Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Boardroom

The modern headquarters of Gable-Apex Media Group in downtown San Diego stood as a monument to precision, power, and unyielding ambition. Sixteen months after the total collapse of Logan Vance’s conspiracy, Abigail Prescott Gable walked through the glass-walled lobby with the quiet composure of a leader whose authority was absolute. Employees stepped aside, bowing their heads slightly in silent respect. Every department within the conglomerate operated at peak efficiency under her rigorous standards.
Yet, in the ruthless world of international media, tranquility was often nothing more than the calm before a hostile storm.
Abigail entered her top-floor executive suite, where Sarah Lin was already waiting by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding an encrypted leather folder.
"The Asian market acquisition was supposed to finalize at midnight, Abigail," Sarah said, her tone devoid of its usual warmth. "But three hours ago, our primary Singaporean partner, Pacific Horizon Trust, pulled their capital from the table without warning."
Abigail walked over to her desk, unbuttoning her charcoal blazer. "Pacific Horizon doesn't back out of a ninety-million-dollar buyout over cold feet. Who bought them out?"
"A newly formed private equity firm based in Zurich," Sarah replied, handing over a document. "Vanguard Global Asset Management."
Abigail’s eyes locked onto the name. Vanguard. The deliberate mockery was too sharp to be a mere coincidence. Logan Vance’s failed agency had carried the same name, but Logan was currently serving his nine-year sentence in Soledad State Prison, stripped of every cent and every contact he ever possessed.
"Is there any legal connection to Logan Vance or his mother?" Abigail asked, her voice dropping into an icy register.
"None on paper," Sarah confirmed. "The equity firm is backed by an anonymous offshore trust registered in the Cayman Islands. But their first order of business after acquiring Pacific Horizon’s shares was to file an injunction against Gable-Apex's European distribution rights."
Abigail sat back in her high-backed leather chair, her mind calculating every tactical angle. She opened her laptop and initiated a secure video call with Ethan, who was currently stationed at the company's cybersecurity operations center in San Francisco.
"Ethan," Abigail said as his face appeared on the screen. "I need a forensic deep-dive into Vanguard Global Asset Management out of Zurich. I want beneficial ownership, proxy directors, and every transaction above one hundred thousand dollars made over the last ninety days."
"I’m already on it, Abigail," Ethan answered, his keyboard clicking rapidly in the background. "And you’re not going to like what I’ve found so far. The initial seed capital for Vanguard Global didn't originate in Switzerland. It was wired six weeks ago from a corporate account belonging to Vance International Enterprises—a boutique firm registered in London."
Abigail’s eyebrows pulled together in a rare display of subtle tension. "Vance? Logan had no international relatives."
"He didn't," Ethan agreed grimly. "But his father did. Arthur Vance—the man Bernice claimed died twenty years ago in a hunting accident in Oregon."
The revelation landed with cold, heavy weight.
"Bernice lied about his death," Abigail realized softly.
"She didn't just lie," Ethan added, pulling up an archived record from the UK Companies House. "Arthur Vance staged his own death in 2004 to evade a federal fraud indictment in California. He fled to Europe, changed his identity to Jonathan Sterling Vance, built a shadowy private finance empire in London, and abandoned Bernice and Logan in Oakhaven. And according to Swiss corporate registry updates from yesterday morning... Jonathan Vance has just named a new Chief Executive Officer for Vanguard Global."
"Who?" Sarah asked, leaning over Abigail’s desk.
Ethan paused, looking directly into the camera. "Veronica Vance. Logan’s half-sister. A corporate attorney educated at Oxford, specializing in aggressive hostile takeovers."

Abigail slowly closed her laptop screen halfway, her face an unreadable mask of total calm. The ghost of Logan Vance’s broken family had returned, armed not with muddy boots and clumsy wiretaps, but with European capital, legal prestige, and a blood feud aimed directly at the Gable legacy.
"They think they’re coming for revenge," Abigail said quietly, her eyes gleaming like polished steel. "Sarah, schedule an emergency press conference for tomorrow morning. If Jonathan Vance and his daughter want to step into the light, I’ll make sure the global market sees them clearly."
