Chapter 14 - Prison Solitude & The Trap

Z

The visitation room at Soledad State Prison was cold, concrete, and smelled perpetually of industrial bleach and stale floor wax. Heavy steel doors slammed with loud echoes throughout the corridor as guards moved inmates in yellow jump-suits back and forth.

Logan Vance sat at the bolted aluminum table, his head resting in his rough, calloused hands. Eighteen months of state incarceration had completely stripped him of his former charm. His hair was shaved short, his cheeks were sunken, and his hands were marked with small scars from prison labor details.

The heavy iron door on the visitor's side opened, and Abigail Prescott Gable walked in.

She wore an elegant ivory coat that stood out starkly against the dreary grey room. Two armed prison guards stood respectfully at attention near the entrance as she took her seat across from her former fiancé.

Logan slowly raised his head, his bloodshot eyes staring at her in utter disbelief.

"Abigail...?" Logan whispered, his voice hoarse and broken. "You... you came here?"

"I am here on legal business, Logan," Abigail said, placing a thin document folder on the cold metal surface between them. "Not for a social visit."

Logan let out a bitter, raspy laugh. "Legal business? What else could you possibly take from me? My mother is dying in the infirmary at Chowchilla with severe kidney failure. My life is over. You won, Abigail. You took everything."

"I took nothing that you didn't freely forfeit through your own greed," Abigail corrected coldly. "I am here because your half-sister, Veronica, and your father, Arthur, have returned to San Diego."

Logan froze. The color drained from his face as if he had been struck. "Arthur...? My father is dead. He died when I was twelve."

"He staged his death," Abigail revealed, observing his reaction closely. "He lives in London under the name Jonathan Vance. He built a fortune while leaving you and Bernice in Oakhaven to rot in poverty. And now, he and Veronica are using your former company's name to attempt a hostile takeover of my estate."

Logan stared at her, his lips trembling in shock and sudden rage. "He... he was alive this whole time? When my mother was eating canned soup in Oakhaven... when I was taking out payday loans to pay her rent... he was living in London?"

"Precisely," Abigail said, sliding a pen across the table toward him. "And Veronica is currently using your old forged signature records from Vanguard Event Management as part of a legal motion in Swiss court, claiming that you acted as an official agent for Jonathan Vance's firm."

"She’s pinning their offshore tax fraud on me," Logan realized, his chest heaving as tears of pure humiliation welled in his eyes. "They’re using me as a burn bag to protect their money!"

"They are," Abigail agreed smoothly. "Which gives you a single choice, Logan. You can remain silent, allow Veronica to use your legal record to shield her father, and take the fall for another ten years of international financial crimes... or you can sign an affidavit detailing every transaction Arthur Vance directed you to make before your arrest."

Logan grabbed the pen with shaking hands. "If I sign... will you help my mother get transferred to a private hospice facility? Please, Abigail... she’s dying in pain."

Abigail looked down at the broken man before her. She felt no satisfaction in his destruction, but her sense of justice was absolute.

"If you sign that affidavit," Abigail stated calmly, "I will ensure Bernice receives proper medical care for her remaining days. But you will serve every single day of your nine-year sentence."

Logan didn't hesitate for another second. He pressed the pen down onto the paper and signed his name in jagged, desperate strokes at the bottom of the legal document.

Abigail picked up the signed affidavit, slipped it back into her leather folder, and stood up.

"Thank you, Logan," Abigail said softly, turning toward the heavy steel exit door.

"Abigail!" Logan called out, his voice echoing desperate against the concrete walls. "Did you... did you ever truly love me? Or was I just a mistake?"

Abigail stopped near the door, her back turned to him.

"You were a lesson, Logan," Abigail answered without looking back. "And today, the lesson is finally complete."
