Chapter 12 - The Gala at Schloss Brandt

Z

Schloss Brandt was an imposing nineteenth-century fortress perched high on a cliff overlooking the misty waters of the Rhine River. Illuminated by dramatic spotlights against the pitch-black night, it looked less like a venue for a charity gala and more like a gilded cage built for kings and tyrants.

An armada of luxury limousines lined the cobblestone driveway. European aristocrats, corrupt politicians, and billionaire industrialists walked up the grand stone steps in velvet dresses and tailored tuxedos.

Chloe and I stepped out of our sleek black sedan. Chloe wore a breathtaking floor-length emerald green silk gown with a subtle diamond necklace—an understated declaration of power and elegance. I wore a classic dark navy velvet dress. Mark Harrison walked three steps behind us, dressed in a sharp tuxedo, his sharp eyes scanning every guard, every balcony, and every security camera.

As we entered the grand ballroom—a cavernous space adorned with antique tapestries, crystal chandeliers, and vaulted ceilings—a hush fell over the crowd. Murmurs echoed across the room.

"Is that Chloe Vance?"

"The Titan of Mayfair?"

"What is she doing in von Brandt’s stronghold?"

Chloe ignored the whispers, walking through the room with absolute composure.

At the far end of the ballroom, standing near a roaring stone fireplace, was Baron Henrik von Brandt. He was a man in his early sixties, with silver-white hair slicked back, a aristocratic posture, and cold, pale blue eyes that resembled chipped ice. He held a crystal glass of champagne, surrounded by four dark-suited security operatives.

When he saw Chloe, a slow, predatory smile spread across his face. He excused himself from his group and walked toward us, his polished leather shoes clicking against the marble floor.

"Ah, the famous Mrs. Chloe Vance," von Brandt said in flawless, accented English, taking Chloe’s hand and kissing the air above her knuckles with mock courtliness. "And her protective mother, Elena. Welcome to Schloss Brandt."

"Save the pleasantries, Baron," Chloe said softly, her voice cool and sharp as a razor. "We both know why I'm here."

Von Brandt chuckled softly, taking a slow sip of his champagne. "Direct. Decisive. Arthur always spoke of your spine. Though I must admit, I was surprised you had the courage to step into my home after what you did to Julian and Victoria."

"Julian and Victoria were criminals who thought money made them invincible," Chloe replied, looking him dead in the eye. "You’re making the exact same mistake, von Brandt."

Von Brandt’s smile faded slightly, his pale eyes narrowing into cold slits. He leaned in closer, dropping his voice so only the three of us could hear.

"You are a young girl playing with an empire you don't understand, Chloe," von Brandt whispered, his tone dripping with quiet malice. "Arthur was a sentimental fool who let guilt destroy his legacy. You think you conquered London with your court trials and PR campaigns? This is Germany. The Rhine is my river. Every port, every inspector, every politician along this water answers to me."

"Is that why you’re hacking my ships and fabricating safety violations?" Chloe asked, not backing down an inch. "Because you're afraid of automated green vessels making your dirty shipping networks obsolete?"

"I am offering you a choice," von Brandt said, pulling a folded silver-embossed document from his velvet coat pocket. "Sell me fifty-one percent of Vance Logistics’ European operations by midnight tonight. In exchange, your ships will be cleared immediately, your stock value will skyrocket, and you can return to your little medical foundation in England with a pocket full of gold."

"And if I refuse?" Chloe asked.

Von Brandt stepped closer, his cold breath brushing her ear. "If you refuse... a tragic 'industrial accident' will occur at our Duisburg port facility at midnight. One of your automated vessels will experience a sudden navigation failure and collide with a commercial fuel barge. The resulting chemical spill will destroy the Rhine ecosystem, and Vance Logistics will be blamed for the greatest environmental disaster in German history. You will be arrested before your plane even touches the runway in London."

My heart stopped. I felt dizzy, the floor swaying beneath my feet. He wasn't just threatening financial ruin—he was setting up a catastrophic disaster that would destroy thousands of lives and put Chloe in a German prison forever.

Chloe didn't flinch. She simply looked at the silver document in his hand, then raised her eyes to his.

"You have until midnight, Mrs. Vance," von Brandt smirked, handing her the document. "Enjoy the party."

He turned and walked away into the crowd, leaving us standing alone in the center of the glittering ballroom as the clock on the wall chimed 10:00 PM. We had exactly two hours to stop a disaster that could destroy everything.
