Zero nine

Chapter 9 - Z

The penthouse suite at the Hotel Plaza Athénée offered a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower, shimmering beneath the night sky like a tower of gold. The cool Parisian air blew gently through the open balcony doors, carrying the sweet scent of fresh rain and roasted chestnuts from the streets below.

I sat on the velvet sofa, a cup of chamomile tea resting on the glass table in front of me. On the table lay a physical newspaper—the international edition of the Financial Times.

On page three was a small, inconspicuous article regarding the final asset liquidation of Apex Capital. The headline was simple: "APEX GLOBAL OFFICIALLY DISSOLVED FOLLOWING SEC FORFEITURE."

Below it was a small notice mentioning that former CEO Christopher Albright had officially withdrawn his bankruptcy contestations, forfeiting all remaining claims to any past marital or corporate property.

I closed the paper, feeling no sting, no sorrow, and no desire to look back.

My phone on the table lit up with a text message from Luke:

Board meeting concluded. Everything green across all sectors. Enjoy your evening, Chairwoman.

I smiled, typing a quick reply:

Proud of you, Vice Chairman. Get some sleep.

I stood up, walked out onto the balcony, and leaned against the wrought-iron railing. The Eiffel Tower burst into its hourly light show, thousands of white lights sparkling against the dark French sky.

For years, I had believed that love meant sacrifice, that keeping the peace meant enduring quietly, and that holding a family together required losing oneself in the process.

I was wrong.

True strength wasn't about enduring abuse with silent grace; it was about knowing your worth, protecting those who truly loved you, and striking back with unyielding force when pushed into a corner.

I took a deep breath of the crisp night air, feeling completely whole, completely free, and infinitely powerful.
