Chapter 15 - The London Collapse

Z

The rain in London fell in a steady, silver drizzle over the cobblestone streets of Mayfair. Inside the opulent, mahogany-paneled private office of Vance International Enterprises on Berkeley Square, Jonathan Sterling Vance sat behind a massive antique desk, sipping fifty-year-old scotch while staring at three glowing stock market monitors.

He was sixty-two years old, with sharp silver hair, a manicured beard, and a cold demeanor that had earned him a formidable reputation in European private equity. Beside him stood Veronica, pacing nervously across the Persian rug while checking her phone every ten seconds.

"The San Diego market opens in twenty minutes," Veronica said, her voice strained. "The short positions against Gable-Apex are fully leveraged. We have forty million pounds riding on this drop, Father."

"Relax, Veronica," Jonathan said smoothly, swirling his scotch in his crystal glass. "Abigail Prescott may be clever in West Coast publishing, but she has no experience with European margin calls. Once the stock drops twelve percent, her institutional backers will panic and force her to negotiate."

Suddenly, the red landline phone on his desk began to ring loudly.

Jonathan picked up the receiver with practiced ease. "Vance."

"Mr. Vance," his senior chief legal officer in Zurich stammered frantically over the line. "We have a catastrophic situation. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority has just issued an emergency freeze order on all primary liquidity accounts belonging to Vanguard Global!"

Jonathan’s hand tightened around the glass. "On what legal grounds? We are fully compliant with Swiss offshore regulations!"

"The San Diego District Attorney, in conjunction with the US Department of Justice and Interpol, has just unsealed a federal indictment for international money laundering and wire fraud," the attorney gasped. "They have an sworn affidavit from your son, Logan Vance, along with electronic ledger records proving that Vanguard Global was established using siphoned corporate funds from California!"

Jonathan dropped his glass. The crystal shattered on the hardwood floor, spilling dark amber scotch across the rug.

"Logan...?" Jonathan whispered, his voice trembling with sudden, cold horror. "That worthless boy signed an affidavit?"

Before Veronica could speak, the double oak doors of the private office were shoved open with heavy force.

Four officers from the London Metropolitan Police Economic Crime Command walked into the room, led by a tall British detective holding a red velvet folder, accompanied by Ethan and Sarah Lin.

"Jonathan Sterling Vance, also known as Arthur Vance," the lead detective announced in a crisp, carrying voice. "I am arresting you under the Extradition Act of 2003 pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of California."

Veronica stepped forward, her face pale with shock. "You can't do this! My father is a naturalized British citizen! He has immunity—"

"Your father's British citizenship was obtained using fraudulent identity documents in 2005, Ms. Vance," Sarah Lin interrupted smoothly, stepping into the center of the room with a victorious smile. "Which invalidates his naturalization under UK immigration law. Furthermore, the SEC has just suspended Vanguard Global’s trading license permanently."

On the desk monitors, the stock charts for Gable-Apex Media Group suddenly exploded upward in a massive, green spike. News banners scrolled across the bottom of the financial networks:

GABLE-APEX MEDIA COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF PACIFIC HORIZON TRUST. STOCK SURGES 32%. VANGUARD GLOBAL SHARES COLLAPSE TO ZERO.

Jonathan Vance slumped back into his leather chair, staring at the screen in complete, catatonic shock as the British officers stepped forward, pulling pair of steel handcuffs from their belts.

"Get your hands off him!" Veronica shrieked, backing away toward the window. "You ruined us! Abigail Prescott ruined us!"

Ethan took a step toward her, holding up a fresh legal notice. "Veronica Vance, you are officially served with a federal subpoena to appear before a grand jury in San Diego next Monday regarding your role in corporate short-selling fraud. I suggest you retain a very good American lawyer."

Jonathan was pulled to his feet, his arms pinned behind his back as the steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. The proud, arrogant man who had spent twenty years running from his past was led out of his Mayfair sanctuary in shame, passing through a barrage of flashing press cameras already waiting on the rainy street below.
