Chapter 7 - The Final Request

Six months had passed since Julian’s arrest. The dust had finally settled over the Vance empire. Vance Global Logistics was thriving under Chloe’s leadership; the stock price had hit an all-time high, and Project Horizon was officially launched, bringing revolutionary green shipping vessels to ports across Europe.
The tabloids that had once painted Chloe as a ruthless gold-digger now called her "The Titan of Mayfair." She was featured on the covers of business magazines, praised for her poise, intelligence, and unwavering ethics.
Yet, despite all the wealth and power, Chloe remained unchanged at her core. She still lived quietly, still spent her weekends volunteering at the local children’s hospital, and still called me every night just to ask about my day.
We had moved out of the massive, lonely Mayfair penthouse and purchased a charming, light-filled townhouse in Kensington with a beautiful garden in the back. For the first time in ten years, my health was perfect, my daughter was safe, and our lives were free from terror.
Until a dusty, leather-bound box arrived from Switzerland.
It was delivered on a rainy Tuesday morning by a courier from a high-security vault in Zurich. The box bore Arthur’s personal wax seal—a crest featuring a single silver anchor. Attached to it was a letter from a Swiss notary stating that the box was to be delivered to Chloe exactly six months after Julian’s legal conviction.
Chloe and I sat at the marble kitchen island, staring at the box.
"Do you want me to open it?" I offered gently, sensing her hesitation.
"No," Chloe said softly, touching the cold wax seal. "Arthur meant this for me."
She broke the seal and lifted the heavy wooden lid. Inside lay three items: an old brass key, a leather pocket watch that had stopped at 4:15, and a thick, handwritten journal bound in faded green leather.
Chloe picked up the journal. On the very first page, written in Arthur’s distinctive, elegant cursive handwriting, was a date: October 14, 2014.
It was the exact day I had undergone my life-saving cancer surgery ten years ago.
Chloe began to read aloud, her voice trembling slightly:
"To my dear Chloe,
If you are reading this, it means my children have paid the price for their choices, and you have successfully defended the life I entrusted to you. I never doubted you for a second.
There is one final truth I must confess—a secret I was too cowardly to tell you while I was alive. You know that I paid for your mother’s medical treatment ten years ago through my anonymous foundation. What you do not know... is why."
Chloe paused, looking at me with wide, confused eyes. I felt a cold knot form in my stomach. Why? Had Arthur known us before?
Chloe turned the page and continued reading:
"Ten years ago, Vance Logistics was involved in a tragic industrial accident at the port near your hometown. A cargo crane collapsed due to a mechanical failure that my safety inspectors had flagged three times—warnings that Julian, who was managing that sector at the time, quietly ignored to save costs.
The collapse destroyed a section of the civilian dock. A man working on the pier was killed instantly. His name was Thomas Keller."
I gasped, slamming my hand over my mouth. My vision blurred as blood rushed to my ears.
Thomas Keller. My husband. Chloe’s father.
"Dad..." Chloe whispered, the word tearing from her throat like a sob.
Ten years ago, my husband had died in a horrific accident at the docks. We were told it was a freak equipment failure—an 'act of God'—and the shipping company had offered a small, quick insurance settlement that barely covered his funeral costs. Two months later, I was diagnosed with stage-three cancer, crushed by grief and medical bills, until the "anonymous donor" miraculously stepped in to save my life.
Chloe continued reading through her tears:
"When I discovered that Julian had covered up the safety violations that killed Thomas Keller, I was devastated. I wanted to turn my own son over to the police, but I failed as a father—I allowed my lawyers to bury the evidence to protect my family's name.
My guilt consumed me. When I learned that Thomas’s widow, Elena, was dying of cancer and could not afford treatment, I swore to God I would save her, no matter the cost. I used my private funds to pay every penny of her medical bills. But I knew money could never bring back her husband, or your father.
Years later, when you walked into my hospital room in London as my nurse, I recognized your name instantly. I looked into your eyes and saw Thomas’s kindness staring back at me. God had given me a second chance not just to seek forgiveness, but to protect the daughter of the man my family had destroyed."
Chloe dropped the journal onto the table. Tears streamed down her cheeks, dripping onto the faded green leather.
"He... he knew," Chloe wept, her voice breaking. "All this time... he knew who I was."
I stood up and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her tightly against my chest. We cried together in the quiet kitchen, the ghosts of our past suddenly rising up to envelop us once again.
The man who had saved my life was the father of the monster who had killed my husband. Arthur hadn't just helped us out of random charity; he had spent the last decade of his life desperately seeking redemption for a sin his son had committed.
"There's more," Chloe whispered after a long moment, picking up the small brass key from the box.
She turned to the final page of the journal.
"In the basement of the Vance Estate in Oxfordshire," Arthur had written, "behind the wine cellar, there is a locked steel safe. This key opens it. Inside, you will find the original, unredacted safety reports from the 2014 dock collapse, bearing Julian's signature authorizing the cover-up.
I could not bring myself to send my son to prison for murder while I was alive. I was weak. But I leave this choice to you and your mother. Justice is finally in your hands."
Chloe looked up at me, the key glittering in her palm like a heavy, golden burden.

We had won the war for Arthur's empire. We had defeated Julian in the boardroom. But now, we held the power to destroy him completely—to avenge the man I had loved, and the father Chloe had lost ten years ago.
Chloe looked into my eyes, her expression raw with pain. "What do we do, Mom?"
