Chapter 12 - Whispers from the Atlantic

The summer warmth over Lake Placid had begun to yield to the crisp, amber breath of autumn. Red and golden leaves drifted across the manicured lawns of the Arthur Whitmore Memorial Lodge, where the global tourism and sustainable hospitality summit was scheduled to convene in less than forty-eight hours. Over two hundred international executives, state dignitaries, and media syndicates had booked out the resort’s premier suites.

Claire sat at her mahogany desk in the summit command center, her tablet flashing with endless logistical approvals. Beside her, four-year-old Maya was happily building a miniature wooden cabin on the sheepskin rug with her nanny nearby.

The heavy door clicked open. Lena Ortiz stepped inside, her usual confident demeanor replaced by a rigid, guarded stillness that instantly set off alarms in my mind.

I set down my coffee and stood up from the lounge sofa. "Lena. What happened?"

Lena didn't speak until she had closed the double oak doors, drawn the sheer blinds, and placed an acoustic scrambler on the glass coffee table. She tapped her tablet, bringing up an intercepted wire transfer and a series of maritime vessel manifests originating from the Port of Rotterdam.

"Christian Vance is back in New York," Lena said in a hushed, grave tone.

Claire looked up from her documents, her brow knitting. "Robert Vance’s son? The one Dad fired five years ago for orchestrating illegal derivatives trading?"

"He didn't just come back to trade derivatives, Claire," Lena replied, sliding the tablet toward us. "Three weeks ago, Christian acquired a forty-percent stake in Helios Global Capital, an offshore hedge fund registered in the Cayman Islands. But our financial forensics at Apex Shield dug deeper. Helios is funded by dirty capital tied to the Moreau cartel in Marseilles—the very syndicate Daniel dismantled under his federal cooperation agreement six years ago."

The name hit the room with the chill of an open freezer. Julian Moreau had spent five years in a French maximum-security prison because of the intelligence manifests I provided to Interpol. If Moreau's surviving lieutenants had partnered with Christian Vance, this was not a standard corporate takeover. This was an orchestrated vendetta.

"Christian holds fifteen percent of the non-voting legacy bonds Arthur issued a decade ago," Claire murmured, analyzing the financial flow. "He’s using Helios to short our public debt ahead of the summit. If he manufactures a crisis during the international conference, he could trigger a mandatory debt restructuring and force a hostile receivership."

"He's aiming for more than debt restructuring," I said, my voice sinking into the deadly quiet that belonged to the Ghost King. "Look at the logistics charter. Christian didn't just buy financial bonds; he hired Vanguard Tactical, a rogue private military outfit operating out of Montreal. He has six unmarked vans registered in upstate New York under shell logistics names."

Claire's hand instinctively went to her throat. She looked across the room at Maya, who was laughing as she stacked another wooden block.

"They want to strike during the summit gala," Claire whispered, her voice tightening with protective fury. "They think with hundreds of high-profile guests in the building, we’ll be paralyzed. They think they can force us to sign over the northern patents and the resort deed to avoid a scandal."

I walked over to Claire, placing my hands on her shoulders. Her pulse was steady, her jaw set with that same unyielding steel she had shown when facing down Evelyn and Marcus in the boardroom.

"We are not the people they met four years ago," I told her, looking into her clear blue eyes. "They think they are hunting a former ghost and a defenseless heiress. They don't know that every inch of this mountain was built to protect what we love."

I looked at Lena. "Activate Apex Shield’s Tier-One tactical unit. Seal the mountain access roads with discrete checkpoints. And coordinate with Investigator Ward’s special task force. We don't cancel the summit, and we don't cower behind closed doors."

Claire stood up, stepping into my embrace. Her voice was pure iron wrapped in silk. "Let Christian Vance bring his mercenaries to my mountain, Daniel. Let’s show him what happens when wolves try to trespass in a dragon’s den."
