Chapter 14 - The Abyss of the Rhine

The basement beneath Schloss Brandt was a damp, stone dungeon dating back to the Middle Ages, retrofitted with modern steel doors, glowing blue LED lights, and humming server racks.

Von Brandt stood in front of a heavy vault door, rapidly typing a ten-digit override code into a glowing keypad. His security guards stood beside him, guns drawn, nervously scanning the dark hallway.

"Faster, Herr Baron!" one guard urged as water began to seep down the stone walls from the sprinklers above.

The vault door hissed open with a release of pneumatic pressure. Von Brandt stepped inside a high-tech control room dominated by three massive server towers and a wall of live video monitors displaying the dark waters of the Duisburg shipping channel.

On the central monitor, a massive red icon was flashing:

VANCE ENDEAVOUR - DISTANCE TO TARGET: 1.2 KILOMETERS. OVERRIDE INITIATED.

"Perfect," von Brandt smirked, watching the automated cargo ship slowly drift toward the massive fuel barge on the screen. "Five more minutes, and the Vance empire is history."

"Shut it down, von Brandt!" Chloe’s voice echoed sharply through the stone vault.

Von Brandt whirled around.

Mark Harrison stepped out of the shadows, firing two rapid, silenced shots from his suppressed pistol. Pfft! Pfft!

The two security guards collapsed to the floor, disarmed and unconscious before they even realized what was happening. Mark stepped forward, locking the heavy vault door behind us, isolating us deep beneath the castle.

Von Brandt backed away toward the server rack, his face pale with shock, but he quickly regained his composure, pulling a small silver remote detonator from his coat.

"You are too late, girl!" von Brandt sneered, holding his thumb over the detonator button. "The override command is already executing! If I press this button, it manually detonates the auxiliary fuel line on the Duisburg barge right before collision! The explosion will kill fifty port workers and pollute the river for a hundred miles!"

"You're a monster," I shouted, stepping between Chloe and the Baron. "You'd murder fifty innocent people just to protect your money?!"

"In business, lives are cheap, old woman!" von Brandt spat, his thumb hovering millimeter away from the button. "Step back, or I press it right now!"

Chloe didn't step back. She stepped forward.

"Press it," Chloe said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute confidence that caught von Brandt completely off guard.

Von Brandt hesitated, his eyes widening in disbelief. "What?"

"I said press it, Henrik," Chloe repeated, taking another step toward him, her emerald dress trailing across the wet floor. "Press the button. Prove to me that you're willing to go to a German supermax prison for terroristic mass murder."

"You think I'm bluffing?!" von Brandt screamed, his hand trembling violently.

"I know you're bluffing," Chloe said smoothly, pointing to the live monitor behind him. "Because while you were busy playing host at your fancy gala, my technology team in Rotterdam was working with the German Federal Police."

Von Brandt’s head snapped toward the monitor.

The red flashing alert on the screen suddenly vanished, replaced by a bright green lock icon:

GERMAN FEDERAL CYBER CRIME DIVISION - SERVER COMMAND REPOSSESSED.

On the live video feed, two German police patrol boats sped out from the darkness of the Duisburg channel, surrounding the fuel barge. At the same time, the automated cargo ship Vance Endeavour smoothly turned its rudder, safely avoiding the barge by fifty meters and coming to a complete, controlled stop.

"How..." von Brandt stammered, dropping the silver remote as his knees buckled. "How did you access my private server?!"

"You used the same Panama-based encryption software that Julian used six months ago," Chloe revealed, pulling out her tablet and showing him the live transfer logs. "Did you really think Arthur didn't keep records of your illegal smuggling routes from eight years ago? Arthur knew you were corrupt, von Brandt. He kept a master decryption key hidden in his personal bank vault in Zurich—the same key he gave me in his final journal."

Von Brandt slumped against the server rack, his eyes hollowed out, staring at the young girl who had just systematically dismantled his lifetime of crime in less than two hours.

Heavy banging echoed against the vault door from the hallway outside.

"GERMAN FEDERAL POLICE!" a voice shouted in German through the steel door. "OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY!"

Mark walked over and pulled the heavy locking lever, swinging the vault door open. A dozen heavily armed German tactical officers burst into the room, subduing von Brandt and pinning him to the stone floor.

As the officers snapped steel handcuffs onto von Brandt’s wrists, the silver-haired Baron looked up at Chloe, his voice choked with rage and disbelief.

"Who are you?!" von Brandt whispered, staring at her as if she were a ghost. "Arthur was just a businessman... how did he raise someone like you?!"

May you like

Chloe stood tall beside me, taking my hand in hers.

"Arthur didn't raise me," Chloe said softly, her voice echoing clearly through the ancient stone dungeon. "My mother did."
