Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

Z
The top-floor boardroom of Whitmore Alpine Holdings in downtown Lake Placid smelled of expensive mahogany polish, aged scotch, and naked ambition. At 9:00 a.m., the heavy velvet curtains framed panoramic views of the frozen lake, but the atmosphere inside the room was suffocating.
Evelyn Whitmore sat at the head of the twenty-seat conference table, wearing an immaculate black mourning dress with pearl earrings. Her posture was regal, her makeup pristine, completely erasing any trace of the monster who had beaten her own daughter twelve hours earlier. To her left sat Nina, scrolling through her phone with smug satisfaction, while Marcus nervously adjusted his silk tie on her right.
Around them sat the six primary shareholders and board members, looking uneasy.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Evelyn began, dabbing at her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief. "As you know, my late husband Arthur’s passing left our family in profound grief. Unfortunately, Claire has taken it the hardest. Last night, she suffered a severe psychological episode at the family estate. She became violent, intoxicated, and walked into the blizzard without proper clothing."
A collective murmur of dismay rippled across the table.
"Is she hospitalized?" asked Robert Vance, the oldest shareholder and a lifelong friend of Claire's father. "Should we not wait for her recovery before discussing corporate restructuring?"
"Claire is medically incapacitated, Robert," Marcus chimed in smoothly, sliding a stack of prepared documents across the polished wood. "The doctors say she may require weeks of psychiatric rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the resort chain faces critical debt refinancing by the end of the quarter. Arthur’s draft will mistakenly allocated forty percent voting shares to Claire. Under Section 14 of our corporate bylaws, in the event of an heir's mental incapacity, power of attorney reverts to the surviving matriarch."
Nina leaned forward, offering a sympathetic smile. "We simply want to protect Dad's life's work. Claire cannot handle the pressure. Her husband, Daniel—well, he's just a simple warehouse dispatcher. He has no business acumen. Leaving the company in their hands would invite bankruptcy."
"I see," Robert murmured, flipping through the medical declaration Marcus had provided. "And the attending physician signed this?"
"Signed and notarized this morning," Evelyn lied without flinching. "All that remains is for the board to ratify the emergency transfer of Arthur's shares to Marcus and myself. Let us vote."
"Before you raise your hands," a low, resonant voice echoed from the heavy double doors at the back of the room, "perhaps the board would like to review the original medical report."
The room snapped to attention.
Evelyn’s head jerked up, her eyes widening in disbelief as the doors swung wide. Claire walked into the boardroom, clad in an elegant tailored winter coat of ivory wool. Her face was pale, and the dark bruise along her jaw was deliberately uncovered, standing out in stark contrast against her skin.
Walking half a step behind her was not the meek, quiet husband they expected, but a figure of commanding authority. I wore a bespoke charcoal suit, my posture rigid, accompanied by Lena Ortiz and three impeccably dressed men carrying aluminum briefcases.
"Claire!" Evelyn gasped, rising to her feet, her voice trembling between outrage and panic. "What are you doing out of bed? You are delusional, darling—"
"Sit down, Mother," Claire said coldly, her voice ringing clear across the silent room.
Marcus sprang up, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Security! Get this man out of here! He's trespassing!"
"Security answers to the building owner, Mr. Whitmore," Lena Ortiz stated calmly, opening her briefcase and laying a thick stack of certified documents in front of Robert Vance. "As of 6:00 a.m. this morning, Apex Real Estate Holdings acquired the primary mortgage and physical deed to the Whitmore Tower. Apex is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ghost King Trust. Mr. Daniel Vale is the sole trustee."
The name hit the room like a sonic shockwave. The older board members blanched.
"Ghost King...?" Robert whispered, staring at me in utter terror. In high-finance circles, that name was a terrifying legend—an untouchable international syndicate boss who controlled European shipping routes, offshore liquidity networks, and private intelligence agencies.
"That's impossible!" Nina shrieked, slamming her phone on the table. "Daniel carries cargo pallets in Albany! He's a nobody!"
I stepped forward, pulling a chair out for Claire at the opposite end of the long table. Once she was seated, I placed both hands on the back of her chair, looking directly into Evelyn’s frozen eyes.
"For four years, I carried boxes because my wife valued a peaceful, honest life," I said, my voice steady, ice-cold, and lethal. "I let you mock my clothes. I let you insult my background. I even let you pay for dinner when you wanted to feel superior. But last night, you struck my wife across the face with your ring and left her to die in sub-zero snow."
I signaled to Lena. The giant projector screen behind Evelyn flickered to life.
High-definition surveillance footage appeared on the wall. It showed the frozen lawn behind the greenhouse at 2:45 a.m. Evelyn’s face was unmistakable as she struck Claire with the leather folder. Nina could be seen pinning Claire’s arms, while Marcus disabled the perimeter floodlights.
The board members gasped in sheer horror. Robert Vance pushed his chair back in disgust.
"You forged the medical report," Claire declared, looking at Marcus. "You embezzled twelve million dollars through Northstar Consulting over the last three years to cover your gambling debts in Montreal. And you thought if I froze to death, Dad’s legacy would belong to you."

Evelyn’s aristocratic composure fractured completely. "This is a setup! That footage is fabricated!"
"The footage is verified by the New York State Police digital forensics unit," Lena answered smoothly. "And outside this boardroom, two squads of state investigators and federal financial agents are waiting with warrants for your arrest."
