Zero nine

Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

After dinner, Owen insisted they leave early, citing a headache. The departure was tense, with Claire barely able to look me in the eye as she muttered her goodbyes.

As soon as the door closed behind them, Damon turned to me, his expression a mix of anger and anxiety.

"Nora, what was that about at dinner?" he demanded, his voice tight. "You were being incredibly passive-aggressive to Claire. She’s your best friend."

"Passive-aggressive?" I asked, looking up from clearing the plates. "I was just paying her compliments, Damon. Is there some reason a discussion about her jewelry or lingerie should make you nervous?"

"Of course not!" Damon snapped. "But you made things incredibly awkward for Owen. You know they've been having communication issues."

"Yes," I said, walking into the kitchen. "I do know. In fact, I think Owen is finally starting to see the truth."

"What truth?" Damon followed me, his eyes searching my face.

"The truth about his relationship," I said, turning to face him. I smiled—a cold, empty smile that finally made him freeze. "Don't worry about it, honey. Go to bed. I have some cleaning up to do."

He hesitated, but the exhaustion and the fear of pushing me too far made him back down. "Fine. Don't stay up too late."

Once he was upstairs, I closed the kitchen doors and opened my laptop.

I had received an email from Marcus.

Marcus: The funds have been secured. The temporary restraining and asset-freeze order has been signed by the judge, effective Monday morning at 8:00 AM. We have also subpoenaed the hotel records and the secret bank account.

I smiled. My lawyer, a brilliant family-law attorney named Sarah Jenkins, had worked miracles. Because of the clear evidence of financial dissipation—Damon transferring marital funds to a secret account with another woman—the judge had granted an emergency freeze on all of Damon's personal and joint accounts.

Furthermore, Sarah had drafted the divorce petition. It cited irreconcilable differences, but the attached evidence exhibit was a weapon of mass destruction.

On Monday morning, Damon’s world was going to shatter.

But I wasn't done yet.

I opened my email and drafted a message to Owen. I attached the video file from the master bedroom camera—the one showing Damon and Claire together, specifically the segment where they discussed using Owen and stealing my money.

I didn't send it yet. I scheduled it to be sent on Monday morning at precisely 8:01 AM.

I wanted them all to experience the same sudden, blinding drop into the abyss that I had experienced on the day of my ultrasound.

I walked up to the nursery. I sat in the rocking chair, looking at the empty crib.

"Almost there, my love," I whispered, rubbing my belly. "Just two more days."
