Chapter 28 - A Brother's Guard

Leo was five now, a boisterous, energetic little boy who worshipped the ground his big sister walked on. He followed Clara everywhere, trying to copy her drawings and mimic her laugh.
One afternoon, while they were playing in the backyard, I watched them from the kitchen window.
Clara was trying to teach Leo how to ride his tricycle, patiently holding the handlebars as he pedaled furiously, his little face concentrated with effort.
"Go, Leo, go!" she cheered.
"I’m riding, Clara! I’m riding!" he squealed, his tiny legs moving in a blur.
Suddenly, the front wheel hit a stone, and the tricycle tipped over, sending Leo tumbling onto the soft grass. He let out a loud, dramatic wail.
Before I could even step out the back door, Clara was already by his side. She dropped to her knees, brushing the grass off his knees and wrapping her arms around him.
"It’s okay, Leo," she murmured, her voice sweet and soothing. "You're okay. You're a brave boy. Look, the tricycle isn't even broken."
Leo sniffled, wiping his nose on his sleeve, and looked up at his sister. "Am I brave?"
"The bravest," Clara smiled, kissing his cheek. "Come on, let's try again. I’ll hold onto the seat this time."
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my heart swelling with a profound sense of peace.

I had spent so many years worrying about the psychological impact of the betrayal on Clara. I had feared that the shadow of her biological father's actions would somehow find a way to darken her spirit.
But watching her now, so full of love, patience, and protective instinct for her younger brother, I knew she was going to be more than okay. She was growing up in a house filled with love, and that love was the ultimate shield against the past.
