Chapter 6 - The Midnight Boardroom

Z

The grand boardroom on the top floor of Vanguard Tower usually overlooked the glittering skyline of Los Angeles, but tonight, the floor-to-ceiling windows were covered by heavy blackout blinds. The room was tense, suffocatingly quiet, filled with twelve of the most powerful corporate board members in the country.

They sat around the fifty-foot mahogany table, whispering nervously among themselves. Vanguard’s stock had plummeted thirty percent in after-hours trading following the news of Damian’s arrest and subsequent prison break. The media was predicting the imminent collapse of the company.

At precisely midnight, the double doors of the boardroom swung open.

I walked in.

I wasn't wearing the soft, elegant silk gowns of a helpless heiress. I wore a tailored, pitch-black power suit, my dark hair pulled back into a sleek, razor-sharp bun. Though my body was still recovering from giving birth just four days ago, my posture was rigid, unbreakable, radiating absolute authority. Marcus walked two paces behind me, flanked by two armed security guards carrying silver, locked briefcase-sized hard drives.

The room fell dead silent as I took my seat at the head of the table—my father’s old chair.

“Victoria,” spoke Arthur Pendelton, the senior-most board member, a man who had been my father’s friend for thirty years. “We are all relieved you and the children are safe after the… horrifying events at the estate. But we must be pragmatic. The company is bleeding. Damian’s embezzlement has crippled our liquid reserves, and rumors of a Sterling Syndicate hostile takeover tomorrow morning are panicking our investors. We need to consider liquidating our defense patents to raise capital.”

A few other board members murmured in agreement, nodding their heads nervously.

I rested my elbows on the table, folding my hands together, staring down Arthur with a cold, piercing gaze.

“Liquidate?” I said softly, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. “You want to sell my father’s life’s work to the very people who murdered him?”

Arthur gasped, looking around the table. “Murdered? Victoria, the police report said—”

“The police report is incomplete,” I interrupted, motioning to Marcus.

Marcus stepped forward, placing a silver hard drive onto the center of the table and pressing a button. The giant projection screen on the wall illuminated, displaying a complex network of bank transfers, encrypted shell companies, and recorded audio files.

“What you are looking at,” I announced, “is the paper trail left behind by Damian Thorne. But he wasn't acting alone. Every dollar stolen from our pension funds was routed directly into Sterling Global Holdings. Julian Sterling orchestrated the murder of my father by tampering with his medical prescriptions, using my stepmother Serena as his proxy.”

Gasps rang out across the boardroom. Several directors leaned forward, their faces pale as they scanned the ironclad evidence projected before them.

“This is monstrous…” one female director whispered, clutching her pearl necklace. “If this gets out, Sterling Global will face federal indictments!”

“They will,” I agreed. “But Julian Sterling thinks he can bankrupt us tomorrow morning before the Department of Justice finishes their investigation. He plans to short-squeeze Vanguard stock at 9:00 AM, crash our market cap, and buy controlling shares by noon.”

“Then we’re doomed,” Arthur said, slumped in his leather chair. “We don't have the cash reserves to buy back our own stock and stabilize the price. Without seventy million dollars in cash by morning, the Sterlings will buy the floating shares.”

A slow, vicious smile spread across my lips.

I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out a second black flash drive, and tossed it onto the mahogany table. It slid smoothly across the wood, stopping right in front of Arthur.

“What is this?” Arthur asked, picking it up.

“That,” I said, leaning back in my chair, “is the private encryption key to my father’s secret vault in Zurich. Three years ago, knowing that Serena and Damian were acting suspiciously, my father and I secretly transferred forty percent of our private equity into a decentralized, un-traceable AI-driven hedge fund.”

The entire board stared at me in absolute shock.

“How much is in that account?” Arthur stammered, his hands trembling as he held the drive.

“Two hundred and fifty million dollars,” I stated smoothly.

The room erupted into stunned silence. Two hundred and fifty million dollars—more than triple what Damian had stolen.

“Tomorrow morning at 8:59 AM,” I commanded, standing up and placing both palms flat on the table, leaning over the board members, “we will not be defending our stock. We will be baiting Julian Sterling. We will let him drop tens of millions of dollars into shorting Vanguard stock. We will let him think he’s winning. And then, at 9:15 AM, I will execute a massive, two-hundred-million-dollar buy-back.”

Understanding dawned on Arthur’s face, replaced by a sudden, terrifying look of awe. “You’re going to trap him in a short-squeeze… you’re going to bankrupt Sterling Global in a single trading session.”

“Julian Sterling killed my father and tried to steal my children’s future,” I said, my voice dropping to a icy, terrifying whisper. “Tomorrow, I don’t just intend to defeat him. I intend to erase the Sterling name from Wall Street forever.”
