Chapter 13 - Poison in the Well

Z

By the following evening, the grand ballroom of the Arthur Whitmore Memorial Lodge was alive with the hum of high society. Crystal chandeliers suspended from vaulted cedar beams cast a warm, glittering glow over three hundred international delegates dressed in black tie and evening gowns. Classical strings echoed from the mezzanine, mingling with the clink of champagne flutes and polite laughter.

Yet beneath the polished surface, an invisible war was already underway.

Disguised as executive security, eight of my top Apex Shield operatives were blended seamlessly into the crowd, their earpieces linked to Lena’s surveillance hub in the basement. Every server, bartender, and valet had been vetted through facial-recognition algorithms cross-referenced against Interpol databases.

Claire looked breathtaking in an emerald-green silk gown with an understated diamond pendant at her throat. She moved among the foreign ambassadors and corporate chairmen with effortless poise, projecting total command and grace.

Standing near the perimeter bar, I kept my eyes scanning the room, my suit jacket slightly unbuttoned to allow immediate draw access.

"Target has entered the foyer," Lena’s voice crackled through my micro-earpiece. "Christian Vance. He’s accompanied by four security contractors. Facial recognition confirms his lead man is Henri Laurent—Moreau’s chief enforcer out of Marseilles."

A moment later, the double entrance doors parted. Christian Vance walked in as if he owned the mountain. He was thirty-eight, handsome in a sharp, predatory way, dressed in an Italian tuxedo with his hair slicked back. His cold gray eyes immediately swept the ballroom, locking onto Claire with a smirk of undisguised arrogance.

Christian walked straight toward Claire, picking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray.

"Claire, darling," Christian drawled, his voice carrying just enough volume to draw the attention of nearby dignitaries. "Look at what you’ve done with Arthur's old lodge. It almost makes one forget the scandalous little bloodbath your mother orchestrated in this town."

Claire didn't flinch. She turned to face him, her expression serenely untouchable. "Christian. I see you’ve managed to secure an invitation despite your disreputable standing on Wall Street. How fortunate that our guest list is open to those seeking redemption."

Christian’s smirk tightened. He leaned in closer, dropping his voice to a menacing whisper. "Don't play the high-and-mighty CEO with me, Claire. In forty-five minutes, Helios Capital will execute a margin call on Whitmore Alpine's short bonds across the Frankfurt and London exchanges. Simultaneously, a severe health and safety contamination report will hit the Department of Agriculture—tainted water lines in the summit kitchen. Your stock will crater thirty percent before breakfast."

"Is that your grand masterstroke?" Claire asked, raising an eyebrow with calm indifference. "Manufacturing a phantom health panic and orchestrating illegal bond market manipulation?"

"That's just the appetizer," Christian sneered, his eyes darting to Henri Laurent, who stood by the mezzanine archway. "The main course is your husband's past. I know about the Rotterdam shipments, Claire. I know Daniel is the Ghost King. When the press receives the dossier linking this resort to international shadow networks, Arthur's precious sanctuary will be raided by federal marshals. You will lose the resort, the house, and your daughter’s custody to state protection."

At the mention of Maya, the air between them dropped twenty degrees.

I stepped up behind Claire, placing a gentle hand on the small of her back. The physical proximity caused Christian's smug smile to falter slightly as he looked into my eyes—eyes devoid of anger, holding only the chilling stillness of an executioner awaiting the clock.

"You speak very freely for a man whose offshore accounts were seized thirty minutes ago, Mr. Vance," I said in a low, measured voice.

Christian’s face went rigid. "What did you say?"

"Your shell corporation in Marseilles was raided by the French National Police at 2:00 p.m. European time," Lena’s voice sounded smoothly as she stepped up beside us, showing Christian a live decrypted wire report on her phone. "Henri Laurent's extradition warrant for armed extortion was signed an hour ago. And the water filtration tanks your men tried to tamper with? They were swapped with closed-loop Apex surveillance traps at dawn."

Christian’s face drained of color as he realized every move he had planned had been anticipated, contained, and weaponized against him.

"You think you’re so clever, Vale," Christian hissed, backing away as two plainclothes state troopers moved into position behind him. "This isn't over. My men outside have the perimeter surrounded!"

"Your men outside are already in zip-ties, Christian," Claire said coldly. "Now leave my ballroom before I have you carried out like the trash you are."
