Chapter 13 - The Sister’s Gambit

The rooftop restaurant of the Montage Laguna Beach overlooked the crashing dark blue waves of the Pacific Ocean. Golden ambient lamps cast a soft glow over white linen tables, but the atmosphere at the corner table reserved for Abigail Prescott Gable was razor-sharp.
Sitting across from Abigail was Veronica Vance. She was twenty-nine years old, impeccably dressed in a tailored ivory Alexander McQueen suit, with sleek blonde hair pulled back into a severe ponytail. Her features bore a striking, chilling resemblance to Logan, but her eyes held none of her brother’s weakness or desperation. They were cold, calculating, and filled with deep aristocratic disdain.
"I must admit, Abigail," Veronica began, cutting into her sea bass with delicate precision. "My brother was an utter idiot. To think he tried to trap a woman of your intellectual caliber with a fake lease, a muddy hallway, and an uneducated mother's hysterics. It’s almost embarrassing to share his surname."
Abigail took a measured sip of her sparkling water. "If you hold your brother in such low regard, Veronica, why are you spending eighty million dollars of your father's offshore capital to disrupt my acquisition in Asia?"
Veronica set her silver knife down with a soft, metallic clink. "Because Logan’s stupidity cost my family our rightful leverage over the Gable timber trust. My father spent twenty years building an off-ledger network to absorb Arthur Gable’s assets once the trust defaulted. Your sudden appearance as the long-lost daughter didn't just ruin Logan—it wiped out forty percent of my father’s projected European collateral."
"Your father is a fleeing felon who staged his own death to escape federal wire fraud charges," Abigail countered smoothly. "The federal marshals would be fascinated to learn that Jonathan Vance of London is actually Arthur Vance of San Diego."
Veronica offered a thin, mocking smile. "The statute of limitations on my father's 2004 indictment expired three years ago, Abigail. legally, he is a private British citizen enjoying his retirement in Mayfair. You have no legal hold over him, and you certainly have no hold over me."
"Is that why you requested this meeting?" Abigail asked, her tone dry and completely unbothered. "To brag about your father's legal technicalities?"
Veronica leaned forward across the white tablecloth, her tone dropping into a dangerous whisper. "I requested this meeting to offer you an exit strategy. Gable-Apex is strong on the West Coast, but Vanguard Global has already secured sixty percent of your European distribution partners. In forty-eight hours, we will launch a short-selling campaign against your public stock that will erase two hundred million dollars of your market cap."
"And your demand?" Abigail pressed.
"Surrender fifty-one percent of the Oakhaven Timber Trust to Vanguard Global," Veronica demanded coldly. "In exchange, we withdraw our short positions, allow your Singaporean deal to close, and agree to a permanent non-aggression covenant. Refuse, and I will tear Gable-Apex apart piece by piece until you’re left with nothing but the memory of your father’s estate."
Abigail sat back in her chair. She looked at the younger woman with a quiet, terrifying amusement that caused Veronica’s smile to falter slightly.
"You really are Logan’s sister," Abigail observed softly.
Veronica’s eyes flashed with anger. "Do not compare me to that pathetic fool!"
"You suffer from the exact same fatal flaw," Abigail continued, her voice razor-sharp and perfectly audible over the ambient ocean breeze. "You mistake access to capital for actual power. You think because you went to Oxford and wear a British corporate title, you understand how I operate. You came to California expecting a frightened corporate director who would negotiate to protect her stock price."
Abigail reached into her clutch, pulled out a gold-embossed fountain pen, and set it on the table between them.
"I built my career in the mud, Veronica," Abigail said, her eyes pinning the younger woman in place. "I fought through corporate fraud, blackmail, family treason, and public ambushes. By five o'clock tomorrow afternoon, your short-selling campaign won't just fail—it will trigger an SEC regulatory sweep into Vanguard Global's European laundering channels."

Veronica stood up abruptly, her face flushing with anger. "You are bluffing!"
"Try me," Abigail replied serenely, taking another slow sip of her water. "And tell your father that when I take his money, I won't leave him enough to pay his legal fees in London."
