Chapter 3 - The Master of Puppets

The next morning, the sun broke through the curtains of the guest bedroom, casting long, golden fingers across the floor. I lay awake, staring at the ceiling. I hadn't slept more than two hours. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the closet door, open an inch, and the pale hand gripping my cream coat.
I checked my phone. Marcus had already sent the encrypted link.
I uploaded the photograph I had taken of the champagne camisole under our bed, alongside a screenshot of the security system’s access logs showing Claire’s emergency code usage.
A few minutes later, my phone vibrated. A text from Claire.
Claire: Morning, babe! How did the doctor go yesterday? So sorry I missed your call, Owen dragged me out to look at caterers. I'm dying to see the new ultrasound pics! Lunch today?
The sheer audacity of her text made me laugh aloud—a dry, humorless sound that died quickly in the quiet room. She had been hiding in my closet, smelling my clothes, while my husband stood shirtless feet away, and now she was asking for lunch to see the baby she was supposed to godparent.
I took a deep breath, typing back with steady thumbs.
Nora: I'd love to! The baby is doing great. Let's do that cute Italian place downtown at 1:00 PM. I have so much to tell you.
Claire: Perfect! Can't wait. See you there, mama! 💖
"Mama." The word felt like a slap.
I stood up, showered, and dressed with meticulous care. I chose a maternity dress in a soft forest green—a color Damon always said made my eyes look striking. I applied my makeup with precision, concealing the dark circles under my eyes. When I looked in the mirror, I didn't see a victim. I saw a hunter.
When I went downstairs, Damon was already gone for work. He had left a note on the kitchen island next to a plate of sliced strawberries.
Have a great day, beautiful. Call me if you need anything. Love, D.
I picked up the note, folded it neatly, and placed it in a ziplock bag. I would keep every piece of paper, every scrap of writing.
At 12:45 PM, I arrived at the restaurant. It was a high-end bistro with outdoor seating and heavy velvet booths inside. I had requested a booth in the back corner—private, quiet, and perfect for recording.
Before Claire arrived, I set my phone face down on the table. I had activated a voice-recording app that saved files directly to my secure cloud drive.
At precisely 1:00 PM, the brass bell above the door chimed, and Claire walked in.
She looked radiant. Her blonde hair was swept up in a chic, effortless clip, and she wore a tailored beige trench coat over a white silk blouse. On her left hand, the massive princess-cut diamond Owen had bought her caught the restaurant’s low lighting.
"Nora!" she squealed, rushing over and throwing her arms around me.
The scent of her perfume—the same jasmine and amber—washed over me. My stomach recoiled, but I hugged her back, burying my face in her shoulder.
"Claire," I murmured. "It's so good to see you."
"Oh, look at you!" she said, pulling back to look at my belly. She gently placed her hand right over my stomach. "You're glowing! How is my little goddaughter doing?"
"She's growing fast," I said, sliding into the booth. "She's already kicking. Do you want to see the ultrasound?"
"Are you kidding? Yes!"
I pulled out my phone, navigating to the photo of the ultrasound, making sure to swipe past the hidden folder containing the photo of her camisole. I handed her the phone.
Claire gasped, her eyes crinkling with what looked like genuine affection. "Oh, Nora... look at her nose! She's beautiful. She looks just like you."
"Do you think so?" I asked, watching her face closely. "Damon thinks she has his jaw."
"Maybe a little," Claire said, her smile faltering for a fraction of a microsecond before returning to full force. "But definitely your eyes and nose. Oh, I can't wait for her to be here. Have you guys finished the nursery?"
"Almost," I said, taking a sip of my lemon water. "We're still working on the crib. Damon's been so busy with work lately. He's been putting in a lot of overtime at the firm."
"Well, he's working hard for his family," Claire said smoothly, her eyes dipping to her menu. "He's a good provider, Nora. You're lucky."
"I am," I agreed. "And what about Owen? How is the wedding planning going? You must be exhausted."
Claire sighed, a dramatic, theatrical sound. "Ugh, don't get me started. Owen is so stressed about the budget. He keeps complaining about the cost of the florist. I swear, sometimes I feel like he doesn't even want this wedding."
"Really?" I leaned in, playing the sympathetic best friend. "That's terrible, Claire. Owen seemed so in love with you."
"Oh, he is, he is," she said quickly, perhaps realizing she had gone too far. "It's just... marriage is a big step, you know? Sometimes I wonder if we rushed into it."
Or perhaps you're wondering if you can replace me and have Damon instead, I thought.
Our food arrived—a light salad for me, pasta for her. As we ate, I kept the conversation flowing, guiding it gently down a path I had carefully planned.
"You know, Claire," I said, setting my fork down. "I was thinking about your wedding gift. I want to do something really special for you and Owen. What about that honeymoon in Tahiti? Have you booked the resort yet?"
Claire’s eyes lit up. "Oh, we looked at the St. Regis, but it's just so expensive. Owen said we might have to settle for Hawaii."
"Nonsense," I said, leaning forward and placing my hand over hers. "You're my best friend. If you want the St. Regis, you should have it. Actually, Damon mentioned he had some corporate points we could transfer to you. Or maybe we could just help cover the deposit."
Claire’s hand twitched beneath mine. "Oh, Nora... that's too much. We couldn't possibly accept that."
"We're family, Claire," I said softly, staring directly into her eyes. "After all, you're going to be my daughter's godmother. There is nothing I wouldn't do for you."
For the first time during the lunch, Claire looked genuinely uncomfortable. A faint flush crept up her neck, disappearing into her collar. She took a quick sip of her wine.
"You're too sweet, Nora. Really."
As she looked away, my phone in my lap buzzed. It was a private message from Marcus.
Marcus: We have a tail on Damon. He just entered a jewelry store downtown. He's purchasing something. Will update with details.
My heart hammered against my ribs. A jewelry store.
May you like
"Is everything okay?" Claire asked, noticing my momentary distraction.
"Just a work email," I lied, smiling warmly. "Now, tell me more about the bridesmaid dresses. Have you decided on the color?"
