back against the freezing mud.
I planted my boot firmly across Laurent's sternum, looking down into his wide, gasping eyes.
"Tell Moreau when you see him in federal prison," I whispered, the crowned wraith symbol catching the tactical lights as my collar shifted, "that the Ghost King never forgives a threat against his home."
Behind us, Christian Vance tried to scramble up the rocky incline toward the woods, slipping on wet pine needles and sobbing in terror.
Claire walked up the path, completely unbothered by the chaos around her. She stood atop the rocky ledge, looking down at Christian as he collapsed at her feet, covered in mud, breathless and utterly ruined.
"Please, Claire!" Christian begged, clutching his bruised knees. "I was desperate! Helios was going to kill me if I didn't deliver Arthur’s patents! My father... think of my father! Robert is your family’s oldest friend!"
Claire looked down at him with a mixture of profound pity and absolute disgust.
"Robert Vance is a man of honor who gave fifty years of his life to this mountain," Claire said, her voice cutting through the cold wind with razor precision. "You are an insult to his name. You gambled with criminals, tried to poison innocent people, and threatened my daughter."
Investigator Ward stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Christian's wrists and pulling him roughly to his feet.
"Christian Vance, you are under arrest for attempted domestic terrorism, corporate extortion, conspiracy to commit murder, and violation of federal racketeering statutes," Ward stated, reading him his rights as the troopers dragged him toward the interceptor.
As the police cruisers’ flashing red and blue lights painted the autumn mist in vibrant hues, Claire walked over to me. She wrapped her coat tightly around herself, exhaling a long, steady breath into the crisp mountain air.
"Is it over?" she asked softly.
May you like
I reached out, pulling her close against my chest, feeling the fierce, steady beat of her heart against mine.
"It's over, my love," I replied, kissing her temple. "The last shadow has been broken."
