Chapter 11 - The Ghost of the Rhine

The inauguration of the Thomas & Arthur Vance Foundation brought peace to our lives, but peace in the corporate world is often just the calm before a storm.

Two months after the foundation opened, a new shadow fell over Vance Global Logistics. It began with subtle anomalies in the Rhine River shipping routes—our automated green-energy vessels experienced sudden, unaccounted-for navigation delays, software glitches, and brief communication blackouts near the port of Duisburg, Germany. At first, Marcus dismissed it as routine system calibration errors. But when three fully loaded container ships were forced to dock unexpectedly due to phantom system alerts, lost revenue began to pile up into millions.

I sat with Chloe in her private office at the foundation’s Oxfordshire estate. Outside, dusk was painting the sky in deep shades of violet and crimson. Chloe was reviewing the diagnostic logs on her tablet, her brow furrowed in concentration.

"It’s not a software bug, Mom," Chloe said quietly, sliding the tablet toward me. "Look at the time stamps. The outages happen at exact forty-eight-hour intervals, precisely when our ships enter the private sector of the Duisburg terminal."

"Is someone hacking us again?" I asked, a knot of familiar anxiety tightening in my stomach. "Julian is still in prison, isn't he?"

"Julian is locked away for life," Chloe replied, standing up and walking to the window. "But Julian wasn't the only person who knew how Vance Logistics operated. When Arthur ran the company ten years ago, he had an international business partner—a German logistics tycoon named Baron Henrik von Brandt."

The name sent a chill through the room. I remembered Arthur mentioning von Brandt once during his final weeks. Henrik von Brandt was known in European shipping circles as 'The Phantom of the Rhine'—a ruthless aristocrat who controlled private ports, rail networks, and dark-web maritime logistics across Central Europe. Arthur had severed all corporate ties with von Brandt eight years ago after discovering the Baron was using legitimate shipping lanes to smuggle illegal industrial waste.

"Why would von Brandt target us now?" I asked.

Before Chloe could answer, her secure phone chimed. It was an encrypted video call from Mark Harrison, who was currently at our Rotterdam hub.

Chloe answered, placing the call on speaker. Mark’s face appeared on the screen, his expression dark and tense.

"Mrs. Vance," Mark said without preamble. "We have a critical situation in Germany. Henrik von Brandt just launched a hostile takeover attempt against our European logistics subsidiary. He’s purchased thirty percent of our public debt through offshore hedge funds, and he’s holding our Duisburg port access rights hostage."

"On what grounds?" Chloe demanded, her voice instantly dropping into her sharp, authoritative Chairwoman tone.

"He claims our automated vessels violate European maritime security protocols," Mark explained. "He’s bribed local port authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia to impound our ships until a full 'safety audit' is conducted by his own private security firm. If our ships sit idle for another week, our European clients will face supply chain breaches, triggering automatic breach-of-contract penalties worth over two hundred million Euros."

Chloe didn't flinch, but her jaw clenched tight. "He’s trying to bleed us dry financially so he can force us to sell him controlling shares in Vance Logistics."

"It gets worse," Mark added gravely. "Von Brandt sent a formal invitation. He’s hosting an exclusive, invitation-only charity gala at his castle on the Rhine tomorrow night. He specifically requested your presence, Mrs. Vance... and he warned that if you don't attend, he will release forged environmental contamination reports to the European Press on Monday morning."

I grabbed Chloe’s hand. "It’s a trap, Chloe. You can't go to his castle! He’s dangerous!"

Chloe turned to me, her eyes filled with the same fierce, unyielding determination that had carried us through the Old Bailey trial.

"If Henrik von Brandt wants a war on the Rhine, Mom... I’m not going to let him wage it from the shadows," Chloe said calmly. "Pack your bags. We’re going to Germany."
