Chapter 8 - The Fall of Apex

Z
At 8:00 AM on Friday morning, Wall Street was hit by a financial nuclear strike.
I sat in the green room of CNBC’s Midtown studios, watching the live television monitors while a makeup artist applied a final dusting of powder to my nose. On the screen, the anchor’s voice was laced with dramatic urgency.
"Breaking news this morning," the anchor announced, as red ticker text flashed across the bottom of the screen. "Federal agents from the FBI and the Department of Justice have executed a sweeping search warrant at the Wall Street headquarters of Apex Global Capital. Managing Director Marcus Vance has been taken into federal custody without bail, charged with multiple counts of extortion, corporate espionage, wire fraud, and market manipulation."
The camera cut to live footage outside the Apex building. Four federal agents were escorting Marcus Vance out of his glass tower. He was wearing a dark blue suit, but his hands were handcuffed in front of him, covered by a black jacket. His face was pale, his eyes wide with shock as hundreds of news cameras flashed in his face.
"The arrest comes following an explosive whistle-blower investigation led by Clara Mercer, the newly appointed CEO of Mercer & Partners," the anchor continued. "In a related story, Mercer & Partners stock has surged thirty-two percent in early morning trading following the announcement of a historic fifty-million-euro partnership with Spain’s Hale Group."
"Thirty seconds to air, Mrs. Mercer," the stage manager whispered, gesturing toward the main set.
I stood up, adjusting my navy tailored jacket. I walked out onto the set, taking my seat opposite Jim Cramer’s co-anchor, Sarah Eisen, who smiled warmly as I settled into the leather guest chair.
"3... 2... 1... We’re live."
"Joining us now in an exclusive interview is Clara Mercer, Chairwoman and CEO of Mercer & Partners," Sarah said, turning to the camera. "Clara, less than a week ago, you were working as a senior flight attendant for Delta Air Lines. Today, you are running one of the most successful venture firms on Wall Street after personally uncovering a massive corporate fraud scheme. How did you pull this off?"
I looked directly into the camera lens, holding the gaze of millions of viewers across the globe.
"It wasn't a magic trick, Sarah," I said smoothly, my voice calm, warm, and utterly commanding. "Mercer & Partners was built on integrity, hard work, and my family's vision. A rogue executive attempted to steal that legacy for his own personal greed. When you fly at thirty-thousand feet for a living, you learn very quickly that when an emergency occurs, you don't panic. You follow protocol, you secure the cabin, and you take control of the aircraft."
"And what about Julian Mercer?" Sarah asked. "Your husband... and former CEO? His extradition hearing in Madrid concluded two hours ago."
"Julian Mercer is returning to New York in federal custody," I stated without a trace of emotion. "He will face the consequences of his actions in a court of law. Mercer & Partners has severed all ties with him, and our civil lawsuit against him for asset recovery is already underway."
"And your message to Wall Street firms who thought they could take advantage of your firm during this crisis?"
I smiled—a sharp, brilliant, undeniable expression of total victory.
"My message is simple," I said. "Mercer & Partners is under new management. We are stronger, cleaner, and more profitable than ever. And to anyone who thinks they can underestimate me because of where I started... I welcome them to try."
The interview concluded to ringing applause from the studio crew. As I walked off the set, Victoria Vance was waiting in the holding area, holding two glasses of cold champagne.
"That was a masterclass in crisis communications, Clara," Victoria beamed, handing me a glass. "Marcus Vance’s legal team just reached out. They are practically begging for a plea deal, but the Department of Justice is refusing to negotiate. Marcus is going away for at least fifteen years."
"And Julian?" I asked, taking a small sip of champagne.
"Julian’s plane touches down at JFK in an hour," Victoria replied. "Federal marshals will transport him directly to the Metropolitan Correction Center. His bail application was denied. He’ll be awaiting trial in a six-by-eight cell."
"JFK," I repeated softly, a poetic smile touching my lips. "Terminal 4?"
"Terminal 4," Victoria confirmed with a laugh. "Right where it all began."
I looked out the high windows of the studio tower toward the Queens skyline in the distance. Seven days ago, I had boarded a Boeing 777 as a woman betrayed, holding a tray of champagne glasses and trying to hide my heartbreak.
Today, I held the reins of an international financial empire.
"Victoria," I said, setting my glass down.
"Yes, Clara?"

"Call my assistant. Tell her to schedule a meeting with the board for two o'clock. We have a fifty-million-euro expansion to execute."
"Right away, Madam CEO."
