Chapter 3 - Descent into Madrid

Z
The cabin lights began their gradual sunrise simulation, shifting from deep indigo to a soft, golden amber as the pilot’s voice came over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is First Officer Vance from the flight deck. We’ve begun our initial descent into Madrid-Barajas Airport. We are expecting a smooth arrival at approximately 6:05 AM local time. Current ground temperature is forty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. Cabin crew, please prepare the cabin for arrival."
I hung up the interphone and took a final walk through the First Class cabin. Most of the passengers were stirring, stretching, sipping their morning orange juice or espresso.
In Seat 2A, Julian sat frozen, staring blankly at the seatback screen in front of him. He hadn't slept a wink. His pristine designer suit was now crumpled, his dark hair disheveled, and his eyes were sunken with a mixture of exhaustion and mounting panic.
Beside him in 2B, Serena was already fully dressed, her hair combed back into a sleek, professional bun. She was reading a digital copy of El País on her tablet, completely ignoring Julian’s desperate, sideways glances.
As I passed his row, Julian reached out and caught the hem of my apron.
"Clara," he rasped, his voice hoarse. "Please. Talk to me. Just five minutes."
I stopped and looked down at him, my face an unreadable mask. "Please stow your tray table and return your seatback to the full upright position, Mr. Mercer."
"Clara, stop the official nonsense!" he hissed, leaning closer. "I know I messed up. I know I hurt you. But if you ruin this deal with Hale, you ruin us. Everything we worked for since our twenties! The sacrifices we made!"
"Correction, Julian," I said, keeping my voice dead even. "Everything I worked for. You spent the last three years treating our life's work like a personal casino. You didn't make sacrifices. You made reservations."
"I did it for the firm!" he pleaded, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the armrest. "We needed the Hale merger to stay afloat after the Tokyo venture failed!"
"The Tokyo venture failed because you ignored my legal counsel and invested in a shell corporation owned by your college buddy," I retorted coldly. "Ensure your seatbelt is securely fastened."
"You can't do this to me!" Julian snapped, his voice rising just enough to catch the attention of the passenger in 1A. "I am the Chief Executive Officer of Mercer & Partners!"
"Not anymore," I whispered, leaning in so close only he could hear. "The board voted two hours ago. Your executive privileges are revoked. Your equity is frozen. And the moment we clear customs, you will be served with a formal notice of corporate fraud."
Julian’s face went entirely drain of color. He looked as if he might vomit. "You... you called an emergency meeting behind my back?"
"You cheated on me behind mine," I replied simply. "I’d say we’re even, but mathematically, you owe me about twelve million dollars."
I turned on my heel and walked back to the galley, leaving him suffocating in his own terror.
The plane glided down through the thick cloud layer surrounding Madrid, the wheels hitting the runway with a firm, familiar thud. The thrust reversers roared, slowing the massive aircraft down as we taxied toward Terminal 4 Satellite.
As senior purser, I took my station at the forward L1 door. Outside the thick acrylic window, the cold Spanish morning was grey and wet. Ground crew in high-visibility vests moved about the tarmac, and line of luxury dark sedans sat parked just past the jetbridge security zone—a privilege usually reserved for high-ranking diplomats or billionaire industrial elites.
I knew who those cars belonged to.
The engines ground to a halt, the seatbelt sign turned off, and the familiar chime echoed through the cabin. Passengers began retrieving their carry-on bags.
Julian scrambled out of Seat 2A, shoving his laptop into his leather briefcase with trembling hands. He grabbed his coat and rushed toward the front of the aircraft, clearly desperate to be the first off the plane, to escape into the crowded terminal before the net pulled tight.
"Mr. Mercer," I said, stepping directly into the doorway, blocking his path with my body. "Please remain behind the yellow line until the captain has turned off the seatbelt sign and the jetbridge is fully attached."
"Get out of my way, Clara!" Julian snarled, dropping the polite facade entirely. He made a move to push past me.
"Step back, sir!" Mark stepped out from the galley, his large frame immediately filling the space beside me. His hands were clasped, his expression stern. "Assaulting or disobeying a flight crew member at the aircraft door is a federal offense in Spanish jurisdiction. Do not make this worse for yourself."
Julian glared at Mark, then at me, panting heavily. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"
"I take no pleasure in watching a man destroy himself, Julian," I said softly. "I just happen to be the one opening the door."
The heavy mechanical lock of the L1 door clicked, and the lever rotated upward. I pulled the massive door inward and swung it wide open, letting in the crisp, cold air of Madrid.
Standing on the jetbridge were four men in immaculate dark suits.
