Chapter 5 - The Vanishing Act

The words hung in the sterile, antiseptic air of the delivery room like an icy shroud. The faint, rhythmic sound of the heart monitors monitoring my newborn twins suddenly sounded like the ticking of a time bomb.

“What do you mean, he’s gone?” I demanded, my voice barely above a whisper, but laced with a lethal steel that made Marcus straighten his posture.

“Twenty minutes ago, the sheriff’s department transport vehicle was rammed off the freeway near the pass,” Marcus explained, his hand resting instinctively near his sidearm. “A heavily armed tactical team deployed smoke and flashbangs. They didn’t fire a single shot at the officers, Victoria. It was a precision extraction. They cut Damian out of his restraints and vanished into the night with two unmarked SUVs. Serena was left behind in the van—she’s currently hysterical in police custody, crying that Damian betrayed her too.”

I stared at the white ceiling, processing the terrifying reality. Damian wasn’t just a greedy, arrogant gold-digger who had tried to steal my inheritance. He was an asset. A weapon planted inside my father’s company by the Sterling Syndicate.

The Sterlings had been trying to hostile-takeover Vanguard Enterprises for over two decades. My father had spent his entire life building a impenetrable vault of proprietary AI and defense technology patents that made Vanguard worth billions. When they couldn't beat him in the market, they sent in Damian Thorne to destroy us from the inside out.

“Is the hospital secure?” I asked, looking down at Alexander and Eleanor, who were sleeping peacefully in my arms.

“I’ve doubled the detail,” Marcus assured me, his eyes resolute. “I brought in twelve former Recon Marines on private contract. No one gets on this floor without biometric clearance and my personal approval. The DA has also placed a round-the-clock armed police guard outside.”

“Good,” I said, handing Eleanor to the waiting nurse while keeping Alexander tight against my chest. “Because Damian knows he failed his handlers. The broadcast ruined their quiet takeover. The Sterlings won’t just let eighty million dollars and controlling interest in Vanguard slip through their fingers. They are going to come for me, and they are going to come for these children.”

Three days later, against medical advice, I discharged myself from Cedars-Sinai. Staying in a vulnerable hospital building with giant glass windows was suicide. I needed to move to a fortress.

We retreated to the Vanguard Estate in Bel-Air—not the Montecito mansion where the nightmare had occurred, but my father’s original, heavily fortified compound hidden deep within the gated hills. The estate was built like a modern bunker: reinforced steel walls, bulletproof smart-glass, and a private subterranean server room containing the heart of Vanguard’s global operations.

As my private armored convoy pulled through the massive iron gates of the Bel-Air property, my phone chimed with a private, restricted video call.

I sat in the plush leather back seat of the bulletproof SUV, looking down at the screen. I accepted the call.

The screen flickered, revealing the aristocratic, weathered face of Julian Sterling—the eighty-year-old patriarch of the Sterling empire. He sat in a dimly lit, wood-paneled library, sipping scotch from a crystal glass, his icy blue eyes fixed on me with disturbing amusement.

“Victoria,” Julian spoke, his voice smooth, gravelly, and entirely devoid of warmth. “Congratulations on the birth of your twins. A boy and a girl, if I’m not mistaken? Such a tragic time to bring new life into the world.”

“Julian,” I replied coldly, showing not a single shred of fear. “I see you managed to rescue your little lapdog from the police. I hope he was worth the eighty million dollars he lost you.”

Julian chuckled softly, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “Damian was merely a tool, my dear. A disposable, albeit charismatic, mean to an end. He got sloppy. He let his pathetic lust for your stepmother cloud his objective. But do not mistake his incompetence for my weakness.”

“You murdered my father,” I hissed, my knuckles turning white against the phone.

“Your father was a stubborn fool who refused to realize that the world belongs to those willing to break the rules,” Julian said dismissively. “He held patents that belong in my hands. And now, you hold them. But you are a single mother with two defenseless babies, recovering from a traumatic childbirth, surrounded by corporate vultures who are already tanking Vanguard’s stock price following the scandal.”

“If you think I’m going to surrender, you don’t know me at all,” I fired back.

“Oh, I don’t expect you to surrender, Victoria,” Julian smiled, a chilling, shark-like grin. “I expect you to break. The stock market opens tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. By noon, my firm will execute a hostile short-squeeze on Vanguard stock, backed by the eighty million Damian funneled into our accounts. You will be bankrupt before sunset. And when you are broken, penniless, and facing corporate ruin… I will personally buy your father’s empire for pennies on the dollar.”

“Try it,” I said softly, staring directly into his camera. “And I’ll burn your legacy to the ground before I let you touch a single share.”

I ended the call before he could reply, my chest heaving with cold rage. I turned to Marcus, who was sitting in the front passenger seat.

“Call the board of directors,” I commanded. “Tell them to clear their schedules. We are having an emergency emergency shareholder meeting tonight at midnight.”

“Ma’am, the market is closed tonight,” Marcus pointed out. “What are you planning?”

I looked out the tinted window as the heavy steel gates of the estate closed behind us, locking us safely inside.

“Julian Sterling thinks he’s playing chess with a grieving heiress,” I murmured, my eyes gleaming with cold ambition. “He doesn't know I've been playing the long game since the day my father died.”
