Chapter 25 - A Circle of Light

The wedding day arrived, bringing with it a perfectly clear, late-summer sky. The air was warm, carrying the sweet scent of the ripening apples on our tree.

We had decorated the backyard with simple fairy lights strung through the branches of the apple tree. A small wooden arch, built by Owen’s own hands, stood at the end of a stone pathway.

My father had flown in from Florida, looking frail but incredibly proud in his tailored charcoal suit. He stood by the back door, tears in his eyes as he saw me in my wedding dress—a simple, elegant white silk gown that fell softly over my curves.

"You look just like your mother, Nora," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "She would have been so proud of the woman you’ve become."

"Thanks, Dad," I said, hugging him tightly.

At 5:00 PM, the music began—a soft, acoustic guitar melody playing from a small speaker.

Clara walked down the pathway first, wearing a yellow sundress and dropping flower petals from a woven basket. Leo followed, holding Owen’s hand, his little toddler steps keeping time with the music.

Then, it was my turn.

I took my father’s arm, and we walked out onto the lawn.

Owen stood beneath the arch, wearing a simple linen suit. When his eyes met mine, his entire face lit up with a warmth that seemed to banish every shadow that had ever existed in my life. He looked at me as if I were the only person in the universe.

We stood together under the apple tree, our children sitting on a blanket nearby, my father watching from the front row.

The vows we exchanged were not the standard, pre-written promises of a traditional ceremony. They were vows of survival, of partnership, and of deep, unshakeable respect.

"I promise to stand by you in the quiet," Owen said, his voice ringing clear in the still garden air. "To protect the peace we’ve built, and to love you more with every passing season."

"I promise to trust you," I replied, looking directly into his eyes. "To let go of the guard I built, and to walk beside you into whatever tomorrow brings."

When we kissed, the small gathering of friends let out a soft cheer. Clara ran over, throwing her arms around both of our legs, and Owen scooped her up, bringing her into our embrace.

We were no longer survivors of a tragedy. We were the authors of our own joy.
