Chapter 8 - The Oxfordshire Secret

Z

The Vance Estate in Oxfordshire was a grand, sprawling manor built from honey-colored stone, surrounded by hundreds of acres of ancient oak trees and rolling green hills. It was Arthur’s favorite place on earth—a sanctuary of quiet grandeur far removed from the cold ambition of London.

Chloe and I arrived just as the afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, dramatic shadows across the estate. The house was empty, kept in pristine condition by a skeleton crew of caretakers who bowed respectfully as Chloe stepped out of the car.

We walked through the silent, cavernous halls, our footsteps echoing off the stone floors. Neither of us spoke. The weight of why we were here hung heavy in the air.

We descended the narrow spiral staircase leading into the estate's subterranean level. The air grew damp and cold, smelling of aged oak barrels and earth. The wine cellar was massive, lined with thousands of vintage bottles spanning nearly a century.

At the very back of the cellar, hidden behind a heavy velvet curtain, stood a reinforced steel door with an old-fashioned brass keyhole.

Chloe pulled the brass key from her pocket. Her hand was shaking.

"Are you sure you want to open it?" I asked softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Once we pull those documents out, there's no going back, Chloe. Julian will face manslaughter charges. The scandal will drag your father’s name back into the tabloids."

Chloe looked at the key, then at me. "Dad died thinking it was an accident, Mom. You suffered for years believing God had just been cruel to us. Julian didn't just break safety rules—he treated Dad's life like a line item on a balance sheet. He deserves to answer for that."

She inserted the key into the lock and turned it.

A heavy metallic click echoed through the dark cellar. Chloe pushed the steel door open, revealing a small, lit alcove containing a single iron safe. Sitting on top of the safe was an unsealed manila folder.

Chloe reached out and picked up the folder. Inside were the original 2014 inspection logs, flagged in bright red ink: CRITICAL FAILURE RISK - CRANE HYDRAULICS IMPAIRED. Beneath the warning was a handwritten note from Julian: POSTPONE REPAIRS UNTIL NEXT FISCAL YEAR. KEEP THE DOCK RUNNING.

It was cold, mathematical, and deadly. A man’s life traded for a quarterly profit margin.

Tears welled in my eyes as I read my late husband's name written on the incident report attached to the back.

"We have him," Chloe whispered, her voice dark and full of grief. "We can give this to the Crown Prosecution Service tomorrow."

"You won't be giving anything to anyone," a cold, sharp voice echoed from the shadows behind us.

Chloe and I whirled around.

Stepping out from behind the heavy wine racks was Victoria Vance.

She looked ghastly. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes sunken and manic, and she wore a long dark coat that hung loosely off her thin frame. But what made my blood run cold was the small, matte-black handgun pointed directly at Chloe’s chest.

"Victoria..." Chloe gasped, stepping in front of me instinctively. "How did you get in here?"

"I still have the security codes to my father's house, you stupid bitch," Victoria spat, her voice trembling with unhinged rage. "Did you really think I was just going to sit back and watch you ruin my entire family? Julian is in a high-security prison! My legal license has been revoked! Sebastian is hiding in Colombia! And you're living in luxury on our money!"

"It was never your money, Victoria," Chloe said, keeping her voice remarkably steady despite the gun trained on her heart. "Arthur left it to me. And your brother killed my father."

"I don't give a damn about your father!" Victoria screamed, her finger tightening on the trigger. "My brother made a mistake ten years ago! Businessmen make decisions every day! People die! That’s how the world works!"

"He let a man die to save a few thousand dollars!" I yelled, stepping out from behind Chloe, unable to stay silent. "Shoot me if you want, Victoria, but you leave my daughter out of this!"

"Shut up! Both of you shut up!" Victoria’s eyes darted wildly between us. She was completely unraveling, pushed over the edge by the total destruction of her privileged world. "Give me that folder. Give it to me right now, or I swear to God I’ll leave both of your bodies in this cellar and burn this house to the ground!"

Chloe slowly held up the manila folder. "You want this, Victoria?"

"Hand it over!" Victoria demanded, stepping closer, the gun shaking in her hands.

"Take it," Chloe said softly.

With lightning speed, Chloe didn't hand the folder over—she threw it violently straight into Victoria’s face!

The thick stack of papers exploded into the air, blinding Victoria for a fraction of a second.

BANG!

A deafening gunshot shattered the silence of the cellar, the flash illuminating the stone walls. The bullet ricocheted off the steel safe with a terrifying screech.

I screamed, but Chloe was already moving. She tackled Victoria to the damp stone floor, grabbing Victoria’s wrist and slamming it against the ground.

BANG!

A second shot fired wild, shattering a row of vintage wine bottles above them, showering both women in red wine and glass.

Victoria was screaming, biting, and scratching like a feral animal, but Chloe had spent months lifting heavy patients as a nurse—she possessed a raw, physical strength that Victoria’s corporate lifestyle had never built. Chloe twisted Victoria’s arm until the gun clattered onto the floor.

I lunged forward, kicking the handgun far across the cellar floor, out of reach.

Chloe pinned Victoria to the ground, pulling Victoria’s arms behind her back, pressing her knee firmly into the small of her back—a textbook restraint technique.

Victoria sobbed hysterically, her face pressed against the wet stone floor, soaked in red wine that looked terrifyingly like blood. "Let me go! Please, let me go!"

Heavy footsteps came crashing down the spiral staircase. Mark Harrison and three armed private security guards burst into the wine cellar, guns drawn.

"Mrs. Vance!" Mark yelled, taking in the chaotic scene—the shattered wine, the scattered legal documents, and Chloe pinning Victoria to the floor.

"She’s secure, Mark," Chloe said, breathing heavily, her face flushed, her black sweater stained with wine. She looked up at Mark with an expression of absolute, unshakeable command. "Call the police. Tell them we have the missing evidence for the 2014 dock collapse... and a fresh charge of attempted double murder for Victoria Vance."
