Chapter 15 - The Reign of Iron

BZZZZZZT!

A blinding, high-frequency Electromagnetic Pulse erupted from my gold bracelet, expanding outward in a micro-second sphere of sheer destruction.

Every light in the subterranean lounge instantly exploded in a shower of sparks. The emergency backup generators shrieked and died. The laser sights trained on my chest vanished as the optics inside the mercenaries' weapons melted. Over-head, the digital security cameras and electronic door locks short-circuited with loud, popping cracks.

In the sudden, pitch-black darkness, Marcus moved with terrifying, predatory speed.

THWACK! SNAP! CRACK!

The muffled thuds of hand-to-hand combat and the sickening sound of breaking bones echoed through the dark room. Marcus and my two operatives, equipped with thermal night-vision contact lenses, dismantled Madam Chen's armed guards before they could even rack their weapon slides.

Three seconds later, Marcus clicked on a tactical flashlight, illuminating the room.

All six of Madam Chen's elite mercenaries were unconscious or groaning on the floor, their weapons stripped and broken.

Madam Chen sat frozen on her velvet sofa, her vintage cigarette dropping from her trembling fingers onto the rug. The cold, unshakeable aura of the syndicate queen evaporated instantly, replaced by wide-eyed, breathless terror as Marcus stepped behind her, resting the cold muzzle of a suppressed pistol against the back of her neck.

"Don't move," Marcus growled.

I stepped forward through the gloom, calmly picking up the silver cryogenic case from the glass table. I checked the temperature gauge; the EMP had been shielded against the internal thermal casing. The samples were intact.

"You... you crazy bitch..." Madam Chen gasped, her hands clutching the velvet cushions. "You can't get off this ship! My men on the upper decks... there are fifty armed guards on this vessel!"

"They are currently preoccupied," I replied smoothly, checking my smartwatch, which had rebooted on a hardened military frequency.

Right on cue, a massive, thunderous BOOM shook the entire floating casino, making the floor tilt violently under our feet. Glasses shattered on the bar, and screams of panicking gamblers began echoing down from the upper gaming halls.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, cut through the dark ocean waters, the massive gray silhouette of the Aegis—my private defense fleet's flagship—emerged from the fog. Its high-powered searchlights cut through the rain, blinding the casino's upper deck while long-range acoustic water-cannons shredded the floating casino's steering rudders.

"Your ship is taking on water, Madam Chen," I said, looking down at her with total contempt. "Within twenty minutes, the Grand Lotus will be resting on the seabed. I suggest you tell your men to abandon ship."

"You... you destroyed a three-hundred-million-dollar casino just to get this case?!" she shrieked, tears of frustration ruining her immaculate makeup.

"I told you," I whispered, leaning down until my face was inches from hers, my voice cutting through her soul like a frozen blade. "They stole my children's blood. I would have dropped a missile on this boat if it were necessary."

I turned away, motioning for Marcus to secure the case. "Leave her. Let her swim to Macau."

Ten minutes later, a private stealth helicopter deployed from the deck of the Aegis hovered over the tilting helipad of the sinking casino. Marcus and I pulled ourselves into the cabin, the silver cryogenic case secured safely between us.

As the helicopter banked hard over the water, heading toward international airspace, I looked out the window. Down below, the glittering lights of the Grand Lotus flickered one last time before slipping beneath the dark, stormy waves of the South China Sea, surrounded by rescue boats and panicking syndicate members.

The Chen Syndicate was shattered. The Sterling bloodline secrets were secured. The rare-earth supply lines were restored.

I leaned back in the leather helicopter seat, closing my eyes as the rhythmic beat of the rotor blades lulled me into a deep, long-overdue sense of relief.

Two days later.

I stood on the sun-drenched balcony of the Bel-Air compound in Los Angeles. The morning air was clean and crisp. In the courtyard below, Marcus was supervising a new shift of security guards, while inside the nursery, Alexander and Eleanor were laughing as Dr. Reyes fed them.

My phone chimed on the patio table. It was an official notification from the US District Court.

Damian Thorne and Serena Hayes had both signed final, unconditional guilty pleas, waiving all rights to appeal, agreeing to serve consecutive life sentences in federal isolation. The last remnants of the conspiracy that had taken my father's life had been swept into the trash heap of history.

I picked up a glass of fresh orange juice, looking out over the endless, sprawling skyline of Los Angeles.

The heiress who had walked into that master bedroom months ago—frightened, pregnant, betrayed by the people she trusted—was gone forever. In her place stood a woman who had faced the darkest corners of corporate warfare, crime syndicates, and bloodline secrets, and emerged as the undisputed ruler of an empire.

I smiled, taking a slow sip of my juice, feeling the warm California sun against my face.

My children's future was safe. My father's legacy was secure. And if anyone ever dared to threaten my family again... they knew exactly what was coming for them.
