Zero nine

Chapter 2 - Z

“Never alone, Mother,” Luke replied, his tone chillingly serene. “I have truth on my side. And truth, in a room full of hypocrites, is the most lethal weapon there is.”

He stepped out of the luxury sedan into the flashing sea of paparazzi cameras, leaving me with Mr. Davis, who emerged from the shadows of the hotel's side entrance. The seasoned attorney held a leather briefcase with an iron grip. His eyes were hard, reflecting the legacy of my late father.

"Vivian," Mr. Davis whispered as he ushered me toward the service elevator. "Your father built Grand Horizon's legal framework like a fortress. Christopher thought he was marrying into wealth, but he was actually stepping into Lawrence Mendoza's cage. Tonight, we lock the door."

Inside the grand ballroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly opulent. The glitterati of New York, San Francisco, and London sip champagne while listening to the rhythmic cadence of the auctioneer’s gavel. Christopher stood beside Brenda on the grand podium, basking in the applause. He looked every bit the powerful CEO—handsome, silver-haired, impeccably groomed. Beside him, Brenda sparkled in my dress, my diamonds, and my stolen identity. She whispered something in his ear, and Christopher chuckled, resting his hand comfortably on the small of her back.

Then, the massive double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The room didn't fall silent immediately, but a ripple of murmurs started near the entrance and spread like a wildfire across the seventy tables. Luke walked down the red carpet with the unhurried grace of a king inspecting his domain. He didn't look like an eighteen-year-old boy; he carried the terrifying weight of an absolute ruler.

The auctioneer stumbled over his words. Christopher’s smile froze. Brenda’s hand tightened on Christopher’s arm, her knuckles turning white as she recognized the young man approaching the stage.

"Luke?" Christopher said, his voice amplified by the microphone clipped to his lapel. "What are you doing here? Where is your mother?"

Luke didn't answer right away. He stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at his father and the woman wearing his mother's stolen life. He pulled a small, sleek remote from his pocket and pressed a single button.

Behind the stage, the massive LED screen that had been displaying the Grand Horizon Group logo flashed, flickered, and suddenly changed.

The charity auction graphics vanished. In their place, a high-definition video began to play.

It was security footage from three hours ago inside my private dressing room.

The entire ballroom gasped. The screen clearly showed Brenda Vance slipping two crushed blue pills into a cup of steaming broth. It showed her waiting for the powder to dissolve, testing the temperature, and then walking toward my bedroom doors with a predatory smile.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Christopher shouted, his face turning beet red. "Turn that off! Security! Turn off the screen!"

"I wouldn't touch those cords if I were you," Luke said, his voice echoing through the ballroom speakers, having seamlessly hijacked the audio feed. "This stream is currently being broadcast live to over forty financial news networks, every shareholder in Grand Horizon, and the Securities and Exchange Commission."

Brenda’s face drained of all color. She dropped her glass of champagne; it shattered on the stage floor, spraying crystal and pale liquid over my champagne-colored gown.

"Christopher, he's lying! It's a setup!" Brenda shrieked, backing away. "Luke is mentally unstable, you know this! Vivian has been poisoning his mind against us!"

"Is she, Brenda?" Luke asked, his voice dripping with icy contempt. He pressed the remote again.

The audio recording played. Brenda’s voice boomed across the ballroom, clear, sharp, and unmistakably malicious: “How long does it take for a daily dose of liquid sedatives to cause irreversible cognitive decline? I need her incapable of signing a power of attorney within three months...”

A collective shockwave hit the room. Investors stood up from their tables. Board members stared in horror. High-society women covered their mouths, looking at Brenda not as a substitute socialite, but as a monster caught in the light.

"You venomous snake!" a voice called out from the VIP section. It was Mr. Garrison, the single largest institutional investor in Grand Horizon. He stood up, his face thunderous. "Christopher, what the hell is going on here?!"

Christopher looked around wildly. His empire, built on a foundation of meticulously crafted public relations and silent betrayal, was crumbling in front of two thousand high-net-worth individuals. "Garrison, please, this is a family matter—a misunderstanding—"

"It is not a family matter, Christopher," I said.

The heavy wooden doors on the side of the stage swung open.

I stepped onto the platform. I wore no diamonds. I wore no gown. In my sharp black suit, surrounded by the blinding lights of the stage, I stood tall, my eyes locked onto the man I had loved for twenty years.

The room gasped again. They looked from Brenda, wearing my stolen gown and drenched in stolen jewelry, to me—the real Vivian Albright, standing with absolute authority.

"Vivian..." Christopher swallowed hard, taking an involuntary step back. "You... you were sick..."

"I was poisoned, Christopher," I said, my voice steady, carrying over the silent room. "By the woman you brought to this gala. By the woman you allowed to wear my mother's gold, my grandmother's diamonds, and my name."

Brenda lunged forward, her hands clawing at the air, her face twisted in rage. "You ruined everything! You were supposed to be asleep! You were supposed to be helpless!"

Before she could reach me, two federal officers in plain clothes, accompanied by Mr. Davis, stepped onto the stage.

"Brenda Vance," the lead officer said, producing a warrant. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and attempted murder by administration of a controlled substance."

"No! Christopher, do something! Tell them!" Brenda screamed as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists—the wrist still bearing my grandmother’s gold bracelet. "Christopher, I did this for us! For Grand Horizon!"

Christopher didn't move a muscle. He looked at Brenda with disgust, instantly attempting to sever ties to save himself. "Take her away. I had no idea... I was manipulated..."

"Save your breath, Dad," Luke said, stepping onto the stage beside me. He handed a thick blue document to Mr. Davis. "Because you're next."

Christopher chuckled nervously, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Luke, son, don't do this. I am the CEO of Grand Horizon. You are my son. Whatever grievances your mother has, we can settle them in private."

"There is no private settlement for treason," I said, looking my husband in the eye. "And there is no Grand Horizon for you anymore."

Mr. Davis stepped forward, opening his briefcase and pulling out certified copies of the prenuptial agreement my father had drafted two decades ago.

"Mr. Christopher Albright," Davis announced in a loud, legally ringing voice. "Under Section 14, Clause B of the Mendoza-Albright Charter, any act of marital infidelity, corporate fraud, or conspiracy against the principal heir—Vivian Albright—triggers an immediate, non-negotiable forfeiture of all voting shares held by the offending spouse."

Christopher’s breath hitched. "That... that clause expired ten years ago!"

"It didn't," Davis replied with a cold smile. "Your late father-in-law added a perpetuity amendment that you signed during the 2018 corporate restructuring. Effective five minutes ago, when the SEC received proof of your co-conspiracy and infidelity, your thirty-eight percent stake in Grand Horizon Group was revoked and transferred directly to Vivian Albright and Luke Albright."

"What?!" Christopher roared, turning to the board members in the front row. "Garrison! Speak to them! You can't let a housewife and a teenager take control of a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate!"

Mr. Garrison slowly straightened his tuxedo jacket, looking at Christopher with profound disgust. "A housewife? Vivian’s father created this company, Christopher. You were just the manager. And given what we’ve all just witnessed... you are fired."

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Reporters scrambled to go live, flashbulbs blinded the stage, and security began pushing back the surging crowd.

Christopher fell to his knees on the very stage where he had intended to humiliate me. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of realization, desperation, and defeat.

"Vivian... please..." he choked out. "We built this..."

May you like

I leaned down slightly, looking into the eyes of the man who had let another woman poison me for greed.

"You built a house of cards, Christopher," I whispered. "And my son just blew it down."
