Chapter 8 - Z

The private terminal at JFK airport was quiet, illuminated by the soft golden glow of the late afternoon sun filtering through the floor-to-ceiling glass. Outside, the Gulfstream jet bearing the Grand Horizon emblem sat on the tarmac, its engines humming gently, prepared for the flight to Paris.
I wore a comfortable cashmere sweater and tailored cream trousers, a simple gold watch on my wrist—my mother's watch, which had been recovered from the safe after Brenda's arrest.
Luke walked beside me toward the boarding ramp, carrying a single leather duffel bag.

"Have a good trip, Mom," Luke said softly. "Turn off your phone. Don't check the financial news. Just... enjoy Paris."
I pulled him into a tight, warm hug. "Thank you, Luke. For everything. For reminding me who I was."
"You were always Lawrence Mendoza's daughter, Mom," Luke whispered back as we embraced. "You just forgot for a little while. I just held up the mirror."
We pulled back, and I smiled, turning to walk up the boarding stairs. As I reached the top, I turned back one last time. Luke stood on the tarmac, his hands in his pockets, watching me with absolute pride.

I stepped into the cabin, the heavy door sealing closed behind me.
The jet taxied down the runway, accelerated, and lifted smoothly into the clear blue sky, leaving New York and the ghosts of my past far behind.
