Chapter 12 - The Ginza Gambit

Z
The rain had cleared by midnight, leaving the slick asphalt of Ginza glowing like a neon grid beneath the high-rise towers. I stepped out of my dark sedan outside a private, exclusive hostess club tucked away in a quiet alleyway—a place where Tokyo’s elite political and financial brokers made deals far away from public scrutiny.
Serena Hale was waiting for me in a private room on the top floor, sipping chilled sake while flanked by two heavy-set Spanish bodyguards.
"Clara," Serena said, rising to give me a warm hug. "When your assistant called and said you were in Tokyo, I didn't expect you to look so... ready for war."
"Julian is attacking from his cell," I said, sitting down opposite her and laying the forged document on the low wooden table. "He leaked this to Kenji Sato."
Serena picked up the paper, her eyes scanning the forged wire transfer with trained precision. A sharp, angry scoff escaped her lips. "This is Arthur Vance’s work. I’d recognize that Zurich routing format anywhere."
"How do you know that?" I asked, leaning in.
"Because six months ago, before my father completely severed ties with Arthur Vance’s law firm, Arthur tried to sell my father a 'risk-insurance' portfolio," Serena explained, her tone laced with disgust. "It contained fabricated shell accounts for several prominent corporate executives in Europe and America. It’s Arthur’s specialty—he creates fake paper trails of embezzlement, hides them in offshore registries, and uses them as blackmail whenever a corporate takeover stalls."
"So Julian didn't create this LLC three years ago," I realized, the pieces instantly falling into place. "Arthur fabricated it last week and backdated the Zurich registry records using his contacts in Swiss banking!"
"Precisely," Serena said. "Julian provided your social security number and forged signature from his old marital records, and Arthur executed the bank entry."
"Can you prove it?" I demanded.
Serena smiled—a dark, razor-sharp smile that proved she was truly Alejandro Hale's daughter. "My father didn't just fire Arthur Vance, Clara. He had our cyber-security team mirror Arthur’s firm’s private Swiss server before we closed our accounts with them. We have the digital timestamp of when that document was generated."
"When was it created?"
"Four days ago," Serena said triumphantly. "At 2:14 PM in Arthur Vance’s office in Midtown Manhattan."
A profound, dangerous relief surged through me. The trap was laid, but now I had the hammer to shatter it.
"Serena," I said, taking her hand. "I need that server log. And I need your father to make a personal call to Kenji Sato."
"My father is already on a plane from Madrid to Tokyo," Serena replied with a brilliant grin. "He lands at Haneda in five hours. And Clara? He hates Arthur Vance almost as much as you do."
At 9:00 AM the following morning, the executive boardroom of the Yamato Group was silent as a tomb.
Kenji Sato sat at the head of the massive cherrywood table, surrounded by his board of directors. Sitting opposite him was Arthur Vance, who had flown into Tokyo on a commercial flight late last night, wearing a triumphant, arrogant smile. Arthur had come to watch my execution and offer his own consulting firm as a replacement partner for the green-tech initiative.
"Mrs. Mercer," Kenji said, looking at me gravely as I sat calmly at the far end of the table. "The twenty-four hours have expired. The Nikkei Shimbun is holding its front-page story pending my final signal. Have you brought proof that this Swiss account is a forgery?"
Arthur Vance chuckled softly, adjusting his silk tie. "Sato-san, let's not waste time. Clara is a remarkable woman, but she was out of her depth the moment she stepped out of her flight attendant uniform. The paper trail is clear. She was complicit in Julian's off-shore funds."
I didn't argue. I didn't yell.
Instead, the double doors of the boardroom swung open, and Alejandro Hale walked inside, accompanied by two armed Japanese legal officials and the Chief Inspector of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Financial Crimes Unit.
Arthur Vance’s face froze. The color drained from his cheeks in a split second.
"Señor Hale?" Kenji Sato blinked, rising to his feet in surprise.
"Sato-san," Alejandro said, his commanding voice echoing off the walls. "I apologize for the intrusion, but I felt it necessary to personally deliver the results of a forensic cyber-investigation conducted by the Hale Group and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority."
Alejandro laid a thick bound document in front of Kenji.
"That document," Alejandro continued, pointing a finger directly at Arthur Vance, "contains the digital forensic proof that the Swiss account in question was fabricated ninety-six hours ago inside the Midtown Manhattan offices of Mr. Arthur Vance. Mr. Vance forged Mrs. Mercer's signature, bribed a mid-level Swiss bank clerk to insert a backdated entry, and conspired with a convicted felon, Julian Mercer, to commit international extortion against Mercer & Partners."
Kenji Sato’s eyes turned to cold steel as he read the certified Swiss server logs. He slowly looked up at Arthur Vance.
"Is this true, Mr. Vance?" Kenji whispered, his voice trembling with quiet, terrifying rage.
"It's... it's a mistake! A frame-up!" Arthur stammered, scrambling out of his chair, his hands flying up in panic. "Alejandro is lying! He's in league with Clara!"
The Chief Inspector of the Tokyo Police stepped forward, placing a hand on Arthur’s shoulder while producing an international arrest warrant.
"Arthur Vance," the inspector announced in Japanese and English. "You are under arrest for corporate forgery, extortion, and obstruction of justice under international treaty protocols. You will be detained at the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau pending immediate extradition to the United States."
"Clara! Tell them!" Arthur shrieked as the officers snapped handcuffs onto his wrists, forcing him to his knees. "Clara, please! Talk to Victoria! We were colleagues!"
I stood up slowly, smoothing down my tailored jacket, and looked down at Arthur with pure, absolute disdain.
"You were Julian’s parasite, Arthur," I said quietly. "And just like Julian, you forgot that when you attack my company, you don't just fight a businesswoman. You fight every single person who stands behind me."
As Arthur was dragged screaming out of the boardroom, Kenji Sato stood up and bowed deeply to me—a full, ninety-degree bow of profound respect.
"Mrs. Mercer," Kenji said, his voice thick with emotion. "I deeply apologize for doubting your honor. The Yamato Group would be deeply privileged to sign the forty-billion-yen green-tech contract with Mercer & Partners today."

I looked at Alejandro, who gave me a subtle, approving nod, and then back at Kenji.
"The privilege is ours, Sato-san," I replied with a gracious smile. "Let's build the future."
