Zero nine

Chapter 5 - Z

The concrete walls of the Rikers Island visitor facility were cold, damp, and smelled faintly of bleach and industrial paint. Sitting across from me behind a scratched plexiglass partition was Brenda Vance.

Without her designer gowns, her diamond earrings, and her carefully styled hair, she looked extraordinarily small and hollow. She wore an oversized orange jumpsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, and dark circles shadowed her eyes.

When she saw me sit down, her lips curled into a bitter, resentful snarl.

"Came to gloat, Vivian?" Brenda’s voice came through the small iron intercom, raspy and thin. "Came to see the charity case back where she belongs?"

I picked up the phone receiver on my side. I was dressed in a tailored navy coat, completely composed. "I didn't come to gloat, Brenda. I came to give you your one and only chance at survival."

Brenda let out a harsh, barking laugh. "Survival? I'm facing twenty years for attempted murder and corporate fraud! Christopher threw me to the wolves the second the police showed up! And Julian Sterling won't even answer my lawyer's calls!"

"Because you were never an partner to Sterling," I said calmly. "You were an expendable asset. Now that you're caught, you're a liability."

Brenda clenched her fists against the metal table, her nails digging into her palms. "I gave him everything! I gave him Christopher’s access codes, the trading algorithms, the financial archives! He promised me twenty million dollars and a penthouse in Dubai once Grand Horizon collapsed!"

"And instead, he left you here to rot," I replied. "And do you know what Christopher is doing right now? He’s sitting in his Upper East Side brownstone, drinking fifty-year-old scotch, laying every ounce of blame on you to save his own skin. He told the prosecutor that you manipulated him, that you dosed his drinks too, and that he was an innocent victim of your scheme."

Brenda’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. "He... he said what?! It was his idea to use the sedatives! He said he couldn't stand looking at your quiet, perfect face anymore! He wanted you out of the way so he wouldn't feel like a pathetic leech in your father's company!"

The truth stung, but it didn't break me. I had already buried my feelings for Christopher in the ashes of the gala night.

"I have the power to reduce your charges, Brenda," I said, leaning closer to the glass. "Mr. Davis has spoken with the District Attorney. If you sign an affidavit declaring that Julian Sterling coerced you, paid you, and orchestrated the theft of Grand Horizon’s proprietary software, the DA will drop the attempted murder charge to conspiracy, and we will support a plea bargain for four years instead of twenty."

Brenda stared at me, her chest heaving. "Why would you help me? I tried to erase you, Vivian! I wore your dress, I slept with your husband, I tried to turn your mind to mush!"

"Because you are small, Brenda," I said, my voice devoid of emotion. "You are a fly caught in a web. My target isn't you. It's Julian Sterling. And I will burn his entire financial empire to the ground, with or without you. But signing this affidavit gives you a life when you walk out of here. Refuse, and you will spend the best years of your youth behind these bars while Sterling lives in luxury."

Silence stretched between us, punctuated only by the distant clanging of prison gates.

Brenda looked down at her shaking hands—the hands that had once worn my grandmother's gold. Tear tracks cut through the grime on her cheeks.

"Give me the paper," she whispered.

Thirty minutes later, I walked out of the prison complex into the cool afternoon air, holding the signed, notarized affidavit. Mr. Davis met me near the limousine, accepting the document with a satisfied nod.

"This is the silver bullet, Vivian," Davis said. "With this affidavit, we can petition the SEC to freeze Apex Global’s trading accounts immediately for corporate espionage."

"Not yet," I said, stepping into the back of the car where Luke was waiting with his tablet. "If we strike now, Sterling will use his political connections to stall the investigation. We need to destroy him on the open market first."

Luke smiled, a terrifyingly sharp expression. "The board meeting is in three hours, Mother. Sterling believes we're coming to sign the asset sale."

"Let him believe it," I said. "Is the trap set?"

"Apex Capital has shorted eighty million shares of Grand Horizon stock," Luke explained, displaying a live market order flow on his screen. "They are betting everything that we announce a bankruptcy filing or a fire-sale of our patents today at 4:00 PM. If we instead announce a major strategic partnership, the stock will skyrocket, triggering a massive short squeeze that will wipe out Apex’s liquidity within minutes."

"Who is the strategic partner?" I asked.

Luke tapped the screen, opening a signed contract with a familiar emblem at the top.

"Mendoza-Vanguard International," Luke said. "I secretly consolidated Grand Horizon's offshore venture arms with your father's old private trust fund yesterday. We just secured a three-billion-dollar credit facility from the Bank of Japan."

I looked at my son in sheer awe. "You brought your grandfather's trust back to life?"

"Grandfather built that fund for a rainy day," Luke said quietly. "I'd say a storm like Julian Sterling qualifies as a rainy day."

At 3:30 PM, I stepped into the grand conference room of the Manhattan Financial Center. Julian Sterling was already waiting, flanked by four senior attorneys and his chief financial officer. He sat at the head of the long glass table, sipping espresso, looking like a predator about to feast.

"You're twenty minutes late, Vivian," Sterling said, checking his watch. "I hope you brought the signed patent transfers. The market closes in thirty minutes, and if those documents aren't uploaded, I hit the execute button on your debt default."

I walked slowly to the opposite end of the table and sat down. Luke sat to my right, opening his laptop. Mr. Davis stood behind us, clutching his briefcase.

"I brought the paperwork, Julian," I said, sliding a manila envelope across the glass table.

Sterling chuckled, reaching for the envelope with greedy anticipation. "A wise decision. Your father was a fighter, but he knew when he was beaten. You have saved yourself a lot of pain—"

Sterling opened the envelope.

His laughter died instantly.

Inside was not the asset purchase agreement. Inside was a copy of Brenda Vance's signed confession, along with an official SEC freeze notice targeting Apex Capital’s primary clearing accounts.

Sterling’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson. He slammed his hand on the glass table. "What is the meaning of this childish game?!"

"The game is over, Julian," I said calmly.

Luke hit a key on his laptop. "Attention, Mr. Sterling. At precisely 3:32 PM, Grand Horizon Group issued a press release announcing a three-billion-dollar equity injection from Mendoza-Vanguard International. We have also announced a full patent defense lawsuit against Apex Capital for corporate espionage."

"You're lying!" Sterling screamed, turning to his CFO, whose phone was already ringing frantically. "Look at the stock! Check the market!"

The CFO answered his phone, listened for five seconds, and turned utterly white. "Mr. Sterling... Grand Horizon stock just jumped forty percent! Trading has been halted twice due to volatility!"

"Un-halt it!" Sterling roared, standing up, his cane clattering to the floor. "Cover our short positions! Buy back the shares!"

"You can't buy back the shares, Julian," Luke said, his voice dropping into an icy, devastating stillness. "Because my mother and I just bought up every available floating share on the open market using our new credit line. There are no shares left for you to cover. The short squeeze is absolute."

Sterling gasped, clutching his chest. "You... you little monster..."

"Your short losses currently stand at one point two billion dollars and counting," Luke continued smoothly. "Apex Capital is officially insolvent. And the SEC investigators are waiting in your lobby downstairs to serve warrants for corporate espionage, black market wire transfers, and evidence tampering."

Sterling collapsed back into his leather chair, staring at us in absolute terror. The formidable titan of Wall Street had been stripped naked, bankrupt, and utterly defeated in less than ten minutes.

I stood up, adjusting my jacket, and looked down at the man who had tried to erase my family.

"My father built this empire on honor, Julian," I said softly. "You tried to destroy it with poison and lies. Remember this face... because it’s the last thing you'll see before you spend the rest of your life in a federal cell."
