Chapter 6 - The Extradition Gambit

Z
Three days after the confrontation at the Real Casino de Madrid, the high-altitude haze of international legal warfare settled over Manhattan. I was back in New York, sitting at the massive mahogany desk on the 45th floor of Mercer & Partners' headquarters in Midtown.
The view of Central Park was breathtaking, but I didn't have time to admire it. Spread across the glass desk were legal documents, financial ledger printouts, and extradition petitions.
Opposite me sat Victoria Vance, looking sharp in a navy charcoal blazer, her tablet glowing with secure legal transmissions.
"Julian’s Spanish legal team is pushing hard for a bail hearing in Madrid," Victoria explained, swiping through the documents. "They're claiming he’s a low-risk corporate offender and offering his remaining equity as collateral."
"Denied," I said without looking up from my laptop. "If he gets bail in Spain, he’ll flee to a non-extradition country like Dubai before the sun sets. Marcus Vance has safe houses in Switzerland and the UAE. If Julian gets out, Marcus will make sure he vanishes—or worse, dies in an 'accident' to keep him from talking to the Department of Justice."
Victoria nodded in agreement. "I've already coordinated with the United States District Attorney for the Southern District of New York. The federal indictment for wire fraud, bank fraud, and corporate embezzlement was unsealed an hour ago. We are officially requesting his immediate extradition back to New York."
"Good," I said, leaning back in my executive chair. "How is the market reacting to our restructuring?"
Victoria smiled—a rare, genuine expression of satisfaction. "Mercer & Partners stock bounced back by fourteen percent yesterday morning following the joint press conference you held with Alejandro Hale. The fifty-million-euro capital injection from the Hale Group cleared an hour ago. The board is thrilled. Even Arthur Vance is sending you congratulatory fruit baskets."
"Tell Arthur to save the fruit," I remarked coolly. "I’m replacing him on the audit committee by Friday."
Before Victoria could answer, my desk phone chimed. It was my executive assistant, Sarah.
"Mrs. Mercer? You have an urgent personal call on line two. It’s from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Madrid. They say it’s Julian’s official one-minute legal call, but he’s insisting on speaking to you personally."
I looked at Victoria, who gave me a slight nod. "Put him through, Sarah."
I clicked line two and pressed the speakerphone button.
"Clara? Clara! Is that you?" Julian's voice sounded ragged, completely stripped of its former aristocratic poise. He sounded like a man drowning in quicksand.
"I'm here, Julian," I said calmly, taking a sip of iced water.
"Clara, you have to help me!" Julian wept, his voice shaking hysterically. "The federal prosecutors in New York just handed me an indictment! They're talking about twenty years in federal prison! Twenty years, Clara! I won't survive a week in a federal penitentiary!"
"You should have thought about that before you transferred thirty million dollars of company funds into Cayman shell accounts, Julian," I said coldly.
"It wasn't just me!" Julian blurted out, his panicked voice crackling over the international line. "I was forced into it, Clara! You don't understand! Marcus Vance had dirt on me! He threatened to ruin us years ago if I didn't help him launder Apex capital through our tech acquisitions!"
Victoria immediately leaned in, hitting the record button on her tablet.
"Go on, Julian," I said, keeping my voice smooth and non-threatening. "What kind of dirt?"
"The... the Tokyo deal in 2021!" Julian confessed, blobering hysterically. "I made a massive insider trading mistake! Marcus caught me! He agreed not to turn me over to the SEC if I gave Apex back-door access to Mercer & Partners' financial routing systems! Every transaction I made was monitored by Apex! The Cartier necklace, the tickets to Madrid—Marcus approved all of it because he wanted me to get caught so he could force a hostile takeover!"
I stared at Victoria. Her eyes were wide with shock. Julian wasn't just a greedy, cheating husband; he was a blackmailed pawn who had handed the keys to our entire corporate empire over to a vulture capital firm to cover up his own incompetence.
"Julian," I said carefully. "Do you have proof of Marcus Vance's extortion? Emails? Encrypted logs?"
"Yes! Yes!" Julian screamed into the phone. "I kept a backup flash drive! It’s in a safety deposit box at the Chase branch on 57th Street! The key is hidden inside the lining of my leather watch box in our townhouse master bedroom! I’ll give you everything, Clara! The key, the account codes, the testimony! Just please... please talk to the U.S. Attorney! Get them to drop the federal wire fraud charges! Put me in minimum security! Don't let Marcus kill me!"
I sat back, processing the sheer magnitude of what Julian had just given me. The flash drive didn't just protect Mercer & Partners; it was the smoking gun that could bring down Marcus Vance and Apex Global Capital forever.
"Julian," I said softly. "Where is the key right now?"
"In the watch box! In the closet behind my velvet suit jackets!" he pleaded. "Clara, please tell me you'll help me!"
"I will give the flash drive to the federal prosecutors, Julian," I promised. "And I will ask the U.S. Attorney to consider your cooperation when sentencing."
"And the divorce?" he choked out. "Clara, can we... can we try to fix this after I serve my time? We built this company together—"
I almost felt a wave of pity for how pathetically delusional he was.
"Julian," I interrupted him, my voice soft yet sharp as a diamond edge. "The company will thrive without you. And so will I. Goodbye."
I ended the call before he could respond.
Victoria stood up instantly, grabbing her coat. "I’m calling federal agents right now. We need a warrant to retrieve that flash drive from your townhouse before Marcus Vance realizes Julian sang."
"No," I said, standing up and grabbing my designer coat from the rack. "Marcus Vance already knows."
Victoria paused, frowning. "What do you mean?"
"Marcus is paranoid," I explained, pulling my gloves on. "If he blackmailed Julian for three years, he certainly has eyes on Julian’s house. If we send police cars and federal agents to the townhouse, Marcus’s lawyers will file an emergency motion claiming evidence tampering, or his private security detail will try to destroy it before we get there."

"So what are you going to do?" Victoria asked.
"I’m going to my home," I replied, a cold, fierce smile playing on my lips. "I’m going to fetch my husband’s watch box. And if Marcus Vance’s men try to stop me, they’ll quickly realize that an international flight attendant knows exactly how to handle unwanted passengers."
