Chapter 14 - The Deposition of Truth

The legal conference room was cold, the long glass table reflecting the gray afternoon sky outside. I sat next to Sarah, my posture rigid, my arms crossed. Across from us sat Damon and his attorney, a sharp-featured man named Mr. Vance (no relation to Marcus).
Damon looked nervous, his hands gripping a yellow legal pad. He still thought this was a standard visitation dispute. He still thought he could play the victimized father.
"Mr. Harrison," Sarah began, leaning forward and opening a manila folder. "We are here to discuss your motion for unsupervised visitation of Clara Harrison. My client is prepared to fight this motion with everything at her disposal."
Mr. Vance smiled condescendingly. "Ms. Jenkins, your client’s personal feelings about the dissolution of the marriage are understandable, but they do not dictate family law. My client has a right to build a relationship with his daughter outside the presence of a social worker."
"He had a right to be a father," I spoke up, my voice cutting through the room like a blade. "Until he decided to steal from her."
"Mrs. Harrison—excuse me, Ms. Vance—we’ve already settled the financial aspects of the divorce," Mr. Vance said smoothly. "The court handled the asset distribution."
"Not all of the assets," Sarah countered. She pulled out a stack of photocopied pages from Claire’s journal, along with several newly subpoenaed bank records Marcus had verified over the weekend. "We have recently come into possession of evidence showing that Mr. Harrison began concealing marital assets as early as two years ago—long before the affair with Ms. Sterling began."
Damon’s attorney frowned, looking at the papers Sarah slid across the table. Damon reached out, picking up a page. As his eyes scanned the text, his face underwent a terrifying transformation. His jaw dropped, and the skin around his eyes tightened in sheer panic.
"This... this is Claire’s handwriting," Damon whispered, his voice trembling.
"Yes," Sarah said. "Ms. Sterling has provided a comprehensive timeline of your financial maneuvers. It appears you established an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Aegis Holdings' in 2024. You transferred over two hundred thousand dollars of marital funds into that account, using Ms. Sterling's identification without her full knowledge to shield yourself."
Damon slammed his hand on the table, standing up. "She’s lying! She’s crazy! She’s doing this to get back at me because I wouldn't marry her after the affair came out!"
"Sit down, Damon," Mr. Vance ordered, his voice suddenly sharp as he grabbed his client’s arm. He turned back to Sarah, his demeanor completely changed. "Ms. Jenkins, if these allegations are true... this goes beyond family court. This is a matter of criminal fraud."
"Exactly," Sarah said calmly. "We are prepared to hand this entire file over to the District Attorney’s office for review. However, my client is willing to offer a settlement."
Damon sat down, looking defeated, his eyes hollow. "What do you want, Nora?"
I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger, no satisfaction. Just the clinical necessity of protecting my child.
"You will sign a full, irrevocable termination of your parental rights," I said slowly. "You will surrender any claim to Clara. You will never see her, never contact her, and never attempt to be a part of her life again. In exchange, I will lock this file in a vault and ensure the District Attorney never sees it."

Damon stared at me, his lips trembling. "You're... you're taking my daughter away from me forever."
"No," I replied, leaning forward. "You gave her up the moment you decided to use her future as a bargaining chip for your greed. Sign the papers, Damon. Or go to prison."