At the front stood Señor Alejandro Hale. He was a man in his late fifties, with silver hair, sharp features, and a posture that commanded absolute authority. Beside him stood two Spanish corporate lawyers holding thick leather folders, and two officers from the Guardia Civil—Spain’s military police force.
Julian gasped, taking a instinctual step backward. "Alejandro... what a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting you to meet us at the gate—"
Alejandro Hale ignored Julian completely. His eyes swept past the disheveled executive and landed on Serena, who stepped past Julian with her head held high.
"Papa," Serena said in Spanish, stepping into her father's embrace.
"Are you alright, mi vida?" Alejandro asked, his voice thick with emotion as he held his daughter.
"I am fine," Serena said, stepping back and looking at Julian with absolute disdain. "Thanks to Mrs. Mercer. She opened my eyes before this pathetic parasite could ruin our family name."
Alejandro turned his gaze to Julian. The warmth in the old billionaire's eyes instantly transformed into liquid ice.
"Señor Mercer," Alejandro said, his English precise and laced with cold venom. "My legal team in New York received a very interesting briefing three hours ago from Mrs. Mercer’s counsel. It appears you attempted to secure a forty-million-euro credit line from my firm using falsified financial statements and unauthorized corporate guarantees."
"Alejandro, wait! It’s a misunderstanding!" Julian stammered, sweat glistening on his forehead. "My wife—she’s unstable! She’s trying to ruin me because of a personal marital dispute! You can't trust her!"
Alejandro raised a single hand, silencing Julian instantly. "Mrs. Mercer did not need to speak a word. Her legal team provided bank records, forensic audit reports, and a formal notification of your termination from Mercer & Partners. You came to my country on stolen money, attempting to swindle my enterprise and manipulate my daughter."
Alejandro gestured to one of his lawyers, who stepped forward and handed Julian a thick white envelope.
"This is a formal notice of cancellation," Alejandro continued. "The Hale Group terminates all negotiations with you immediately. Furthermore, we are filing criminal charges for corporate espionage and attempted fraud in the Kingdom of Spain."
Julian dropped his briefcase. It hit the floor of the jetbridge with a dull thud. "You can't do this... I have a meeting with the ministry at ten!"
"You have a meeting with the magistrate at ten," one of the Guardia Civil officers said in firm English, stepping forward and grabbing Julian’s arm. "Julian Mercer, you are being detained for questioning regarding financial irregularities and fraud within Spanish jurisdiction."
"Clara!" Julian screamed as the officers pulled his hands behind his back, snapping high-shine steel handcuffs over his wrists. "Clara, tell them! Tell them it's a mistake! Call Victoria! Undo this!"
I stood at the aircraft door, my hands folded neatly in front of my navy uniform. I looked into the eyes of the man I had spent twelve years loving, supporting, and building a life with—the man who had traded my loyalty for cheap luxury and hollow vanity.
"Safe travels in Spain, Julian," I said quietly. "I hear the detention centers in Madrid are lovely this time of year."
As the police dragged a screaming, pleading Julian Mercer down the jetbridge, Alejandro Hale turned to me. He took off his leather glove, extended his hand, and bowed his head slightly in respect.
"Mrs. Mercer," Alejandro said smoothly. "My daughter has informed me of your incredible poise and integrity under... deeply trying circumstances. Mercer & Partners is a strong firm, but it was clear to me today who truly held the reins."
"Thank you, Señor Hale," I replied, shaking his hand firmly. "The firm will recover. We are cleaning house."
"If you ever wish to resume negotiations regarding European expansion—on your terms, as CEO—my door is always open to you," Alejandro said, handing me a heavy gold business card. "Have a good rest in Madrid, Madam."
"Thank you," I smiled.
Alejandro and Serena turned and walked away down the jetbridge, flanked by their security detail.
The forward galley was completely silent. I turned back around to face my crew. Mark was standing there, his mouth slightly agape, while two junior flight attendants were staring at me as if I had just single-handedly landed a burning aircraft.
Mark slowly raised his glass of iced water. "Well... that was certainly a First Class experience."
I let out a long, shuddering laugh, the tension that had held my body rigid for the past eight hours finally melting away. I looked around the cabin of the 777—the metal tube at thirty thousand feet where I had reclaimed my life.
"Mark," I said, walking back into the galley and pulling my phone out of my pocket.
May you like
"Yeah, Clara?"
"Call the hotel," I said, unlocking the screen to find fifty unread messages from board members, investors, and news outlets. "Tell them to prepare the presidential suite. The CEO of Mercer & Partners is checking in early."
