Chapter 4 - Uninvited Guests & Public Ambush

The Grand Hyatt Ballroom was packed with three hundred of San Diego's most influential media executives, venture capitalists, and literary agents for the annual Pacific Publishing Gala. Crystal chandeliers cast warm light over tables adorned with white orchids and silver champagne buckets. It was the premier networking event of the season—and Abigail Prescott was scheduled to receive the Executive Director of the Year award.

Dressed in a floor-length emerald green silk gown with a sharp, asymmetrical neckline, Abigail moved through the crowd with fluid grace. To the outside observer, she was the picture of unshakeable success. Beside her stood Sarah Lin, her sharp-witted corporate attorney, who was whispering updates under her breath.

"The criminal complaint was formally logged with the San Diego Police Department at four o'clock," Sarah murmured, taking a sip from her wine glass. "The freeze on Vanguard's operating accounts went through an hour later. Logan is officially broke, Abigail. His credit cards will bounce by midnight."

"Good," Abigail replied smoothly, greeting a passing board member with an effortless smile. "Has he tried to reach out to you?"

"Six times," Sarah chuckled coldly. "His lawyer—some bottom-tier public defender he scraped up—tried to propose an 'informal settlement.' They offered to drop all claims on your property if you agree not to press embezzlement charges."

"Tell them the only deal I’m offering is a guilty plea with five years probation," Abigail said, her eyes scanning the room out of habit.

Suddenly, a disturbance near the grand entrance caught the attention of the surrounding guests. The soft classical string quartet was overshadowed by loud, abrasive voices echoing from the marble foyer.

"I don't care about your guest list! My son's life is being destroyed by one of your directors! Step aside!"

Abigail’s blood ran cold, though her expression remained impeccably serene.

Bursting through the double wooden doors was Bernice Gable, wearing a garish, oversized sequence jacket over black trousers, her grey hair wildly unstyled. Flanking her was Logan, looking gaunt, disheveled, and pale in a suit that was visibly unpressed. Behind them, two frantic event security guards were attempting to restrain them without causing a physical scene.

The entire ballroom fell into a stunned silence. Heads turned, whispers exploded like wildfire across the tables, and several high-profile clients raised their phones.

Bernice spotted Abigail instantly. She raised a thick finger, pointing directly at the emerald-clad woman across the floor.

"There she is!" Bernice shrieked, her voice echoing loudly off the high ceilings. "Look at her! Sitting up there in her emerald dress while my son’s life burns to the ground! That woman is a monster!"

Logan tried to hold his mother back, but his effort was weak, half-hearted—he was clearly relying on her aggression to do his dirty work. "Mom, please—"

"No, Logan! People need to know who Abigail Prescott really is!" Bernice shouted, stomping directly down the central carpet toward the VIP head table. Guests recoiled, shifting their chairs back. "She used my son! She lured him into her life, forced him to work for her company for free, and when he refused to be her little puppet, she threw him out into the street! She froze his bank accounts! She’s trying to send an innocent young man to prison to cover up her own company's illegal bookkeeping!"

The charge sent a shockwave through the room. Board members from Apex Digital exchange shocked glances. The reputation of the company—and Abigail’s entire career—hung in the balance of a single, chaotic scene.

Sarah Lin made a movement to step forward, but Abigail raised a single hand, stopping her attorney in her tracks.

"Stay back, Sarah," Abigail murmured, her voice steady as iron. "This is what she wants. She wants a mud-wrestling match. I’m going to give her a court hearing."

Abigail took a slow, deliberate sip of her champagne, set the glass down on the table with a crisp clink, and walked out from behind the VIP head table. She didn't hurry. She walked with the deliberate, regal stride of a monarch approaching a battlefield.

She stopped precisely three feet from Bernice and Logan, completely unfazed by the hostile audience.

"Bernice," Abigail said, her voice dropping into a clean, carrying tone that reached every silent ear in the room. "I see you brought the mud from Oakhaven to the Grand Hyatt."

"Don't you try to talk smart with me!" Bernice spat, stepping into Abigail’s personal space. "You ruined my son! You framed him!"

Abigail didn't retreat an inch. She slowly turned her gaze to Logan, whose face was burning with humiliation under the blinding spotlight of three hundred corporate peers.

"Logan," Abigail said, her tone almost conversational. "Did you inform your mother that the police served the search warrant on Vanguard's office two hours ago?"

Logan gasped, his eyes darting frantically. "What... what are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the forty-five thousand dollars you embezzled from Apex Digital," Abigail declared loudly, ensuring every corporate board member heard every single syllable clearly. "The money you forged my signature to steal, and then transferred directly into your mother's personal account under 'Oakhaven Holdings' to cover her unpaid back taxes."

Bernice’s face drained of color instantly. "That's... that's a lie!"

"It’s a documented wire transfer," Abigail countered, pulling a thin, elegant black phone from her clutch and displaying a crisp PDF document on the screen, showing it to the surrounding reporters and board members. "Complete with the bank routing numbers and Logan's digital fingerprint. The District Attorney has already signed the indictment."

She turned her sharp, ice-blue eyes back to Logan.

"You brought your mother here tonight hoping to publicly humiliate me into dropping the charges," Abigail whispered, stepping so close to Logan that only he and Bernice could hear her next words. "But all you’ve done is ensure that when the police arrest you tonight in the lobby, every single media outlet in California will have front-row photos of your downfall."

Right on cue, the heavy doors at the back of the ballroom swung open again. This time, it wasn't Hyatt security. Four uniform officers from the San Diego Police Department walked swiftly down the aisle, their handcuffs jingling softly against their utility belts.

"Logan Vance?" the lead officer called out, his voice booming over the frozen crowd. "You are under arrest for corporate grand theft, financial fraud, and forgery. Put your hands behind your back."

The room erupted into absolute chaos.
