Chapter 14 - The Swiss Showdown

The snow was falling heavily over Zurich, turning the ancient stone streets of the Bahnhofstrasse into a silent, white paradise. Inside the mahogany-paneled dining room of the ultra-exclusive Baur au Lac hotel, a roaring fireplace crackled softly, casting warm amber light over the silver table settings.

Hans Gruber, a distinguished gentleman in his sixties with gold-rimmed spectacles and a tailored charcoal suit, cut smoothly into his venison steak. Opposite him sat Gavin Vance.

Gavin was thirty-eight, with the sharp, cruel features of his older brother Marcus, but with an added air of wild, arrogant volatility. He was wearing a double-breasted Savile Row suit, swirling a glass of vintage Bordeaux, looking thoroughly pleased with himself.

"It's a done deal, Hans," Gavin said smoothly, his British accent dripping with smug confidence. "By 9:30 AM New York time, my buy order clears. I take fifty percent control of Mercer & Partners, fire Clara Mercer before lunch, and begin liquidating their tech patents by Friday. Your bank’s one percent stake will double in value within forty-eight hours."

Hans Gruber took a slow sip of wine, looking at Gavin over his spectacles. "Mrs. Mercer has built a very formidable organization, Mr. Vance. Stripping it seems... wasteful."

"Clara Mercer is a glorified airline stewardess who got lucky during a marital dispute," Gavin sneered dismissively. "She has no real financial pedigree. My brother Marcus made the mistake of underestimating her legal threats. I won't make that mistake. I don't negotiate with flight attendants, Hans. I crush them."

"Is that so, Gavin?"

A quiet, crystalline voice echoed from the entrance of the private dining room.

Gavin froze, his wine glass stopping inches from his lips.

I stepped out of the shadows, accompanied by two swiss legal officials and Victoria Vance. I was wearing an floor-length ivory cashmere coat over a black silk evening gown, my hair styled impeccably, my presence radiating pure, unadulterated power.

Hans Gruber immediately stood up, laying his cloth napkin on the table, and bowed respectfully. "Ah, Chairwoman Mercer. Right on time."

Gavin scrambled out of his chair, his face twisting in sudden, furious shock. "Clara? What the hell are you doing in Zurich? How did you get past security?"

"I own the security firm that handles this hotel, Gavin," Hans Gruber remarked dryly, gesturing for me to take a seat at the head of the table.

I sat down, crossing my legs elegantly, and looked up at Gavin Vance with cold, amused eyes.

"You should really watch your language in Swiss banking establishments, Gavin," I noted casually. "It lacks the refinement one expects from a Vance."

"Get out!" Gavin hissed, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "It doesn't matter what you do here, Clara! You're too late! My buy order in New York is already locked in! I control forty-nine percent! Hans's trust controls the final one percent, and he is selling it to me!"

"Actually, Gavin," Hans Gruber spoke up softly, taking a document out of his suit pocket, "I sold that one percent stake fifteen minutes ago."

Gavin’s jaw dropped. The color instantly drained from his face. "You... you what? To whom?!"

"To the Mercer & Partners Employee Equity Trust," Hans explained smoothly. "Under a private, off-market transaction executed under Swiss jurisdiction."

"You can't do that!" Gavin screamed, his eyes bulging with rage. "I offered you twenty percent above market value!"

"Mrs. Mercer offered me something far more valuable, Mr. Vance," Hans smiled faintly. "She provided evidence that the forty million dollars you used to fund your hedge fund's tender offer originated from illegal energy syndicates in Saint Petersburg, laundered through Banque de Genève—a institution currently under investigation by federal authorities."

Gavin backed away from the table, stumbling against his chair, his breathing coming in ragged, terrified gasps. "That's... that's a lie! It's clean capital!"

"The Swiss Financial Market Authority didn't think so when Victoria Vance handed them your wire logs an hour ago," I said, taking a fresh glass of sparkling water from the waiter. "Your offshore accounts in Geneva have been frozen, Gavin. Your buy order in New York has been canceled by the SEC due to suspected money laundering."

Gavin stared at me, his eyes wide with absolute, horrifying realization. He was completely ruined. Not only had he failed to take over Mercer & Partners, but his hedge fund was now bankrupt, his assets frozen, and federal indictments were already being drafted in New York and Geneva.

"You..." Gavin choked out, his voice trembling violently as he pointed a shaking finger at me. "You set a trap for me before I even made the tender offer!"

"I didn't set a trap, Gavin," I said, setting my glass down with a soft, final clink. "I simply remembered what you told your mistress three years ago on Flight 102 from London to JFK while I was hanging up your coat. You told her that you always hid your dirty money in Geneva because nobody in New York was smart enough to check the routing numbers."

I stood up, adjusting my cashmere coat, and stepped right up to Gavin Vance until I was standing inches from his pale, sweating face.

"You thought I was just a flight attendant serving you drinks at thirty thousand feet," I whispered, my voice slicing through his soul like a razor blade. "You forgot that from thirty thousand feet... I could see every single move you were making."

Gavin collapsed back into his chair, covering his face with his hands, weeping silently in total defeat.

I turned on my heel and walked out of the Baur au Lac dining room into the crisp, snow-kissed Zurich night, flanked by Victoria and Hans Gruber.

Victoria looked at me, a brilliant, triumphant laugh escaping her lips. "Clara, that was the most brutal corporate execution I have ever witnessed."

"It wasn't an execution, Victoria," I smiled, looking up at the glowing winter sky as my private limousine pulled up to the curb. "It was just business. Now... let's fly back to New York. We have a company to run."
