Chapter 9 - The Bloodline Secrets

Z
The aftermath of the Bel-Air estate raid sent shockwaves through the global intelligence and corporate communities. Damian Thorne was transported under maximum federal security to a high-containment medical facility inside a federal prison, facing life without parole for treason, corporate espionage, and attempted murder. Serena Hayes, facing fifty years for her role in my father’s poisoning, turned state’s evidence, laying out the entire global conspiracy in exchange for avoiding the death penalty.
Two weeks later, the storm had finally settled.
Vanguard stock had stabilized at an all-time high, making the company stronger and more valuable than it had ever been in its history. The Sterling Syndicate was completely liquidated, its assets seized by the federal government and auctioned off to cover their debts.
I sat in my father’s restored study at the Bel-Air compound, watching the sunset cast golden light across the Pacific Ocean. Alexander and Eleanor were sleeping peacefully in their nursery down the hall, guarded by a security team that had now become like family.
For the first time in months, I felt a deep, profound sense of peace. The killers were in prison. My father’s name was cleared. My children were safe.
A soft knock at the door broke my solitude.
Marcus stepped into the room, carrying a heavy, dust-covered leather satchel. His face was uncharacteristically serious, devoid of the triumphant mood that had swept through the rest of the staff.
“Ma’am,” Marcus said quietly, closing the door behind him. “The forensic team finished clearing out the subterranean server vault today. Behind the master mainframe wall… they found a hidden safe. It wasn't linked to the company servers. It was a mechanical safe that belonged exclusively to your father.”
I sat up straight, my pulse quickening. “Did you open it?”
“Only with the physical key we recovered from his safe-deposit box,” Marcus replied, placing the heavy leather satchel onto the desk in front of me. “Inside, there were no corporate documents. No financial stocks. Just these.”
He reached into the satchel and pulled out a thick, yellowed ledger tied with black ribbon, alongside an old, silver framed photograph.
I picked up the photograph. My breath caught in my throat.
The photo showed my father, Richard Vanguard, thirty years ago, standing next to a stunningly beautiful woman with dark, piercing eyes and a brilliant, radiant smile. She was holding a newborn baby in her arms.
It wasn’t my mother.
My mother had passed away when I was two years old—or at least, that was the story my father had told me my entire life. But the woman in this photograph looked nothing like the portraits of my mother that hung in the gallery down the hall.
With trembling fingers, I untied the black ribbon around the yellowed ledger and opened the first page. My father’s unmistakable, elegant handwriting filled the paper:
“If you are reading this, Victoria, it means I am gone, and the secret I spent your entire life protecting has finally surfaced. Forgive me for the lies, my sweet girl. But to keep you alive, I had to let the world believe you were my daughter...”
My eyes widened in sheer, suffocating shock. I re-read the sentence three times, my mind racing, refusing to compute the words on the page.
Not his daughter?
I turned the page, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I read further:
“Thirty-two years ago, during the height of the Cold War tech race, I worked alongside a brilliant young geneticist named Evelyn Sterling—Julian Sterling’s younger sister. Evelyn discovered a revolutionary breakthrough in biometric neural-coding that could rewrite human military technology forever. When Julian discovered what she had created, he tried to steal it, leading to a violent purge within the Sterling family. Evelyn fled to me for protection. We fell in love. But Julian found us...”
“Evelyn died giving birth to you, Victoria. Knowing that Julian would kill you to eliminate the true bloodline heir to the Sterling patents, I forged your birth certificate, erased Evelyn’s existence from the public records, and raised you as my own daughter, Victoria Vanguard. You are not a Vanguard by blood, my darling. You are the last surviving bloodline heir of the Sterling empire.”
The world seemed to spin beneath my feet. The air vanished from my lungs. Everything I thought I knew about my life, my family, my identity, and my hatred for the Sterling family crashed down around me in a single, catastrophic moment.
I wasn't Richard Vanguard’s biological daughter. I was a Sterling. I was the niece of Julian Sterling—the man whose empire I had just mercilessly destroyed, the man whose blood ran through my own veins.
Suddenly, my private phone on the desk rang.
The sound was sharp, terrifying, echoing through the silent room like a gunshot.
I stared at the screen. It was an incoming call from a federal detention facility.
I slowly picked up the phone, bringing it to my ear, my hand shaking uncontrollably. “Hello?”
A raspy, coughing laugh echoed through the speaker. It was Julian Sterling, speaking from his prison cell.
“Hello, Victoria... or should I say, my dearest niece?” Julian wheezed, his voice laced with a dark, triumphant satisfaction that sent pure terror through my soul. “Did you really think you won, little girl? Did you really think you destroyed my family?”
“What do you want, Julian?” I choked out, tears of rage and confusion stinging my eyes.
“I want you to check your daughter’s neck, Victoria,” Julian whispered, his tone dropping into a chilling, venomous purr. “Check Eleanor’s birthmark... the tiny red mark behind her left ear. The identical birthmark passed down through six generations of pure Sterling blood.”
May you like
My heart stopped beating.
“You think you destroyed my legacy, Victoria,” Julian cackled hysterically into the receiver as federal guards could be heard shouting in the background, trying to pull him away from the phone. “You didn't destroy the Sterling empire... you just handed it to your children! AND THEY WILL FINISH WHAT I STARTED!”
